Curious about how to match siblings names

MarchNowFebMum · 24/03/2009 09:08

There's often posts on here about how to pick names that 'match' the older siblings.

I may be dim but I don't get it - what are the rules of matching? Obviously Connie and Bonnie sounds hideous together but I don't get what logic people use to respond to these questions.

This is a serious question - worried I'll make a mistep with dc2!

We chose our first dd's name from Greek mythology and our second dd also has a Greek name. Their middle names are sort of linked as well. We just didn't want to give one an unusual (or weird, as one midwife put it) name and not the other one. The first is named Ariadne Hope and the other is Haidee Serenity.

I knew a couple who had children called Anastasia and Kevin. They were French/American so the Kevin sounded nicer than it does with an English accent but they still didn't really work together!

susiey · 27/03/2009 18:33

I guess I always try and match length of name I have and Annalise and Ezekiel so couldn't name the next child Mark

Funny someone mentioned the royal fixation thing; DD was going be Sophie Elizabeth, but as my MIL is a staunch Royalist and I'm v. definitely in favour of getting shot of the lot of 'em, didn't want any confusion!
She ended up Sophie Olivia, which thrilled her great nan who was called Olive.

She was an amazing woman who passed away last year when DD was 3.6 and I'm so pleased we made that choice, especially as DD is showing signs of having her great nana's feisty streak!

I have a Tom and wanted to call number 2 Harry but couldn't face a lifetime of "where's dick?" jokes... so he got stuck with Jack instead.

On a related topic, also realised that my first choice, Oliver, wasn't a great idea with our surname Groves. Or Labroke...

Not RL, but when I was younger and watched 'Neighbours' I always thought it was quite clever that the twins, who had been named Elizabeth and William, were known as LiBBy and BiLLy.

When I was expecting DC1 I had Catriona and Murray at the top of my names lists, but when I had the baby and it she was a tiny girl who just didn't seem to suit Catriona she (eventually) became Ruby. I realised then that if I ever had a DS I wouldn't be able to call him my boy's name choice otherwise it would be Ruby & Murray!! Too close to the cockney rhyming slang.

I went to school with 3 sisters called Rosy, Daisy and Lily. We always joked a third would be called Deadly Nightshade.

I know 3 girls now called Amelia Rose.

We have 3 dc. First 2 are boys, both with strong, long, traditional but not often used first names. We spent 8 months struggling with potential third boys names. Luckily dc3 was a girl. Phew.

Another school friend who was one of 5 had parents who alternated choosing the children's names and they had very different styles. Can't remember them all but there was a Dmitri, a Saskia, and a Kate, I think.

wildflowergr · 27/03/2009 11:35

well I had a problem with my boys the first one I named him after a greek god Apollo here in greece the call him Apollona and my second son well I gave him an acient greek hero name Iason and they call him here Iasona so I guess the match very well

Hope Faith and Kevin is LOL

Gossipmonger, why is DD1 miffed about having an Indian name, does she feel she should have had an English one?

Does it really matter if siblings names match. And what exactly does "match" mean anyway when it comes to names. Rhyming? If so, we've done quite well, we have an Annabel and a Daniel who are usually abbreviated to Annie and Danny. When thier cousin Frances visits it's a veritable rhyme-fest - Annie, Danny and Frannie! Purely accidental of course when the names were chosen but we think it's quite funny.
Don't get hung up about it, there are much, much more important things to worry about than children's names.

chipmonkey · 26/03/2009 23:57

Here in Ireland I notice that if a family have a Conor and then have a little girl, they usually call her Ciara.

surrofab · 26/03/2009 21:23

My children's names all have the same amount of syllables in them, which just makes them flow beautifully. The names also just 'go' together.

mifi · 26/03/2009 21:05

Gossipmonger-think they all sound good but to be honest I dont really get this going together larky. Had a pregnant friend round today who has chose Jasmine for new baby as she thought it went well with Isabella, even though she likes Molly but doesnt think this does! I was baffled. I admitted I'd not even thought about it when i chose name for my daughters! Just picked what i liked, and one is not that common and one is but still think they sound ok together, Melissa and Chloe.

ARAG · 26/03/2009 21:01

I know siblings who are

Vladimir, Kasmir, Bartok and... Molly(!)

The name Molly doesn't match, but now that they're all grown up, everyone's name fits.

ReginaFalangi · 26/03/2009 20:47

Two sibsets I have heard of:

Hope, Faith and Kevin

Eartha, Amethyst, and their new baby brother is called Steve.

GossipMonger · 26/03/2009 19:10

Max and Zachary

Max and Joshua

Max and Theo

Max and Jamie

Max and Ethan

Max and Finn

Max and Jonah

Friends of mine have girls called Mila and Hayley. Dad is Indian and Mum is not and they went for an indian name for the first and English for the second. DD1 was very miffed about it. And they both have the same middle name of Jane!!

Xmasishere · 26/03/2009 18:47

Saffron, Sienna n Scarlet...all shades of red...

number3onway · 26/03/2009 18:18

I've got Morgan and Aurelia already, having discussions about name for number 3, we can't agree on anything
my great grandfather was John Thomas......

Arcadie · 26/03/2009 17:49

We went for nearly anagrams of each other with I m o g e n and G i d e o n. Agree with the post on not doing one weird and one normal. My friends Colletta and Luke (bro and sis) get some funny looks,

Littlepurpleprincess · 26/03/2009 17:47

Emerald Green?!

MerryMarigold · 26/03/2009 17:35

Max and Jack (1 syllable, I like the 'a' in the middle).

Max and Pax may be a bit much tho'!

waltonsmountain · 26/03/2009 17:35

My granny went to school with 3 sisters called Ivy, Olive and Emerald Green.

:0

beavermummy · 26/03/2009 16:43

Anya Renee and Willow Rose - both middle names are from grandparents on both sides. He chose Anya so I got to choose Willow. Everyone happy! Job's a good 'un x

nightingale452 · 26/03/2009 16:37

LuLuBai - Michael and Rafael's brother would have to be Gabriel - they are both names of angels I believe!

We went for names that would never have to be spelt for our 2 DDs - we have an unusual surname which you always have to spell out and we didn't want our children to have to spell out their entire names all the time!
