Boys names, feel we are being too boring...

Just wondered if anyone would like to think up some inspiring suggestions to add to our (in my opinion slightly uninspired) list of boys names.

At the moment we like:

Me: Edward, Peter, Joseph, Jesse, John - not actually totally sure about the last 2

Husband: Stephen, Andrew

We both think each other's choices are OK but not blown away by any of them.

Additionally we have had to discount the following names (all of which I really love) on the grounds that they are the same or too similar to other family members, or don't go with our surname etc: Alexander, Robert, Benedict, Michael, Matthias, Christopher.

My ds is Patrick - and, if it matters to you - in all his 8 years we have never met another one!

I think that gender ambiguous names are generally a bad idea, because they can be a pain in the neck (I have a niece called Sam - she's quite a senior academic and she gets SOOOO fed up of people doing a double take when she turns out to be a woman!) - but (unfair, I know) I do think that being a boy with a name perceived as female could be difficult. There have even been songs about it.....!

Not keen on Jesse at all - only one I like is Jospeth but not enough to name my child it.

My dgs is Finn and when we told dgs1 who was 9 at the time he said,'Its unusual but its not a teasing name.'I think it is very important that our boys dont have 'teasing names'.When I called ds1 Guy I never anticipated that boys of 11+ would change the u to an a but they did.None of your suggestions are boring though Jesse may be a bit awkward in UK.

Richard, Stuart, Sydney/Sidney, Oscar, Alistair, Nicholas, Joshua, Oliver, Angus, Marcus, Leo, William/Wilbur.

Of your lists I like Edward and Andrew, but not the rest. Defo not Jesse though!

I agree about the "big Jessie" thing, that is mainly what is making me unsure. I really like the look of it written down, so maybe it can be under consideration for a middle name.

I do like some of the ones that people have suggested, especially Gregory and Patrick but nothing is really leaping out at me - plus Patrick doesn't go with our surname - perhaps we should change our surname by deed poll and then get way more choice.

I don't really like Bradley and Justin or similar names.

Joseph is a lovely name, traditional but nice and suits little boys/teenagers and men so will grow with him.

It's not just that it could sound like a girl's name though. It's that - especially oop north - a man who is perhaps not behaving in as manly a fashion as the onlooker thinks he should, might be referred to as a "big jessie."

Jacob is nice / classic yet not too common...

Why is it a bad idea to give your son a name that could be a girls? This cuts out a lot: Sam, Alex, Jo, Sasha etc. My son has a (fairly unusual) name that sounds like a girls and I love girly boys names.

I plan to call the next boy Stacy...

I hate Jesse but like the rest. I love boring names-they are classic and timeless and won't date.

I see from your choices you like fairly traditional, timeless names.
I have 2 boys and I know it's hard. There were v. few and DH and I agreed on. DS1 has a more unusual (but not "Out there" name).

Anything but Jesse! It's such a bad idea to give a boy a name that sounds as if it's a girl's name. It shouldn't be a problem - but sadly it is.

Oooh, I like Gregory. Unfortunately our surname begins with a C so names ending in a "k" sound are out, makes it sound as if you have something stuck in your throat
