Names *can* be stolen. Oh yes they can

If a person rules out the names of nieces/nephews, friends' children, neighbours' children, and pores through names books, checking popularity of names on line, their meanings, how quickly the name is rising and so on, before deciding on a well-researched name; then they are entitled to be disgruntled if somebody in their circle of acquaintance settles on the same name.

eg, you call your baby Dulcie Meryl. The family 5 doors down the road who you don't really know' call their child Dulcie or Meryl. Or you cousin calls her dd Meryl Dulcie, but she 'hardly ever sees you'.

I think this is completely weird and I cant believe people think it's OK. It's not ok.

You are perfectly entitled to be baffled by their shameless lack of imagination.

Oops, meant "potential dd3" as we actually HAVE a dd2 .

She is not called Dulcie. Or Meryl.

Gavel - it's the hammer-y thing that judges bang when they've made their... er... judgment. So "gavel" kind of means "I have proclaimed my official verdict". (Can you tell I didn't do any looking up in a dictionary?)

Best to take it as a compliment but it's probably annoying .

I think it's funny when my dd meets other girls her own age with the same name.

A definite name thief! That is annoying and all it succeeds in doing is showing that the parent is not very original and is shameless in pinching someone elses name to boot

What is gavel? Have checked the acronym list and still mystified (prob being dim)

I can't imagine why anyone would want to steal either.

You don't own names though. I am intending to give my baby a middle name which is the first name of a friend's baby. I haven't stolen it because I had thought about it before.

The name is Dulcie. Not Meryl. A friend has a 5 month old called Dulcie. A woman she knows through their elder children has just named her newborn Dulcie. Her older children have more conservative names.

Whose to say that they didn't think of the name at the same time as you or they're not naming their daughter after their great-auntie Dulciea and her sister Meryl?

In my ante-natal class no fewer than 3 of us had in mind the name of I eventually gave my daugher. Whose stealing what name then?

I wouldn't be bothered about the neighbor, but would probably be upset if my cousin did that. However, people need to remember, if they don't share their names, there's no way for others to know that they might be "stealing"!
