Your thoughts as a possible boy's name, please. Pronounced to rhyme with Ryan. Also considering Kiron. (Like, but can't have Kieron as name of an ex.)

Well, Kyan is my son's name and lots of people have complimented us on how much they like it.

I kind of know what people mean about it sounding chavvy tbh as unusual boy's names often do. It definitely isn't a made up name though and is more common in some Asian countries and Africa. If DS had my (english) surname I probably wouldn't have considered it. However, he has his Dad's Iranian surname and so people assume that that Kyan is an Iranian name too (according to his Grandfather it is anyway).

Somebody once suggested that before you chose a name for a baby you ask yourself if you can imagine a prime minister, doctor or lawyer with that name (very snobby, I know!). Kyan with my surname, I would have said no but with his dad's surname I would say yes, after all Barack Obama is an unusual name.

I rally like Kier which was mentioned above

Jenbot · 22/03/2009 10:42

I know a Kyan, pronounced key-ann.
I had assumed it was a Korean name, as he is 1/2 Korean.

bobbysmum07 · 21/03/2009 23:05

I personally don't think the name sounds remotely unusal or made up. It's a perfectly nice name that I've come across a few times in my nursery - three boys, two of which were of African descent, but in one case the spelling was slightly different.

SlartyBartFast · 21/03/2009 22:49

kyan to rhyme with ryan?

bit too unusual imo,
i like kian.. but do now know one, previously i wasnt so keen.

screamingabdab · 21/03/2009 22:40

nancy66 I was joking! I also shot the name down in flames!

CoteDAzur · 21/03/2009 19:26

Who knows, maybe the Turkish diaspora in UK have started inventing their own names, in adaptation to their host culture

CoteDAzur · 21/03/2009 19:25

Kayhan is a Turkish name.

Kaylan could be a Turkish name (from the way it sounds & is written), but it isn't.

Because there is only one way to write Turkish words (phonetically) and all Turkish names mean something, it is quite impossible to bastardise them.

MrsMattie · 21/03/2009 10:38

There is a boy at my DS's nursery called Kylan (or maybe Kaylan, but definitely pronounced Kylan). Perhaps it is a bastardisation of a Turkish name? His parents are both Turkish and his mum told me it was a Turkish name when I commented on it

kittywise · 20/03/2009 23:58

I think Ernie's cute, but I wouldn't call a son of mine that. It will be back again soon though.
I have a Ronnie and some people here were rather disapproving when I bandied it about as a possibility. However, in RL I've always had fab reactions.

As I said I don't like those names BUT it's your child, if you like it then call him what you like

tigerdriver · 20/03/2009 23:20

lol bobbysmum. Wouldn'tcha love to meet a baby Ernest. And his handbag.

bobbysmum07 · 20/03/2009 23:11

It's a million times better than Barnaby or Monty or Ernest or half the names on here that are considered socially acceptable.

CoteDAzur · 20/03/2009 22:32

Kylan, I mean. Not a Turkish name.

CoteDAzur · 20/03/2009 22:30

It is not a Turkish boy's name.

ADealingMummy · 20/03/2009 21:39

sounds dated to me

MrsMattie · 20/03/2009 21:34

Horrid. Made up. Yuck.

Kylan is a Turkish boy's name.

Cian is Irish.

Both preferable by a mile.

CoteDAzur · 20/03/2009 21:16

Don't do it. You are not making your baby unique and precious by giving him a made up name that sounds like it came from Star Trek.

I agree that it sounds very "made up" and rather oh lets go for a name that no-one else will be called, which inevitably means taking 2 names or even things and merging the 2 eg Ryan and Kian etc etc etc.
But if you like it........

stleger · 18/03/2009 21:51

My neighbour (in Cork) is Cian. He is the most giggly 10 year old I know. Cian gets my vote!

RachieB · 18/03/2009 21:45

Kyan looks and sounds made up

Cian is lovely

duchesse · 18/03/2009 21:13

Neither does anything for me I'm afraid. Both sound made up or misspelled.

slowreadingprogress · 18/03/2009 21:04

Don't like either name, they're both chavvy.

Kiron sounds like a cleaning fluid

Kyan sounds made up and is very ugly

kittywise · 18/03/2009 20:22

No don't like either sorry

seeker · 18/03/2009 20:20

Kiran is a girl's name - your ds had a lucky escape, barleycorn!

Does no one like Kier?
