Scottish Islands- ok names?

There is also a small Island (off the Isle of Lewis) called Rona, I have met several girls with that spelling as well as the more common Rhona (sounds the same).

I like it but dh didn't and in the end we went for a family name for dd2.

Iain is lovely (my brother and I know several little boys with it too). My dd2 is now 5 and has 2 SHonas in her friend list, but she is at the Gaelic school in Glasgow so suppose we get more of those sort of names. Her teacher went on Mat leave and has called her little boy Tormond (gaelic for Norman)!

oh yes, love Murray, Ailsa and Eilidh from those above.
And Effie (from Euphemia) - not really Scottish, but used in Scotland a lot in the past.

What about Rona/Rhona? Ron is Gaelic for seal and there are several islands called Rona.
Taran - short for Taransay (island off Harris)
Bernie - for Bernera (ho ho)

And a friend had a Kerrera (the island opposite Oban).

My problem with Ruairi/Ruairidh are that people pronounce as Ruary, which is not the Gaelic pronunciation. I think going with Rory is a better move too.

I gather Scillonians, and those with Scilly connections, are keen on using island names for their children. So you get Mary, Helen, Martin, Samson and Agnes, and, more unusually, Tean, Bryher, Annet etc. A friend of mine joked about calling his son Great Crebawethen but luckily perhaps has had 3 girls ...

My DC have Scottish names and DD has always said that she loves her name, especially as we live abroad so it unusual here.

I went to college with a Lorne. He got loads of mail addressed to "Lorna".

Where is the island called Cala? I live in Scotland and I don't think I've ever heard of it.

IME, the more masculine sounding island names are often used as dog's names (Jura, Coll). Lewis is very very very very very common popular as a boy's name up here.

I once encountered a child whose name was Tiree. I only know this because said child was being shouted at by the accompanying adult in the airport in Lanzarote (just off the Glasgow flight). Dressed in white T-shirt, red shorts and with at least one ear pierced, I have absolutely no idea what sex s/he was.

ho some suggestions - I always think the best names are those that are quite unusual without shouting it from the rooftops IYKWIM ?

I was so convinced DS was a third girl I was calling him Muireann until the scan showed he was definitely a boy.

I patted the bump and said, 'Sorry for calling your Muireann, Struan.'

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEEE Ailsa, I wanted to called DS Ailsa if he were a girl. I just love it, although we have no Scottish connections beyond hillwalking.

Also ADOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRE Iona, know a lovely, lovely old Iona.

cala expat and I both hankered after a wee Muiranne but she had a boy and my DH and I decided as he is Irish and I'm Scottish we'd not pick too celtic sounding names so ended up with one Latin, one Greek and one Italian for our girls

We actually spelt it Mirren, but wish now we had spelt it Muirann (if that is right!) but didn't as it would have not really gone with ds1's name.

We'd have another name chosen for DD1, but when she was born she didn't look like it at all.

After a few days in hospital - it was a difficult delivery - she was an angel baby and the midwives would come and see her and take her away to feed her whilst I slept.

And one said, 'If you ask me, she looks a wee [her name].'

And she did!
