Ooh - I looked up the Lollipop I mentioned earlier, and she's unique! Nobody else with that name on ancestry.co.uk. Wonder why?

LunarSea · 13/03/2009 11:14

mrswoolf - did you spot a Cain Lucifer there too?

Fimbo · 13/03/2009 11:00

There was a girl in the local paper the other day - Lucinder. Do you think the parents didn't know it should be Lucinda?

My brother was at school with a Damien.

LunarSea · 13/03/2009 08:29

I met a Jezebel once - mum clearly didn't know the, um, negative associations of it. And today came across a girl called Lollipop which I had to do a double-take at.

suwoo · 12/03/2009 12:59

I know a real life Judas and a Tiger .

lemonadesparkle · 12/03/2009 12:57

Wiggletastic, he coped just fine (although copped a few detentions from supply teachers who thought he was taking the preverbial) went to top University and doing very well for himself these days I believe. Luckily for him, we lived and grew up in a bit of a bohmenian bubble where it wasn't so odd and nothing was considered stranger than mediocrity

belgo, The matches were called Lucifers because of the association with the bringer of light.

belgo · 12/03/2009 10:42

It makes me think of matches.

AnnVan · 12/03/2009 10:41

Interestingly it makessense that Lucifer means bringer of light - after all Lucifer was the angel of light before he rebelled against God and was cast from heaven. (My Dad's a preacher so I was brought up with this stuff)

TheCrackFox · 12/03/2009 10:27

Actually I think that is the worst name I have ever heard, and I am normally non judgy about names.

You would have thought someone (grandma, midwife, HV, registrar) might have told them what it means.

clumsymum · 12/03/2009 10:19

I think this poor kid's background suggests that his parents don't have any understanding of what the name means or where it comes from.

I don't think reading is high on their list of chosen activities. I suspect they have heard the name somewhere, and thought "that sounds nice, and there aren't a lot of them about".

F me!

That is beyond the pale. He'll be thankful for deed poll!

I sometimes think registrars should have a 'panic button' linked direct to some higher authority with the pwer to prevent this sort of thing.

HeadFairy · 12/03/2009 08:22

If you wanted to give your child a name that meant light or giver of light, why not Luke rather than Lucifer. Obviously nasty parents/satanists. Poor child

throckenholt · 12/03/2009 08:13

I knew a little boy (must be about 7 now) called Tygre - even worse than Tiger in my opinion.

wiggletastic · 12/03/2009 08:11

Yikes lemonadesparkle! Thats just cruel. How did the lad cope?

lemonadesparkle · 11/03/2009 23:00

wiggletastic, I had a boyfriend (many moons ago) called Judas - according to his mother grandma had requested/insisted the baby was given a biblical name

edam · 11/03/2009 22:49

Even without the Satanic associations, poor kid is bound to be nicknamed 'Lucy' which is not at all helpful for a boy.

edam · 11/03/2009 22:48

lol at nervous Tiger.

Lucifer, though? Are they mad? Or Satanists? Or so careless they don't actually know what it means?

Nontoxic · 11/03/2009 22:45

When we registered DS2, the lady commented that she liked his (good solid) name, and said that they'd recently managed to dissuade a couple from the name Lucifer - the father's idea, apparently.

And I knew a tiger years ago - had to stifle a laugh when the mother insisted on staying with him at DD's party as 'Tiger's a bit nervous at parties.'

CharCharGabor · 11/03/2009 22:38

Normally I'm pretty non-judgy, but Lucifer! Why oh why would you think that was a good idea?

minouminou · 11/03/2009 22:36

Lucifer actually means bringer or bearer of light, but obviously, like cyteen says - it's gone beyond usability.

wiggletastic · 11/03/2009 21:10

Ooh, Gossipmonger, there was a little boy on some property show on the telly the other day called Tiger - I wonder if its the same poor little lad - surely there aren't two!?

BakewellTarts · 11/03/2009 21:04

Trust he's shortened it to Luc which is OK...
