long fancy girls name to match other DC...

I have daughters named Genevieve (Gigi) and Celestine (Celeste), and a son named William (Billy).
I'm now pregnant with DC4, another girl.
We're seriously considering;

Violet / Violette - only problem is what to shorten either to (Vivi would be confusing alongside Gigi.) Don't like Letty.

Ottilie - nn Lottie/Lotta since Tilly wouldn't work well with Billy! Any other ideas what it could be shortened to?

Marianna - nn Mimi (DH's favourite as named after his late mother). Tennysons depressing poem puts me off a bit. Also concerned that wouldn't match well with our surname, a Mc name of 3 syllables.

Evangeline - but Evie would be confusing with Gigi. Know of any other nn's?

Emmanuelle - nn Esme or Emmy. (My favourite because a family name on my side) but yes we do know the 70's soft porn connotations. Does it really matter??!

If you have a minute, which do you think "goes" best with my other children, or can you think of anything better? (Francesca has bad associations for me; DH doesn't like Josephine; DH is Irish but we don't want a traditional Irish name; DH doesn't want anything that sounds Scottish; meanings are important to us, as is being unusual (for girls).

Fimbo - Jocasta sounds quite Scottish to me, but perhaps I'm wrong?

And more!

lockets - Patience is adorable actually! wouldn't have thought of that in a million years!

pestomonster - Agree Valentina sweet, but think Violet/te is my fave V name. And can't get past "Val" as nickname - old neighbour who moaned that our kids were too noisy in the garden (where are they allowed to be noisy then?!)

rindercella again - I won't ignore you! Abitheah has a lovely ring to it, but know quite a few Abi's (=bad).

Horton - Emmeline, hmmm, I have a sister Emily, she would probably see that as a compliment! Good idea!

MrsMattie - I know where you're coming from with Gigi & Mimi. I have visions of people hearing me call it in the park, and expecting to see 2 poodles running up! DH actually calls Celeste "Cissy" and I know that he will find some similarly-twee nn for the new baby too... nothing I can do about it, apart from not use it myself! (Celeste is 2 1/2 and tells off anyone but DH who calls her Cissy!) Another vote for Delphine and Seraphina.... I am going to research those and suggest to DH later.

belgo · 11/03/2009 17:15

Rindercella - how do you pronounce Abitheath?

Rindercella · 11/03/2009 17:14

See, Abitheah always gets ignored. Is it really that bad?!

Fimbo · 11/03/2009 17:06

Pesto, I was at school with Lauretta/Laurie, first time I have seen it spelt that way which is probably why it was shortened to Laurie.

hedgiemum · 11/03/2009 17:03

Wow! you're all so quick! Write a message, do the school run, and then come home to so many suggestions, thank you!

Puppymonkey - I forgot to mention I'm trying to avoid names with same initial as existing DC as it gets confusing later in life sometimes. Madeleine cute though, will ask DH.

Nemo - Giselle to close to Genevieve. Love Victoria but perhaps too "normal" to match other DC..?

Lynette - glad to see someone else loves Ottilie! Delphine is cute. Makes me think of Oracle of Delphi, must look up what she was like...?

PinkFairy - this is confirming my suspicions that its hard to get over the connotations with Emmanuelle, thank you.

Tillys - Dorothea isn't something I'd have come up with alone, but actually my favourite writer is Dorothy Dunnett, it could be in honour of her! Not keen on Dotty though, and already have nephew and a godson called Theo, so Thea confusing. Perhaps you've come up with the middle name! Persephone is COOL but was she an evil Greek goddess or a good one? Classics not my strong suit... Another thing I'll have to wiki in a minute...

lastbox - Think Angie really cute, but is it a bit passe? Only hear it on 40-50 year olds mostly, or does that mean its due a revival? DH suggested Angel as nn but I think its a bit to twee, even for us! Glad someone other than me has known a nice Emmanuelle! I think you're right that Valentina works better as a middle name (Isabel Valentina is uber cute!). I think if I go for a V name it'll be Violet/te. Alexandra very popular at my DD's school (= bad). Aurora - is it a bit too Disney? Mind you, there has been a recent barbie called Genevieve! Managed to keep Gigi away from barbie until she saw her!

Bakersman - VERY helpful - saying exactly what I want to hear about Emmanuelle!! Have actually been playing around with -Bella names, and only one I could come up with that not very well used around here is Amabel/le. Is it pronounced to rhyme with Annabelle, and if so will we (and she) constantly be correcting people who will "hear" it as Annabelle?

IwishIwere - Violette 'goes' better - I think I agree with you. Not sure if Hetty pretty enough to match other nn's but your spelling of Hetti reads better, hmmmm.... Suggested Anastacia but DD1 vetoed as an ugly stepsister in Cinderella!

Wallace - how is Euphemia pronounced? Esmerelda doesn't grab me, don't know why.

Sleepyeyes - Seems to be most votes are for Ottilie. Aurelia is cute, actually, what would nn be?

Rindercella - I have always wanted to call a girl Miranda; The Tempest is my favourite Shakespeare play. DH hates it - he only knows it through SATC.

belgo - Seraphina is gorgeous, must pass that one past DH.

Thanks everyone so far! Loads of ideas and opinions!

Rindercella · 11/03/2009 16:54

I always say this name on this sort of thread, but get ignored. How about Abitheah, shortened to Abi?
