long fancy girls name to match other DC...

I have daughters named Genevieve (Gigi) and Celestine (Celeste), and a son named William (Billy).
I'm now pregnant with DC4, another girl.
We're seriously considering;

Violet / Violette - only problem is what to shorten either to (Vivi would be confusing alongside Gigi.) Don't like Letty.

Ottilie - nn Lottie/Lotta since Tilly wouldn't work well with Billy! Any other ideas what it could be shortened to?

Marianna - nn Mimi (DH's favourite as named after his late mother). Tennysons depressing poem puts me off a bit. Also concerned that wouldn't match well with our surname, a Mc name of 3 syllables.

Evangeline - but Evie would be confusing with Gigi. Know of any other nn's?

Emmanuelle - nn Esme or Emmy. (My favourite because a family name on my side) but yes we do know the 70's soft porn connotations. Does it really matter??!

If you have a minute, which do you think "goes" best with my other children, or can you think of anything better? (Francesca has bad associations for me; DH doesn't like Josephine; DH is Irish but we don't want a traditional Irish name; DH doesn't want anything that sounds Scottish; meanings are important to us, as is being unusual (for girls).

dizzydixies · 13/03/2009 21:08

hedgie, we have 3 girls all with shortened versions too, I personally just love the choice it gives them

good luck in whatever your choose, there are some great suggestions on here

hedgiemum · 13/03/2009 20:03

We're just a shortening-names kind-of-family, I guess, mrsschadenfreude; everyone is shortened in someway or another - apart from me with my deadly dull short name! I don't think names should be or shouldn't be shortened, its just nice to have given name/s with the potential for a few different options.
2helenback - I've heard a few different pronounciations of Sheherazade, but have a friend whose daughter is called that; pr shu-hera-zard ; its the name of the girl in the arabian nights stories.

Lots more lovely suggestions from people, thank you, will sit dh down to read this thread over w/e to see if anything else jumps out at us.

Another vote for "why give long fancy names when you're only going to abbreviate them?" Both of my DDs have long fancy names , both mentioned on this thread (one of them one of your choices) and not abbreviated at all. Oh except we call DD2 Dottydoodah or Dot occasionally...

2Helenback · 13/03/2009 08:21

How do you pronounce Sheherazade?

Artemis? - Missy or Artie
Cassiopeia?- Cassie or Opie

stars or constellations could give some inspiration. (Not Uranus or Milky Way though...)

Meglet · 12/03/2009 23:26

Just adding my tuppence worth..... Constance is so pretty. It was on my short list for DD.

Nyx · 12/03/2009 23:13

My gran was Euphemia, as was my favourite primary teacher (a while ago now!) One was shortened to Etta, and the other to Fay.

My fave from these is probably Gabrielle.

dizzydixies · 12/03/2009 21:12

Carmelita
Veronique

KateF · 12/03/2009 17:48

How about Manuela instead of Emmanuelle? I'm reading a book with a character called Hippolyta (nn Polly)which might suit you. My friend's sister is Gianetta (nn Netty) which I love and as I'm stopping at 3dds I'll let you have it!

mackerel · 12/03/2009 17:33

Sorry. I'm with your DH on Marianne/marianna. DD4 was nearly that but ended up a Florence. I have a Clementine too. Having heard some poor kid being called over by his mum on the beach, I'd personally not go to big on greek mythology - Zeus, Zeus, come over here, Zeus....really, not joking. However, saying that quite like Penelope. I also like lots of Shakespeare - originated names like viola and have an Olivia.
