Jayden

OP posts:

"No name is 'chavvy' or 'snobby'. A name is a noun not an adjective.

You can not describe someone by thier name"

Well, actually, if we are going to get technical, nouns are described using adjectives.

piratecat · 10/03/2009 12:38

i just knewit was going to be that name (runs off)

chaya5738 · 10/03/2009 12:34

Not sure why people get so upset about the word "chav" but then think it is ok to describe a name they don't like as "American."

Actually, I almost fell off my seat when I opened this thread as it is my number one hated named and did hear it yelled down the supermarket aisle just yesterday.

To be honest, if we are going to have to be careful about openly discussing a name lest someone lost a child with that name and might open this thread then we won't end up discussing names at all.

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:32

Tarquin sounds like a fish...

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:32

btw..gunnerbean

No name is 'chavvy' or 'snobby'. A name is a noun not an adjective.

You can not describe someone by thier name.

When i was younger I was a 'yob' as I rode around on my bike, running people over. You can not simply call me a 'yob' beacuse my name is Michelle.

btw is Michelle chavvy or snobbish???

Mumcentreplus · 10/03/2009 12:28

Tarquin is the number one ponce name..hehehe

Blu · 10/03/2009 12:18

My answer to the OP is:
it is judgmental to make any assumptions / value judgements about names. They are all subjective, we all have personal preferences but it is obviously provocative to ask whether a particular name is the ultimate representative of qualities thought to be derogative. As 'chav' is.

You are being disingenous in the way you insist that you have asked a qestion, rather than made a statement. The implication of your question is that if not this name, then some other is the 'no 1 chav name'. Which is judgmental and derogatory. And would be equally judgemental and derogatory if it was 'no 1 ponce name', for e.g.

Personally I think labelling peple as chav is horrible. It is intended as an insulting term, and used as such.

And it all adds up to a horrible thread.

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:12

MrsFogi - A lad at my school was called 'Jay' and was a complete 'Chav'!

Chellesgirl · 10/03/2009 12:11

Lavender star I agree. I am going to use the name Jayden for my next child if I have a boy.

I have used the name 'chav' on here regarding myself and I have also been called' snobby'

Which one should I be?

I think the word chav is though of as that 14 year old lad who walks around the streets with his 'boys' and maybe called 'jayden' shouting and swearing, riding his monkeybike around and asking people for a fight.

But I also know of 'Snobs' that are called 'Jayden' and are dressed in the golfing shirt and cream trousers reciting the pythagouras theorem.

Todays society is in some parts so demorilised. But i's like to let you know too that a 'chav' can be clever but hide it and a 'snobby' person can be the cocaine addict.

Mumcentreplus · 10/03/2009 12:11

The only name in history that is completely and utterly 'chav'...(which in itself is a very shakey concept because it just meant 'young child' till the DM got hold of it)is Chardonnay...

georgimama · 10/03/2009 12:07

If everyone is so offended by this thread, report it. Stop keeping it in active convos by posting on it.

I am aware that I have just posted on it, but then I am not offended by it, and it would be impossible to say "stop posting on it if you don't like it!" without posting on it.

MrsFogi · 10/03/2009 11:56

For goodness sake, any name can sound "chav" if yelled down the aisle of a supermarket. Having not ever heard that name being yelled in a supermarket and at a first glance, in response to op's question - No, I don't think it is. Being objective, I think it could be okay and could be shortened to Jay which I think is quite an attractive name. The name really doesn't matter it's the comportment of the child/its parents that can be classed as "chav" and it really doesn't matter if they're called Digby or Jayden.
Btw, ridiculous thread to start as you clearly were trying to be offensive rather than to solicit opinions on a potential choice of name.

nickytwotimes · 10/03/2009 11:37

Yes, op wasn't seeking opinions, she was just being mean about a child's name.
Horrible.

OP your weren't seeking opinions though - you were giving your opinion in a very nasty way! You are obviously not thinking of using Jayden as a future name for your child so why post?

fruitstick · 10/03/2009 10:59

I thought the idea of this section was to get opinions on your own name choices, not insult other people's.

Gunners, if someone posts asking for opinions on the nam, knock yourself out. Until then, pipe down love.

LavenderStar · 10/03/2009 10:55

Come on guys ... I very much doubt Gunnerbean knew about the bereaved parent (whom my thoughts go out to).

Is the word "chav" any more offensive than labelling a name pretentious/snobby etc? Would people who have sons called Tyler etc actually be offended by this post or are we trying to speak on their behalf - perhaps they don't care and would rather their son had a "chav" name than what they might think of as a "pompous" name (I won't suggest any examples!)

In any case, I don't think Gunnerbean's post was meant malicously so there's no need for so much agression here.

ForeverOptimistic · 09/03/2009 20:48

I don't actually think you are a "chav" I was just trying to make a point.

ForeverOptimistic · 09/03/2009 20:46

I may start a new thread - Is Gunnerbean the biggest Chav on MN?

Offensive??? Yes but then so is your original post.

oh dear, gunner, i didn't realise that someone had lost a wee boy of this name either, but if so it might be an idea to get it gone.

i just objected to chav and the fact that you know for sure it's really going to hurt someone's feelings on here.

harpsichordcarrier · 09/03/2009 20:36

OK listen carefully:
you are being insulting to many people who have chosen that name.
chav is an offensive term only used by people with no taste or judgment.
I think that covers it

nickytwotimes · 09/03/2009 20:35

There's someone on here who lost a child with that name.
Also, many people hate the word chav and most threads with the word chav will be challanged.
