A serious question- is silly, bold or cool?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
mrsruffallo · 10/03/2009 10:35

I was only joking about affecting a German accent

Auf Deutsch -

It's pronounced 'Volf' - to rhyme with 'Rolf'.

Still like it?

mrsruffallo · 10/03/2009 09:26

Hmm,I don't have a German accent but I could pretend I guess (ex drama student)
Seriously, the more I think about it the more I like it!

I want to know his name as well Cory!

nicefleece · 10/03/2009 08:36

Don't like it - would you be embarassed when they call it in the Drs?
Also, what if he dead quiet and shy? He won't thank you as a teen!
Agree - trying too hard...

SobranieCocktail · 10/03/2009 08:34

Oooh cory - what's his name?

cory · 10/03/2009 08:32

If you have German connections and are going to pronounce it in German, then fine. Or Ulf if you lean more towards the Scandinavian.

My ds has never had any problem with his own Scandinavian animal name, though I am sure Seeker would tell us he'd be bullied because it's unpronouncable (he isn't) and that he'd be miserable always having to tell people how to spell it (he doesn't mind).

But I think it helps having some sort of connection or reason for a name like that.

MadaMoo · 09/03/2009 23:59

Or Werewolf?

I still do not get it!

Sorry I just could not resist...

redpyjamas · 09/03/2009 23:52

how about Beowulf as an alternative?

thumbwitch · 09/03/2009 23:52

not keen on it in the UK, tbh. Not having read all the thread, have you been watching too much CSI Miami?

MadaMoo · 09/03/2009 23:50

I too am in the "a name is for life" boat.

I just do not get it!

seeker · 09/03/2009 23:41

Can you REALLY not imagine what it would be like to be an 11 year old boy starting Secondary school called Wolf? Because I can - an I'm a troglodyte. I would imagine that it would be so much easier for all you sophisticated metropolitan types, with your skinny lattes and Jimmy Choos.

minouminou · 09/03/2009 23:28

Go a bit more Scando maybe? Ulf? Ulfgar? Middle name material i reckon.

Mummyfor3 · 09/03/2009 23:23

No. Too Hitler Youth-y.

sw1 · 09/03/2009 23:19

Walf? Wolf? Clingons???

seeker · 09/03/2009 23:19

Klingon - now there's a name to conjure with!

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 09/03/2009 22:58

I just think the other kids would hooooooowwwwwwwlll at him in the playground... sorry! (Not to mention if he ever went to cubs, just imagine...)

seeker - re: your third paragraph, neither do I. But I also don't see the need to tailor my choice of name around the preferences of the aforementioned trogs.

Boco · 09/03/2009 22:15

Goodness this is the spikiest baby name thread evah! Angry pixies and troglodytes all over the place!

I even bought the mn name wolfie in the name auction because I heart wolfie smith. come the revolution!

SobranieCocktail · 09/03/2009 22:12

angrypixie - have you not been here long? MNers around the world will be getting out the popcorn to watch a good fight. They love it. But if you can't stand the heat...nighty night.

seeker · 09/03/2009 22:11

"seeker - I think it probably depends largely on whether you live in an area full of narrow-minded, provincial troglodytes, or somewhere a bit more metropolitan."

So long as you are sure your child is never going to come across any narrow minded provincial troglodytes (charming use of language, by the way) then call him whatever you like.

Personally I don't regard naming another human being as an opportunity to show the world how free thinking, unconventional and - what was it? Oh yes - metropolitan I am. I think of it as giving a gift to my child that will help their confidence and self esteem. Not to make them a potential figure of fun. But that's troglodytes for you.
