Thanks for everyone's help on my previous "Isaac vs Bruno" thread! DH and I both love Isaac but not sure what we would call any future siblings. I think a lady with an Isaac also posted it was different to her other siblings' names ... but since I am the sort of person whos shoes always match her handbag ... it would bother me if my children's names did not "match"! I'm not sure I want to be restricted to just biblical names.

SO, our new name is Toby. What does everyone think? What kind of person do you think of when you hear the name? I posted about this name ages ago and know it means something rude in Scottish but since I'm not Scottish and don't live in Scotland this doesn't bother me.

I like classic boys names like Oliver, George, Harry, James, Jack, William etc. Does Toby "go" in this sort of category of names?

My feeling is it is fairly posh (fine by me!) but also maybe a bit "wet" (not so great)?! I don't know if this is because I am thinking of Toby Macguire or Toby Anstis though!

I really like it. I have an uncle called Toby, which, dyslexically, is short for Anthony!

Have also come across a Tobin if you don't like Tobias.

wheesht · 10/03/2009 22:01

My lovely friend (who is an mner) called her gorgeous little boy Toby. Is a lovely name

And I'm Scottish and living in Scotland and have never heard of it meaning something rude!

mumoftoby · 10/03/2009 21:53

I have a Tobias Luke who we call Toby. We aren't posh and he is a fab little boy (in my very biased opinion!)

lunamoon2 · 10/03/2009 17:15

Actually hated the name when I first heard it (many years ago) as it sounded like a nickname (Is it short for Tobias?)
But now rather like it! I think it has grown on me as it is creeping up in popularity.
If you like the name and it doesn't sound foolish with your surname then go for it!

Wheelybug · 10/03/2009 16:18

actually have just remembered - no it wasn't. Must just be a coincidence !

Wheelybug · 10/03/2009 16:18

ooh CSWS - caught me !

Ummm... trying to remember. I think they would be 35 ish and 38 ish now (Toby being the eldest). This was in sussex.

CantSleepWontSleep · 10/03/2009 16:13

Wheelybug - did your Toby/Barnaby have a surname beginning Cur?

angrypixie · 10/03/2009 14:32

Prefer Tobin to Toby - I just think of Toby Jug.

Also Charlotte Emily is very Bronte!

However all so personal, and if you love them use them

kayzr · 10/03/2009 14:17

We were going to call DS2 Toby but I posted on here and all I got was "No don't do it as it is sland for penis, especially in Scotland". It put me off and DS2 is now called Dylan.

insywinsyspider · 10/03/2009 14:11

he's Toby Mark btw after my dad - it goes with most other tradional names, if he was born a bit closer to christmas he would have been Toby Nicholas

insywinsyspider · 10/03/2009 14:09

ds2 is Toby, ds1 is Oliver so imo it goes well with the 'category' of names you listed

dislike Tobias btw, I think Toby stands up as a name in its own right... but then I would say that!

TheRealSecretLemonadeDrinker - my Toby is huge as well! not massive but solid, he's only 14 months and in 18-24mon clothes and I could see him playing rugby in the future, he's always been such a physical baby
and couldn't agree more with your reasons about it being a universal name, fits in well in a comprehensive as well as private school - its becoming very popular where I live

TheRealSecretLemonadeDrinker · 09/03/2009 21:40

posting again - I am a thread stalker - my Toby is huge for his age and anything other than a wuss - in fact I spend most of my time stopping him from piling into things/ small children/walls: he is very physical and named after a great friend who was a brilliant rugby player. T cannot wait to be old enough to play too.

TheRealSecretLemonadeDrinker · 09/03/2009 21:37

god - sorry to post again! ours is Tobias, but in retrospect I would have put Toby on the birth form - he will never be called that and it just confuses him

TheRealSecretLemonadeDrinker · 09/03/2009 21:36

he is Toby James, if that helps. His yonger brother is Ben, which I also think is a dustman or general type of name

TheRealSecretLemonadeDrinker · 09/03/2009 21:34

my ds1 is Toby - and it has always been my fav name... it's meaning is beautiful too - gift from god. he goes to a school of v mixed walks of life and there are several Toby's there from different backgrounds - none of which you would call posh. I always thought it was a name that would get him anywhere in life and so far he has had nothing but positive feedback from it.

monkeyA · 09/03/2009 21:31

Hi, haven't posted before but thought I'd add to this thread as I have a baby Toby and know of one other. Siblings are Lucas, Matthew and Peter. Hope this helps.

supergluebum · 09/03/2009 21:12

I love Toby, but I also know a little boy called Tobin! Fab name and Toby Alexander is lovely, my DS middle name is Alexander, love it

ChasingSquirrels · 09/03/2009 18:41

I'm not sure that I am madly keen on it.

BUT

my ds2 is Toby Alexander - go figure! It has grown on me.

wotulookinat · 09/03/2009 18:35

Toby is a good name.
My DS's middle name is Jacob, after a dog that I had when I was younger. One of my dog's now is called Toby, and I would like Toby to be the middle name of a subsequent son, should I have one. The other dog is called Taz, which I shan't use on a child!

MsBeauregarde · 09/03/2009 18:27

Toby Nicholas sounds good or Toby Daniel.

weblette · 09/03/2009 17:30

Hmm now I find Giles posh and don't know any children with that name - mind you that's maybe because it features in the name of place I live

LavenderStar · 09/03/2009 16:48

Okay .. so Toby not too posh (like Giles) then?!

OP posts:
weblette · 09/03/2009 16:24

Thanks Lavender

His middle name is Timothy after dh's late brother.

PlumpRumpSoggyBaps · 09/03/2009 15:50

Aw thanks Lavender! (coy emoticon)

LavenderStar · 09/03/2009 15:37

Plump - love your children's names, you have very good taste IMO!
