Eleri Samphire?

Just typing it I feel like the answer may be yes.

DD2 is due in a few months. DD1 (15mths) is called Megan Juliet. Her second name is after my sister who died.

I wanted another Welsh first name for this little girl, although living in England now, but have been struggling for a middle name.

People have raised eybrows at the name Eleri - is Samphire adding fuel to the fire?

DH and I are prepared for fulla nd franck feedback. What do you really think?

I eould have mispronounced it.

ScummyMummy · 01/03/2009 21:44

Eleri Rose is nice.

suwoo · 01/03/2009 21:42

As you can see from this thread, most non welsh speakers would perhaps mis-pronounce it, would that not really piss you off? Did you grow up in NW or South?

ScummyMummy · 01/03/2009 21:42

I think Samphire sounds like the name of a cheeky mermaid or young sea witch. However, I don't think middle names need to be vetted and worried about in quite the same way as first names, tbh. They are not nearly as public and I think you can therefore use a bit more creativity/take a few more risks without worrying so much about the possible negative response of others/later hatred of your child, as they don't loom that large in day to day life. If she hates Samphire she need never use it and no one will question that. She might love its unusualness and want to use it and that'd be fab. If you were suggesting Samphire as a first name I would say no, personally, as she would have to run the gamut of eyebrow raises and smirks every time she introduced herself but as a middle name I don't think she'd be affected in the same way.

janeite · 01/03/2009 21:41

Eleri Isabella sounds nice. Love Isabella.

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:41

unfortunately I know/knew some not very nice girls named Cerys which sort of puts me off. Cerys is lovely name though.

We did think of Eleri Mae, Eleri Rose or Eleri Grace - what do you think?

Su you are right - my pregnant brain found it almost impossible to describe how to pronounce it.

I pronounce it the first way too

flimflammum · 01/03/2009 21:39

I thought of Saffron as an alternative too, but then you think of Saffie from Ab Fab.

What about Cerys? Or is that too common in Wales?

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:38

DH likes Eleri Isabella. Doesn't have to be a Welsh middle name. DH isn't Welsh and neither am I but I grew up there and feel Welsh.

Not keen on Saffron though sorry

suwoo · 01/03/2009 21:37

I would pronounce Eleri, Ell-eri if saying it with the correct welsh accent or Ell-Ary, not quite how you said. Don't live in Wales anymore, but am a welsh speaker.

preggersplayspop · 01/03/2009 21:33

Eleri is lovely, I was brought up in Wales so it doesn't sounds unusual to me.

Samphire - I thought sounded ok, bit odd, but now I know its a vegetable it would just be cruel!

How about Saffron instead....yes, I its still a cooking ingredient, but it works a bit better!!

janeite · 01/03/2009 21:32

Do you like any of my Shakespeare ones?

Or do they have to be Welsh?

CuppaTeaJanice · 01/03/2009 21:32

Eleri is too much like Hilary, one of my least favourite names, and Celery, one of my least favourite foods! Never tried samphire though!!

Sapphire is lovely though, it was on our shortlist. As was Eloise.

ten10 · 01/03/2009 21:31

You say you want another Welsh name, my favourite Welsh girls name is
Genevra,

I went to school with one and always thought it was so pretty

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:30

yes Juliet was my sister.

Eleri doesn't rhyme with Celery it's pronounced ee - lary (rhymes with Mary). hope that makes sense.

Samphire really did come from desperation. I was in Wales today and went to church with my mother. The vicar talked about St David in his sermon - his mother was called Non. I told DH I liked it - he laughed and then I didn't like to admit it wasn't a joke.

Seems like Samphire would be silly so I need some alternatives please.

diedandgonetodevon · 01/03/2009 21:29

Eleri is lovely but personally think Samphire is a bit but that's possibly because I hate the taste of samphire

ScummyMummy · 01/03/2009 21:27

Eleri is nice.

beanieb · 01/03/2009 21:25

How will you be pronouncing the Eleri?

suwoo · 01/03/2009 21:25

Is it Juliet that is after your sister? That is how I read your post, if so please explain Samphire to us all

girlandboy · 01/03/2009 21:24

I like Eleri, but I actually thought you had made a spelling mistake with Samphire. I thought you meant Sapphire.

Samphire!

silkcushion · 01/03/2009 21:24

Sady we are aware of the green coastal vegetable thing.

Bit ashamed to admit it but when we were watching masterchef the other week I suggested it to DH as a joke and he really liked it.

Then it sort of grew on us!! Life is quite stressful at the moment perhaps we're having a joint breakdown and not realising it!!

OP posts:
janeite · 01/03/2009 21:23

Nope, don't like it sorry. Could get used to Eleri but Samphire is a step too far imho. How about another Shakespeare inspired middle name? Eleri Beatrice? Eleri Portia? Eleri Ophelia? Eleri Isabella? Eleri Miranda?

MinkyBorage · 01/03/2009 21:23

what catweazle says too, they do sound good together

pinkmagic1 · 01/03/2009 21:23

Like Samphire actually but not Eleri, sounds like Celery!
