How many little girls called Alicia do you know?

I wanted Electra really, but it sounds like a power tool next to my surname (rhymes with "trimmer"). So Alicia is my next best, but I would still err towards more unusual names.
Thanks!

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 27/02/2009 20:51

KNow a lovely 19 year old Alicia,
Elecrta make me think of soft porn movies (sorry!)

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 27/02/2009 20:51

I like it, don't know any and would assume it's pronounced a-LISS-ia

notsoteenagemum · 27/02/2009 20:50

There's two in the school I work in and one in ds's school. I like it spelled like that rather than the Alesha/ Alysha's that seemed to be everywhere a few years ao.

redshoes · 27/02/2009 20:47

One at dd's school. BUT I love it - was it Mallory Towers?? I remember it from childhood fiction It is a - liss - ee - a in my book

Wolfblass · 27/02/2009 20:46

I know of none!!!!

seeker · 27/02/2009 20:44

Alicia, pronounced properly as alice-i-a is very unusual. Ghastly versions like All-esha are all too common!

Chatkins · 27/02/2009 20:42

I know a little girl aged 3 called Alicia - her parents pronounce it Aleesia, I always call her Alissia, can't help it !

Don't know any others, and I am a cm, who runs a toddler group, with 2 dc in school, no other Alicias! Go for it ! Lovely name.

random · 27/02/2009 20:42

I know one ...she is 6

cheekysealion · 27/02/2009 20:40

one girl age 11

ilovepeppapig · 27/02/2009 20:38

in dd class there is a alicia pronounced a -lee-sha (aged 7) and i know a 10 yr old alicia pronounced a lis- e- a

edam · 27/02/2009 10:08

I always think the Aleesha pronunciation is based on people not knowing how to say the name. It was Alice - ee - a until very recently!

MarchNowFebMum · 27/02/2009 09:24

no little girls, just my best friend who is 35! she says a-lish-a

PuppyMonkey · 27/02/2009 08:47

I know an Aleesha, who is 12. And I spoke to someone the other day who has a four year old Alicia. I don't think it's as common today as you suspect.

Lol at Electra Strimmer type name - I'm trying to work out what your real surname is now.

I would want it pronounced A-lis-ia, as I hate R&B and A-lee-sha would remind me of that R&B singer....

I like the name Alicia (pronounced A-lee-sha) - I am biased though as its my own name! It wasn't so common when I was growing up but there was another girl in my uni who spelt her name Alesha

I do find that I have to correct people to ensure they say it properly, rather than A-lee-see-a

Something to think about...

RachieB · 26/02/2009 23:14

I loved malory towers too lol

edam · 26/02/2009 23:11

I've liked Alicia since reading Malory Towers as a child. Lovely name.

RachieB · 26/02/2009 23:09

Alicia as in a-lee-shah ? ( as its sposed to be pronounced i think ? )

i dont know any one with that name

I love the way it looks, but dont like the pronounciation

i however LOVE Elysia and Alysia and would use Alys ( welsh for Alice) as shortened form

lljkk · 26/02/2009 21:04

I went to school with a very cool Electra.
I don't like Alicia because I knew a nasty one in primary. I also used to know an Alicia about 6 years ago, she'd be 7 now.

Lilyloo · 26/02/2009 21:03

1 she is 5

beansontoast · 26/02/2009 21:03

we have both around here.i know a handful of alicias and one Elettra (italian spelling?)

loooouise · 26/02/2009 21:03

Oooh, that's reassuring, I feared it might be much more common than that. And I'm not in Bristol!
Thanks ladies!
