How many little girls called Alicia do you know?

I wanted Electra really, but it sounds like a power tool next to my surname (rhymes with "trimmer"). So Alicia is my next best, but I would still err towards more unusual names.
Thanks!

Yes, I think she was the cleverest girl at Malory Towers. Not a single Alicia in my experience of (loadsof) primary teaching.

Go for it, but expect everyone else to have the same idea.

Fact: 2 years ago there was a preprep school class in London that had TWO children called Unique. That makes me ache.

venusonarockbun · 04/03/2010 11:11

Sorry meant to say pronounced A-liss-ee-a (not ah at the end)

venusonarockbun · 04/03/2010 11:09

I know one Alicia - pronounced A-liss-ee-ah. I cant understand how it could be pronounced any other way (esp Aleesha).

Like Rosa, I would also like to know what 'meh' means. Sounds a bit of a stupid word to me!

mrsflowerpot · 04/03/2010 11:00

I don't know any Alicias. It's very very pretty BUT if it is going to bug you when people pronounce it about 70 different ways, then don't do it. I have one of those names and I answer to many different pronunciations which gets a bit wearing, because no matter how often you tell people, they will think their way of saying your name is right.

rosarugosa · 04/03/2010 10:57

sorry meant to say the original poster asked how many Alicias we know......

rosarugosa · 04/03/2010 10:56

A bet 'meh' what does that mean? It is quite rude to say that seeing as there are a lot of us with daughters with that name. The original poster asked for views on how to spell not whether we liked it the name. I know our views are subjective but there is no need to be rude. I am sure you wouldn't like us to criticise your choice of name for your children.

My DD age 6 is Alysha (pronounced Aleesha) & there was also an Alicia in her nursery (i would say that spelling is Alice-ia)
Prefer way I chose - not keen on all these old fashioned names coming back, so thought Alice was like an old aunt's name).
Have asked my DD & she loves her name - wouldn't like to have been called anything else, tho she likes her "shortened" version - Leishy (stuck after cousin wee bit older called her Leishybells when she was born)

5DollarShake · 03/03/2010 20:28

Don't like Alicia - just think it's a bit meh, and there are so many other much nicer names out there.

Please no to Electra. I mean, do you want her to be a stripper?

ellesabe · 03/03/2010 19:49

I teach in a primary school of 400+ pupils and there aren't any.

AllieW · 03/03/2010 19:17

I don't know any. I prefer the A-lis-ia pronunciation, too (a rule I also apply to Marcia - I dislike both Aleesha and Marsha).

Sunshinemummy · 03/03/2010 11:43

I know two Alyssa's. Alicia is OK.

Clary · 03/03/2010 11:14

I don't know any Alicias tho I do know an Aleisha (depending on yr pronuniation it may sound simialr).

It's a pretty name. I should add that I know a lot of small DC so it is unusual too.

Jas · 03/03/2010 11:11

Alicia (Alice-E-A) - the only one I know is my best friend who is 40.

The dds have Ellise, Elissia, Alice, and Alysha at school, all aged 9/10

yomellamoHelly · 03/03/2010 11:01

My DD is an Alicia - (Al lee seea) and we love it. Everyone comments on how beautiful the name is and I always knew my daughter would be named Alicia years before I had her! btw she is named after my late Mum Alice.

lottiejenkins · 04/03/2009 09:12

It makes me think of the queen of plastic surgery Alicia Duvall............ sorry...........

its very popular here (cumbria) in all its forms. there is one in DS's very small nursery and i am a family solicitor and i have come across it a lot over the last few years. when it comes down to it though - pick what you love -its your choice and i wouldnt necessarily be put off by how popular a name is.

Electra not my cup of tea sorry - isnt she a comic book character in daredevil?

noonki · 27/02/2009 21:26

Electra is a terrible name (I know of a lovely 5 year old who is afflicted with it)
Alicia is far nicer I know a 34 year old one but no children.
