What do you think of Genevieve Laura? How popular are Laura and Genevieve? Would Laura Genevieve sound better?

Other names I love are Lucinda, Henrietta, Antonia, Arabella, Rose,Charlotte, Clementine - they do all seem quite frilly and I wondered if Genevieve Laura is smarter, but also still feminine.

Hasn't there been a thread like this before?

Laura as first name, deff. Doesn't date. It's lovely.

Beesmummy · 27/02/2009 17:44

I thought about Genevieve, but not keen on Genny, so was going to call her Vivi. I have a stunning friend called Vivi, so that has probably coloured it a bit for me.

Bink · 27/02/2009 12:05

I've got a Laura, a Laura Mary Rosenwyn, to be total It's done her proud - you can be anything with that name, it carries no baggage and nobody messes with it nicknamewise (oh, lie, dh calls her Lolly). (You do, oddly to my mind, have to be prepared for people to think she's called Lauren - maybe because they can't believe someone has such a Nice Simple Name so they have to inflate it a bit?)

PfftTheMagicDragon · 27/02/2009 11:49

Genevieve is lovely: Gigi, Genny, Ginny, Evie, or a simple Vee......lots of shortenings, you can use one, her friends can use another.

hedgiemum · 27/02/2009 11:40

I have a Genevieve - she is Gigi for short (pronounced zhee-zhee). "Gigi" is one of my favourite films. She loves her name (so far), and so do we! I have a sister called Laura, so really like that too. I hear it quoted a lot as a name that can't be shortened, but in the family we have always called her Florrie or Flo, and her nieces and nephews call her Auntie Lor-Lor.

MrsBadger · 26/02/2009 21:40

I'd chose Laura over any of your 'frilly' selection

Harriet?

Lulubee · 26/02/2009 21:17

I think they're both lovely names, although I WISH we could get away with the French pronunciation. I also know a Genevieve who gets a mix of her full name and Gen. I'd never introduce her as Gen though, it's just an affectionate shortening for friends.

There's a 5 year old Laura in DS's class - we're convinced she's going to be Prime Minister one day, but that's another story

Wigglesworth · 25/02/2009 11:51

I like Laura (I am V V V biased though ).

AccidentalMum · 25/02/2009 11:51

I have a Genevieve and DH told everyone it was Guinevere for ages. I am sure he still has colleagues who think that we are medieval re-enacters or something!

Lovely names....Laura is beautiful and classic without being self consciously so.

Cies · 25/02/2009 11:49

I love Genevieve, pronounced the English way. I also know an adult Genevieve who has always been Genevieve, not Gen/Genny. Evie is a lovely nn too.

Marne · 25/02/2009 11:46

I don't like it (sorry), its a long name, just think about when they need to learn to write it

I like Laura.

dinkymum · 25/02/2009 11:44

I prefer Genevieve I think hth x

MrsMattie · 25/02/2009 11:09

I know a few Laura's but all grown women. Oh, it's a lovely name, though. Bound to get more popular.

mcfee · 25/02/2009 11:04

My DD is called Laura and she is 4!

VictorianSqualor · 25/02/2009 11:04

I like Laura, a lot.

bigTillyMint · 25/02/2009 11:03

Yes, I guess it would be open to alot of mispronunciation.

And I guess if you chose the French pronunciation, people might be a bit if you are not French.

daisy5 · 25/02/2009 11:01

I know a Genevieve who is called Genevieve. It is a beautiful name and no more complicated than many other names.

LuciaRose · 25/02/2009 10:59

Sorry, forgot to answer that bit - I pronounce it Jen-a-veev - the English way. I do know about the French pronunciation, which I quite like, but I've only ever heard people over here use the English pronunciation.

I know a Laura who is 8!

Would you go for the French pronunciation of Genevieve?

LuciaRose · 25/02/2009 10:55

Thank you for all your replies. It seems like she really would get called Gen or Genny. What about Laura? I don't hear many little girls getting called Laura any more, but does it still sound a bit seventies and dated? I know quite a few women in their 30s called Laura.

I am a Genevieve and love my name. The trouble is nobody has ever called me it, always shortened to Genny.

How about Virginia? Surely due a revival? Brings to mind baggy shorts, picnics, adventures and lashings of ginger beer in a more gentle age. Aah me...

I know all names get shortened sometimes, but really - how many Genevieves or Jennifers do you know? Nope, always Jenny/Jen.
