Lysander?

It has just occurred to me that my 2 DD's names are mentioned in Jilly Cooper novels and am looking for a name for impending DS. So in that vein I am thinking of perhaps Lysander? Any thoughts? (We are otherwise thinking Scottish names - see Campbell thread).
Although, aha.....Rupert CAMPBELL-black, hadn't thought of that before. Anyway, Lysander anyone?

i really like it and had it on my boys list, until partner said it is a kind of aeroplane and not just any plane, it's the Datsun of the fighter plane world

claireybeemine · 25/02/2009 17:10

There are lots of Lysander Roads round here so that would be my first thought. Otherwise no objections

thumbwitch · 25/02/2009 17:05

it would be great if he became a great actor. I expect Mr and Mrs Bloom got a lot of stick for Orlando as well.

ruty · 25/02/2009 17:02

Yes!

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 15:26

dinky I had heard that but had forgotten. Interestiiiinnggg.......I have however just realised that one of my DD's has the same name as the girl that becomes Lysanders wife! Would that be wrong?

I think it sounds like a disinfectant spray
sorry

ruty · 25/02/2009 14:22

i know a golden labrador named Hector.

TooFoggy · 25/02/2009 13:58

Like it, also Hector

dinkymum · 25/02/2009 11:40

Love the name and LOVE the character! Definitely a go for it from me! Jilly Cooper's grandsons called Lysander too btw in case you wondered but you probably didnt but hey ho!

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 11:15

LadyT no, unlike most people on the thread you were kind and quite liked Topaz and had lots of other suggestions (I do remember Emerald being mentioned too). I think you said I hope you have a boy because boys can be lovely (probably because I am very girl orientated and already have two, so completely assumed I'd have a 3rd. Am shocked but very delighted to be having a son this time).

I do like Lysander. Need to think about it some more though.

DS2's middle name is Lysander, I don't think it's particularly poncey - he really likes it and goes through the odd phase where he says he wants to be called that instead of his first name.

Lysander was a fairly famous Spartan General (which is where we got it from)

LadyThompson · 25/02/2009 11:05

Hi Frazzled, gosh, I hope I didn't say that I hoped you had a boy because of the name Topaz. I would be amazed if I did as I like the name (though probably prefer Emerald), but perhaps I had a touch of the pregnancy mentals at the time. Glad you like Octavia (Octavia Poppy Alice) as it usually gets a slagging on here!

Please go with Lysander. It is utterly lovely.

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 10:59

Oh and BTW I love Octavia. Congrats to you!

I do know a little boy called Hercules (Hercy for short) but he is extremely posh and has 2 (yes, 2) nannies.

ladythompson hello, don't know if you remember me from my Topaz thread last year.......you said I hope you have a boy. Well, as it happens I am, but still struggling for a name. (Had decided on Annabel for a girl BTW).

OP posts:
LadyThompson · 25/02/2009 10:56

I love it. But given that we already have an Octavia, if I have a Lysander as well people will think I am a Jilly Cooper nut and, er, I am not.

I like Oleander as well.

Hercules Morse as big as a horse!

FlyMeToDunoon · 25/02/2009 10:47

My dad is called Hamish [which is enough to put me off] and he gets called Hame.

frazzledoldbag · 25/02/2009 10:46

Yes fly I just did thank you.
Hercules, now there's a name to consider..............

OP posts:
shonaspurtle · 25/02/2009 10:44

Thinking about it, I really like Hamish from your original list. I had it filed away as a name for a future ds when I realised it would sound ludicrous with our surname - dammit!

Niecie · 25/02/2009 10:44

I really like it. A bit obscure but on the right side of weird.

I wouldn't have said it was that posh as it is so unusal.

FlyMeToDunoon · 25/02/2009 10:42

Lex-Luthor
Did you see my last post on the campbell thread. It is particularly relevant to Mrsseanbean

Still whistling now.....

MorocconOil · 25/02/2009 10:41

I was in a cafe yesterday and there was a mum and toddler named Lysander on the next table. I was quite shocked when I realised his name, and it sounded really odd when she kept saying ' Noooo, Lysander the man does not want you to bang on the window. Noooo Lysander, nooo!'

shonaspurtle · 25/02/2009 10:41

You could, you could call him anything you like as a nickname (obv!) but people would probably assume his name is Alexander with Lex.

I've got a friend with a ds called Alexander (I love that name) who was adamant that he wouldn't be a Sandy...two years later, guess what. I do like Sandy though.

Quite a lot of older men in Scotland named Alexander get called Alistair (my great uncle for one). I think it's the gaelic version and presumably to distinguish them from other Alecs in the family, Scottish families traditionally being very unoriginal with names (lots of naming after family members as a matter of course).

chisigirl · 25/02/2009 10:40

I think it's a fantastic name. I've only every known one, though, and he was VERY posh. that might or might not be something that puts you off!
