I love it i love it i love it im pregnant and if i have another girl Betsy is top of the list lovely name

mumoftoby · 10/03/2009 21:56

I love Betsy as that - not shortened from Elizabeth. It is a cute, fab name

LavenderStar · 10/03/2009 11:54

Personally I don't like it. It sounds old-fashioned and I imagine someone in a laundrette with blue hair and rollers in! But then these sorts of names are making a big comeback - someone said on a post the other day they are called "shabby chic" - like Stanley etc.

dizzydixies · 09/03/2009 23:44

heavens to Betsy tis fab as a nn for elsabeth

lizmcfizz · 09/03/2009 23:39

Do not even consider it as her only name. PLEASE!

lizmcfizz · 09/03/2009 23:37

Use Elisabeth with an s. Then Betsy is even better as a pet name.

oliviasmama · 26/02/2009 02:57

Tis a complete winner. Was my No 1 choice for DD but DP kicked it out

Love it love it love it

nooka · 26/02/2009 02:25

But PuppyMonkey if your birth certificate says Betsy (or any other diminutive) then you can't lengthen it, as for anything formal your name will be Betsy, unless you change it by deed poll. People will therefore call you Betsy, and look at you very oddly if you then say "it's Elizabeth actually". Whereas the other way around no one blinks an eyelid (is that the right expression?) indeed, people often will ask what you like to be known as when you introduce yourself by a formal name (which personally I find irritating, but there we go).

Personally I have always been know by my diminutive by family and my formal name by everyone else. I would have hated not to have the option.

treacletart · 25/02/2009 19:25

I like it very much - Elizabeth would have been a favourite for DD but ds vetoed it - I was imagining shortening to Eliza or Betsy

pointydog · 25/02/2009 19:11

old woman and chubby toddler rolled into one

differentID · 25/02/2009 19:04

Name her Elizabeth and use Betsy as a pet name for her.

LaDiDaDi · 25/02/2009 19:00

It's very cute but I think it's a bit too cute for me. Fine if a nn for Elizabeth though.

unpaidworker · 25/02/2009 16:20

I love it.

LouMacca · 25/02/2009 15:50

Absolutely love Betsy!! Like others have said I would go for Elizabeth and shorten it.

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2009 15:29

But you have a choice either way. There's nothing to stop a child changing from Betsy to Elizabeth if they didn't particularly like the former. If you say they can change from Elizabeth to Betsy, what's to stop them doing it the other way too???

daizydoo · 25/02/2009 15:24

Betsy Trotwood, the Charles Dickens character!

stroppyknickers · 25/02/2009 15:08

I am going to print this off for dd! I may edit it slightly first with a think black marker. The only thing she has ever complained about is when she can't buy tutty souveneirs with her name on!

thumbwitch · 25/02/2009 14:57

I knew someone called Samantha Kate - her mum thought she would be called Sammy or a nice tomboyish name - Kate loathed her first name and called herself Kate as soon as she could choose.

If you give the child a choice, they might not choose what you would, but at least they have a choice. If you saddle them with cutesy, they might not thank you for it.

Spidermama · 25/02/2009 14:57

I love it but then Betsey Johnson is my favourite designer so it has a special place in my heart.

mammapiggy · 25/02/2009 14:54

i too like betsy - agree with puppymonkeys comments.

Betsy is a lovely name and its unique and there is nothing wrong with that.

flowerybeanbag · 25/02/2009 14:44

at mrswoolf's cat being registered as Elisabeth rather than Bessie at the vets..

Agree put Elizabeth on birth certificate.

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2009 14:42

Like Betsy. Lots.

And I always disagree with everyone who says: "ooh, but her full name on the birth certificate should be Elizabeth in case she ends up being a lawyer." Says who? Dare to be different!!!!

stroppyknickers · 25/02/2009 14:39

just out of interest (vested interest, obv) why id Betsy any more daft for a lawyer etc than Daisy or Kitty or Honey?

mazzystartled · 25/02/2009 13:38

cutesy but not ridiculous
very american possibly?
"heavens to betsey"

concur with the general elizabeth on the birth cert feeling

georgiemum · 25/02/2009 13:37

My first car was called Betsy Beetle.

I can't imagine an adult called this ('Dr Betsy to Haemotology' or 'Be upstanding for the new Chair of the Board... Betsy!').
