Bertha. Is it due a comeback? Sounds a bit like Martha and Martha is very popular now. Do you think Beth could be used for short?

It is my late grandmothers name.

Bertie (for a girl)?
My late grandmother was also a Bertha (but always nicknamed Babka, which means 'baby') however I can't bring myself to revive it in the original.

Big Bertha

Don't know why that came to mind?

Is there a robot or something called Big Bertha?

Just googles it! Was a bomb in the second world war and is a sort of golf club made by Callaway.

Would just hope she was on the petite side and never did WWII history!

VeryAnnieMary · 24/02/2009 13:58

I really like Bertha - though not Beth particularly.

ForeverOptimistic · 24/02/2009 13:28

I love Tabitha, when I was 10 I told my mum that one day I would have a little girl called Tabitha and she would be as pretty as the character on Bewitched. I do like to shorten names though and Tabby is too feline.

Bethan is a lovely name.

MrsJamin · 24/02/2009 13:27

"Bertha, lovely Bertha, you are a lovely machine and anyone who works with you will know just what I mean...."

permatired · 24/02/2009 13:26

A lot of little girls round here have floral names such as (first and middle, not two first names IYSWIM) Lily Rose, Lola Rose, India Rose, Iris, Hebe, Poppy, Daisy (but no Marigolds yet - leaving that to Adrian Mole ) which are all very girly

ForeverOptimistic · 24/02/2009 13:26

Ds has a scottish gaelic name so I think a welsh name would go well. We don't have any welsh connections but we had a lovely holiday in Pembrokeshire a couple of years.

Yes Bethan is definitely growing on me. Now I just need to get pregnant!

Bethan is beautiful. I think it is Welsh, yes.

pinkmagic1 · 24/02/2009 13:25

Yes, Iris is nice. Quite like most of the flower names. Classic and timeless imo. My nan is Violet and like that too but names such as Martha, Stanley, Percy etc just leave me cold.

PestoMonster · 24/02/2009 13:25

ok, well what about

Tabitha?

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 13:24

Ah see I think of Hilda as the entertainingly doolally aunt in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Hilda sounds sort of OK to me. I would parcel it in with Heidi and Inge.

ForeverOptimistic · 24/02/2009 13:23

Dh wouldn't like Agatha. Dh likes very girly names.

Sorry, bit of disgression there! Yes, Bethan is lovely - Welsh? - very gentle and similar in connotations to Martha I reckon

permatired · 24/02/2009 13:22

Ooh I love Iris

ForeverOptimistic · 24/02/2009 13:22

Bethany - no because of Coronation Street.
Bethan - I like very much. Is it pretty enough?

Mrs Mattie - have a look at the Mums & Dads names thread. They are debating the relative merits of Trevor, Sharon, Nigel, Karen, Maureen etc.

My parents and PIL were horrified when we called ds Charlie and thought we were joking as reminded them of a grumpy old chap at their bowls club! I do think Bertha has unattractive connotations whereas worst one could poss say about Martha is it sounds homely (is she kitchen goddess??) but I think it's lovely. Yes, Hilda Odgen associations not ideal!

PestoMonster · 24/02/2009 13:20

Have you thought about

Agatha?

womblingfree · 24/02/2009 13:20

Try typing it into babynamer.com and see if you get any alternatives that it could be a derivative of.

It's an American site so has all sorts of names that no-one else in the world would have heard of. I suspect you might well be able to come up with something from there!

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 13:20

How about Bethany?

To be honest I'm sure you could get away with Bertha. To my ears it is a prettier sound than Agnes and look how chic that is (Ines on the other hand I love!)

2pt4kids · 24/02/2009 13:19

Bethany?
Bethan?

MrsMattie · 24/02/2009 13:19

I still don't much like those names, but yeh, I take your point. I still think 'eh?' when I hear of little Iris & Stanley up the road...

Do you reckon Trevor & Sharon will come back, then?
