dh thinks this is an old lady name, I think is quite lovely and due a renaissance. Don't want to give a name that's too unusual or old fashioned, what do you think?

Sorry but I imagine she will be nicknamed syphillis

Clary · 24/02/2009 00:26

Phyllis is my MiL's name and she dislikes it so much she always uses her second name!

I don't mind it but it's not my fav old-lady name.

lotspot · 24/02/2009 00:04

i'm not normally one for names like that but it has something about it that made me smile - and part of me now wants a new baby just to call her Phyllis

i just fell in love with it lol - maybe that signals bedtime =]

NormaJeanBaker · 23/02/2009 22:23

Sis in law was called Phyllis after her gran and she changed her name as soon as she was old enough.

edam · 23/02/2009 22:22

It sounds a bit floppy and wet. All those weak sounds together with no leavening of hard consonants. And the drippy one in the Railway Children would put me right off.

FairLadyRantALot · 23/02/2009 22:19

I love the name Phyllis!

SweetTea · 23/02/2009 22:11

What about Florence?

poppycake · 23/02/2009 22:09

makes me think of the drippy little sister in the Railway children. Also had an Auntie Phyl, and even tho she was quite cool, hasn't made me warm to the name.

Phyllida is perhaps a bit "posh" but similar?

brimfull · 23/02/2009 22:07

nah

doris?

slackrunner · 23/02/2009 22:05

I think I'd be worried about nicknames. I know of a lady called Phyllis who got nicknamed 'Syph' (not by me!). Horrid I know, but you did ask, so I thought that I'd better point out a pitfall.

jemart · 23/02/2009 22:03

I too am partial to old fashioned names, but Phyllis is a bit much even for me.

Agree with others who have suggested Felicity or felicia as prettier alternatives.

Or perhaps Philippa?

thehappyprince · 23/02/2009 22:02

................no-one?
In my defence, am generally very boring and safe in name suggestions

You could make Barbara or Lorraine her middle name

thehappyprince · 23/02/2009 21:58

Oh dear....Surely someone must like it

aGalChangedHerName · 23/02/2009 21:55

Horrible!!!

Sorry

Heated · 23/02/2009 21:54

Blythe?

Baconsarnie · 23/02/2009 21:54

You could always start the renaissance, be ahead of the curve and all that.

Heated · 23/02/2009 21:53

Dilys?

ja9 · 23/02/2009 21:51

i have an auntie phyllis

makes me think

NO

thehappyprince · 23/02/2009 21:48

Ok, point taken. Will not inflict Phyllis on small child Still think it's nice though

OP posts:
LynetteScavo · 23/02/2009 21:48

Maybe it's due a renaissnance, but I'm not ready for it.

GetOrfMoiLand · 23/02/2009 21:47

lol

I see your point...

DD was very grateful to be given the name she has (she was nearly a Frances or a Gwendoline)

I do like Beryl though.

MissisBoot · 23/02/2009 21:45

No just no
