dh thinks this is an old lady name, I think is quite lovely and due a renaissance. Don't want to give a name that's too unusual or old fashioned, what do you think?

DDs' school has a Phyllis, a Phyllida and a Florence. Phyllis is a stunning child and the name really suits her.

MouseMate · 27/02/2009 05:28

My mums name (in her 70s) and she hates it with a passion. Always known as Phyl, and she even hates that.

(Mind you, she did give my sister an equally crap name that she hates with a passion, so maybe got her own back!)

shelleylou · 27/02/2009 03:17

i still dont get the old lady connotation but the only phyllis i know is my mum and shes mid 50's

BakewellTarts · 26/02/2009 20:52

My Godmother...lovely lady but definately in the blue rinse brigade...perhaps old lady chic?

catweazle · 26/02/2009 20:50

You are not serious?

MrsMattie · 26/02/2009 20:48

laughing so hard at the thought of a baby called Phyllis.

Fillyjonk · 26/02/2009 19:39

I love it, I wanted it for dd1

dp pointed out syphillis thing

still think its a great name

VeryAnnieMary · 25/02/2009 12:54

(and sorry for mis-spelling your name)

VeryAnnieMary · 25/02/2009 12:54

thehappyprice - if you love it, go for it! Don't wait until others have. A few years ago you'd have got a similay response for Edith and Mabel, now MNetters love them. I wouldn't worry about syphilis - there's always something people can say about any name. Get ahead of the curve! (Actually, I might join you!)

thehappyprince · 24/02/2009 21:24

Hooray, veryannie & horton, I'm not alone! Think the responses have succeeded in dissuading me though, hadn't even thought about syphilis . Not really a fan of old lady names in general, had deluded myself that phyllis was not one. Still like the name but will bide my time till it comes back into fashion

I love Phyllisa

delphinedownunder · 24/02/2009 20:31

What about Phillipa?

shelleylou · 24/02/2009 17:17

It's my mums name to, didnt associate it as old ladyish but that could be due to my mums age. She hates it and is always known as Phyll

MrsSeanBean · 24/02/2009 16:56

These names are on the up again. Gladys, Freda, Clodagh likewise. Apparently.

DaddyJ · 24/02/2009 16:54

Oh
Insulted someone's mother and made fellow Mner cry.

Mydia has left the building.

FatFree · 24/02/2009 16:44

Its my mums name

LauriefairycakeeatsCupid · 24/02/2009 15:24

Syphilis

No

Horton · 24/02/2009 15:20

I love Phyllis and also Dilys but I am clearly on my own here!

Edith is gorgeous.

Bucharest · 24/02/2009 14:30

Phyllis was my gran.
Still old lady without the chic.
It'll be OK when Maureen and Janet come back into fashion.

seeker · 24/02/2009 14:24

Edith?

VeryAnnieMary · 24/02/2009 14:16

I really like Phyllis! - makes me think of the railway Children (Phyllis who meant well).

Daddy-oh-my-DADDY!

DaddyJ · 24/02/2009 12:19

How about Mydia?
Sorry, being childish.

Another No.

jellybeans · 24/02/2009 12:15

Not keen on 'old lady/men' names.

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 08:07

It's not on my list, but I don't think it's that bad. I can see why it appeals to you. But in that vein I much prefer Daphne or Mabel. Or for a more contemporary feel Phoebe (although round my neck of the woods you can't swing a cat without taking out a few baby Phoebes)
