Do you think siblings names need to "go with each other"?

I have never really understood this but I am not very good when it comes to knowing what goes and what doesn't!

My DD is Eloise and we are thinking about naming the next baby (apparently a girl) Talia. The names (to me) do sound a bit funny together but that might be a bit because I am obviously very close to DD so it isn't just a name iyswim?

Anyway, do you think it matters if the names go together or not?

I personally think "names that go together" is a bizarre concept.

thumbwitch · 28/02/2009 15:02

strictmumof3 - if your friend had a DD3, would she call her Mandy?

thumbwitch · 28/02/2009 15:01

To add to that - I think Talia sounds more Greek or Italian, whereas Eloise seems more French, so maybe that's why they don't quite fit? Perhaps if you went for Natalie instead, it would "go better" with Eloise (or maybe Thandie, or Leonie)

thumbwitch · 28/02/2009 14:58

I think it does matter that the names are at least in the same sort of "category/class/bracket" [delete as appropriate]; for e.g. it would seem a little weird to have a Tarquin and a Sharon, or an Antonia and a Wayne. IMO.

And to have names that don't sound silly together (e.g. Sam'n'Ella as malfoy said)

But aside of that, I don't think it matters desperately.

Back home, there were lots of families of mixed heritage. So I knew a family with a Pablo, a Juan, and ... Dimitri. One Greek Parent and one Spanish. Other than letting people singing 'one of these things is not like the others' a lot, I can't see how it makes any difference.

My RL name is very English. My brother is called Sven. Ok, Swedish people are weirded out by this, but everyone else seems to cope.

catweazle · 28/02/2009 14:37

I knew two families whose names didn't gell.

Dh's boss had Deborah and Roxanne. Debbie did complain when she was old enough to realise that she had a boring name and her sister had a pretty name.

Another family with 4 had- in order- Michelle, Jane, Stephanie, and Tom. I always wonder whether the parents each named alternate babies, and whether Jane resented her sisters' prettier names.

Eloise and Talia doesn't sound quite right to me, but I can't put my finger on it. As someone else said, Eloise and Amelie go, as do Eloise and Madeline.

But then it's your choice

strictmumof3 · 28/02/2009 14:12

I think they go really well together. Both lovely names.

A friend called her girls Millie and Molly, to me they too similar. And i kid you not, i went to school with a Christina and her older sister was called Christine........

Thank, HeyMa!

HeyMa · 28/02/2009 13:53

oscar and arthur are fab

atowncalledalice · 28/02/2009 13:51

I have an Oscar and an Arthur. Thought about Solomon for DS2 but somehow the Germanic/Hebrew combination didn't seem to work.

HeyMa · 28/02/2009 13:45

i def think names have to "go together" or match, that is why i'm having a quandary with my DC potential name....for example you can't have a Stuart and a Carlos can you? or a Princess Anastacia Queen-Bee and a Gill? come on think about it you would want people to think the same person chose all your DCs names...

Fillyjonk · 26/02/2009 19:41

they WILL sound ok together though, you'll get used to them and they'll fit

the names of my 3 don't really "go". doesn't really matter though-doesn't grate or anything..

willowthewispa · 24/02/2009 21:43

I think Talia and Eloise go together fine - it's just if you go for two different types of names that it sounds odd. Jayden and Verity for example.

My aunt has four kids - two with quite classic/grandad names and two with quite earthy bible names and they don't sound like siblings somehow.

jammydodger · 24/02/2009 21:40

Have an Oscar and thought about Jasper for the second, but they sound too similar together, so we didn't in the end.

4andnotout · 24/02/2009 21:36

Mine all have double barrelled first names. after dd1 &2 i think dd3 would have looked as a single name iykwim.

kalo12 · 24/02/2009 21:31

eloise and talia do go together imo

Oh and after all that I forgot to say that I think your 2 names go together lovely

2pt4kids · 24/02/2009 21:24

I totally get this.
Was one reason why I didnt go with my first choice name for Ds2 as it didnt 'go' as well with Ds1's name.

I know a family with 4 children where 2 names were chosen by the Mum (pretty, girly, not unusual names) and 2 names were chosen by the Dad (made up, quite masculine, very quirky names)!

soon2befamilyof4 · 24/02/2009 21:19

Thanks everybody.

I think they sound great together. Whatever names you choose (as long as it's not getting stupid like some of the examples) will sound right because you'll hear them a million times.

My brothers eldest two begin with the K/C sound and the eldest was a twin with the same. Because the next three were different it doesn't sound as bad as it did when it was jsut the two.

It was important for me deciding, I thought long and hard about a name to go with Tinker Belle before coming up with Fifi

lunamoon2 · 24/02/2009 14:18

I think both names are lovely and do go together.
I do understand when people say they want a name the goes well with their other choice of name.
It would seem strange (but this is just my opinion) if someone had say a Fifitrixabelle-Anastacia and a Catherine. The names just don't seem to fit one family.

LuLuBai · 24/02/2009 09:50

I think Eloise and Talia do go really well together. I think names need to sound right together but that is so subjective. I think usually if parents love both names then they usually go fairly well together. Obviously excessive rhyming or alliteration can be a bit but go with your instincts. My DD has a Spanish name and the name we currently hav as number one choice if the next one is a girl is a Dutch name. We think they work together... Both reasonably unusual without being completely way out there. But given DD's name we felt that a very trad British name like Kate or Jane would sound a little odd for baby2.
