Alexandra - question for mummies who know Alexandras

Are your daughters happy with the name Alexandra? Does having a unisex name for a girl causes problems. Presumably if it is shortened to Allie or Lexi rather than Alex it is not a problem, and it is such a nice grand name for when a girl is grown up.

i am not so keen on lexy although sandy has grown on me since meeting a teen boy one

Thanks for the continued feedback. I do like the fact that there are Alexandras in every generation it seems, so the name shouldn't be a fad name that dates.

It's my name & it's the absolute bees-knees of a name, imo!

Didn't like being called Alex when I was a kid & wouldn't answer to it. I quite like Alex now. But never Sandy, or Lexy or any of those other cringe-worthy names. (apologies to any Sandys or Lexys out there!)

hester · 15/04/2009 22:09

I know an Alex, who is very happy to be Alex.

I am forcing the Alexandra issue a bit atm as i wish she would!

TabithaTwitchet · 15/04/2009 22:06

The one I know spells her nickname Alix.

MumHadEnough · 15/04/2009 12:17

I know a little girl called Alexandra, who is also known as Alexa, I think its a lovely name!

jellybeans · 15/04/2009 12:11

All the ones I know are known as Alex. It's a nice name. I like Lexie for short but it put me off as rhymes with sexy and was worried about playground names.

HolidaysQueen · 15/04/2009 09:57

My 3yo goddaughter is an Alexandra. Very definitely that as well - not yet shortened in any way. But she will probably get all variants as she starts school. Her parents picked it because it works in both of their native countries as well as English - it's one of relatively few 'universal' names.

Oh, and she is one of the Alexandras that Dizzy describes: very very definitely knows her own mind and lets everyone know!

Lori73 · 15/04/2009 09:49

DH's cousin is Alexandra. Her family have always called her this but as a teenager and at Uni she insisted all her friends call her Alex. Now in her late 20s she wishes they called her Alexandra but feels it's too late to insist they all change back. I do like the name a lot, but perhaps it's perceived as not feminine enough at the moment, as it's not all that popular in the rankings.

MrsJoeMcIntyre · 12/02/2009 13:38

My dd is Alexa. And we call her either Lexie or Alexa, and yes, she is also a 'Lexie Loon'.

Thanks for all your replies.
Really interesting to read the feedback so far!

I had a boy, but Alexandra was my girls name choice.

Was aiming for Alexandra on the birth certificate but Alex for every day use.

I love the idea of strong sounding girls names - hate all the feminine rubbish (worst examples Chole, Daisy and Sophie - know this will offend, but that's my view)

A young twenty something female Alex - cool - and taken seriously

Sallypuss · 09/02/2009 21:07

I too am an Alexandra and absolutely love my name - so much so that I've given it to my daughter as a middle name. I'm called Alex at work (which can really surprise people when a woman turns up for a meeting!) and my parents call me Alee which I love too. From experience the ambiguity of Alex usually works to my advantage (but it does annoy me when the generally dumb call me 'Alexander') I know so many people who don't like their name so feel really fortunate to have a name that's classic and unpretentious. Fab choice!

thats as may be Lizziemum but I also feel that all things dangerous coming with warnings attached and people should know what they're getting into!!!

lizziemun · 08/02/2009 15:16

Dizzy

ScorpiowithabigS · 08/02/2009 15:09

I love Lexie for a nn, and a name in its own right.

dizzyTHETARTANARMYdixies · 08/02/2009 15:05

if you ask her name she tells you 'I'm Lexie-baby!!!!'

good luck to us [meep]

jojosmaman · 08/02/2009 09:46

My first choice for a girls name is Alexandra, I have a good friend with this name who is a beautiful person inside and out and my best friend growing up was also Alex (Ali to her mum but always Alex to everyone else). Her boyfriend used to call her sexy lexy!

vesela · 08/02/2009 09:31

I don't know what my daughter thinks of Alexandra, because she's not quite 2. Her nickname is Aia, though, because that's how she pronounces it.

It's funny - if you ask her who she is, she says 'Aia!' (or Aia-dra now). If you ask her what her name is, though, she tells you her second name.

bestfriendswithbenefits · 08/02/2009 07:44

I'm Alexandra, always been known as Alex. When I was five, I thought my middle name was Andra! To be honest, I didn't much like having a unisex name when I was growing up, and hated it even more when sometimes I was called Alexander, often by a teacher or similar. It's not THAT an unusual name, surely intelligent people should be able to know the difference between the male and female versions? Anyhow, I really like my name now, being a female Alex is a little bit quirky, whilst still being a normal traditional name, which I like. I did, however, name my daughter after a flower, so obviously felt strong enough about growing up with a unisex name to not go down that route again.

Flightattendant12 · 08/02/2009 06:18

My oldest friend is Alexandra. She was my best mate when we were five

She's been Alex for a long time now, it used to have an exclamation mark afterwards when we were teens in the 80s

She's one of the cheeriest, nicest people I know.

AlexandraPeppernose · 08/02/2009 05:58

Its my name and I've hated it my whole life. I spent my primary school yrs being called Alexander and now I'm known as Allie I get called Alison the whole time.

I also think it depends where you live. When I was growing up it was just too posh for the area I grew up in.
