Barnaby - too posh? too babyish?

I like Oliver, dh likes Cameron, we both like Barnaby. Except is it too posh (we live in grotty part of a city and we'll send him to local comp and is it silly on an adult? I tried doing the Prime Minister and plumber test and I think a PM called Barnaby is fine but it sounds silly for a plumber.

I have to admit my DH wasnt keen on the name to start with but after I gave birth and DS was BIG just over 11lb, DH said I should call him whatever I wanted

callalilies · 06/02/2009 20:40

I like it. I know someone with a Barnaby and my initial thoughts were and 'bit poncey'.

But it has really really grown on me. I like your other choices as well.

firstontheway · 06/02/2009 20:36

Oh I love it!

I desperately wanted this baby to be a Barnaby and was catagorically told No by all I mentioned it too

(and baby is a girl now anyway!)

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 06/02/2009 17:32

I love the name Bruno and I was told 'no too bear' to that as well.

cedarsparrow · 06/02/2009 16:29

Are bears posh
I think it is a silly joke sort of name not posh at all.

MrsWeasley · 06/02/2009 16:14

I have a Barnaby its a cool name IMHO (he was named just before they launched Barnaby Bear!)

We don't call him Barney but some of his teachers do, he says he doesn't mind but he would be too shy/polite to say to them if he did!

janeite · 06/02/2009 16:10

It's gorgeous, as is Oliver. He can always be Barney if Barnaby feels too "posh". I don't like Cameron but did teach a lovely one many years ago!

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/02/2009 16:06

I'm just helping drive the local economy

PenelopePitstops · 06/02/2009 15:35

ace name!

would probably be a barney though which isn't at all posh

ShowOfHands · 06/02/2009 15:34

oh no, you don't have staff or anything...

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/02/2009 14:44

And I'm not posh. At least I don't think I am...

Themasterandmargaritas · 06/02/2009 14:42

I have a Barnaby, we call him by his full name but at school his friends call him Barns.

wotulookinat · 06/02/2009 14:19

Becky and Barnaby Bear.

lastboxoftampons · 06/02/2009 14:09

The only one I've known was an awful, insufferable, posh git - sorry!

I also think it's quite sinister - but again probably just based on this guy!

Tillyscoutsmum · 06/02/2009 14:08

SOH I love Atticus too. Not sure I could get away with a matching set though

I really like Barnaby. Its a lovely, classic name thats not (yet?) too common.

For a child, Barny, is cute, and as a teenager he can always call himself Barny or Barnes.

Also really like Atticus !!

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 06/02/2009 13:45

Barnabas could be Baz for short!! parents would love that!

MrsMattie · 06/02/2009 13:44

Both. It's a wet name. I'd pity a grown man called Barnaby/Barney.

Barnabas is just

ShowOfHands · 06/02/2009 13:43

Love it. Is my 2nd choice for a hypothetical ds.

TSM, we have such good taste don't we?

DH now concedes that Scout is lovely too (working on Atticus!).

Tillyscoutsmum · 06/02/2009 13:42

I love it. DD would have been Barnabus/Barnaby. I think Barney or Barnes passes the plumber test

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 06/02/2009 13:34

I prefer Barnabas, but that's even posher I'm afraid. I think Barnaby is just too bear at the moment, so I'd go with Barnabas or not at all.

Barney is ok tho'. I like that. Bart short for Bartholomew is along the same lines.

I like Jeremy, Gregory and Zachary too, all less posh than Barnaby.

What about Columba? (in same style as Barnabas!)

I have a Barnaby. My side of the family are quite poncetastic, DH's side are definately not. All the family call him Barney or Barnes, but my friends call him Barnaby. DH is very blokish, works with his hands, goes to all the home football matches and is a regular in the local pub. He had to make sure Barney/ Barnes would fit all those actvities and he is very pleased with the name. In fact it has only been my definately posh next door neighbour who said that Barnaby is a big name for a little chap!

diedandgonetodevon · 06/02/2009 10:41

I like it, but it is also the name of my sister's dog!
