Is Agatha hideous??!!

I love the name Agatha, it stirs up all sorts out fabulous Art Deco images for me and I imagine a daughter called Agatha to be all independence and intellect. However, every single person I've suggested this to has reacted either with a choked back giggle or a fingers down the throat look - is it my hormones? Is it truly hideous?!

My cleaner is called Agatha and it suits her but she is a very skinny polish thrash metal freak

Luvverly. Much nicer than some of the poncey names around right now. Like Amelie. Barf. It's nice and crisp and you won't sound pissed when you say it.

It's okay. I like the idea of it but the hard "g" is a bit unpleasant.

I like it. There is a child in my son's nursery called Agathe, which I also think is lovely.

Winnifred could be interesting. With Agnes, there is "Eve of st Agnes" but also that Cusk book to be thinking about....

Somebody who has an Agnes told me that something awful happened to St Agatha - hads one of her breasts chopped off or similar - so she chose Agnes rather than Agatha

I love Agatha, largely because I know a fantastic little Agatha.

We sing Aaaa--gaaa tha-tha-tha push pineapple grind coffee.. to her.

It's the "Ag" part of the name that I find off-putting when usually I love old lady names. Maybe because 'ag' words can be negative? Hag, sag, on the rag, old bag, skin-tag, nag, dag... (maybe just my thought-processes though, so ignore!)

Joan, Mary, Tamara, Dorothy, Winnifred, Anna, Margaret, Ruth, Helen are names I think of re the Art Deco era.

I'm not takign the mick, I like Gregory, Benedict, Leo, Dominic, Thaddeus... but SAINT hangs in the air before Agatha REALLY loudly in my ear.

I like it, but I also think it's a bit "trying to hard" - the sort of name annoying columnists in the Guardian Weekend give their kids. For that reason I would avoid it.
