Is Agatha hideous??!!

I love the name Agatha, it stirs up all sorts out fabulous Art Deco images for me and I imagine a daughter called Agatha to be all independence and intellect. However, every single person I've suggested this to has reacted either with a choked back giggle or a fingers down the throat look - is it my hormones? Is it truly hideous?!

No sorry I can't stop thinking about Bertie Wooster's Aunt Agatha either.

CountessDracula · 04/02/2009 11:08

My cleaner is called Agatha and it suits her but she is a very skinny polish thrash metal freak

jellybeans · 04/02/2009 10:55

yes it is abit too out there for me

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 03/02/2009 20:00

Opinion is divided, but its a 'no' from me, sorry!

BabyValentine · 03/02/2009 19:53

Lovely name. Was on my list for DD.

pointydog · 03/02/2009 19:44

yes, hideous

DoThisDoThat · 03/02/2009 19:36

Luvverly. Much nicer than some of the poncey names around right now. Like Amelie. Barf. It's nice and crisp and you won't sound pissed when you say it.

nkf · 03/02/2009 17:30

It's okay. I like the idea of it but the hard "g" is a bit unpleasant.

MrsMattie · 03/02/2009 17:28

I like it. There is a child in my son's nursery called Agathe, which I also think is lovely.

lou33 · 03/02/2009 17:27

i know a winnie who is about 15

Wankingguideauthor · 03/02/2009 14:14

Winnifred could be interesting. With Agnes, there is "Eve of st Agnes" but also that Cusk book to be thinking about....

lucysmum · 03/02/2009 13:57

Somebody who has an Agnes told me that something awful happened to St Agatha - hads one of her breasts chopped off or similar - so she chose Agnes rather than Agatha

specialmagiclady · 03/02/2009 13:56

I love Agatha, largely because I know a fantastic little Agatha.

We sing Aaaa--gaaa tha-tha-tha push pineapple grind coffee.. to her.

That may put you off.

Heated · 03/02/2009 13:45

It's the "Ag" part of the name that I find off-putting when usually I love old lady names. Maybe because 'ag' words can be negative? Hag, sag, on the rag, old bag, skin-tag, nag, dag... (maybe just my thought-processes though, so ignore!)

Joan, Mary, Tamara, Dorothy, Winnifred, Anna, Margaret, Ruth, Helen are names I think of re the Art Deco era.

daisy5 · 03/02/2009 13:39

I love the Nordic version - Agnete (Ag-net-a)

Lilyloo · 03/02/2009 13:38

Quite like it actually

IloveBrucie · 03/02/2009 13:29

Agatha is lovely, as is Agnes.

I also really like Agathe (A gat), beautiful

solo · 03/02/2009 12:51

Very hideous!

Amani · 03/02/2009 12:48

Yes

boccadellaverita · 03/02/2009 12:41

CarryOnUpTheLiffey - Yes, you could be right. I thought Professor of Medieval Literature and her offspring!

Gorionine · 03/02/2009 11:43

I like Agatha, , nice stong name!

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 03/02/2009 11:41

lol at Finbar and Agatha 20 years ago.

Posh catholics!

I'm not takign the mick, I like Gregory, Benedict, Leo, Dominic, Thaddeus... but SAINT hangs in the air before Agatha REALLY loudly in my ear.

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 03/02/2009 11:39

Yes. Hideous. Aggie isn't ncie. Although I like Maggie for some reason.

branflake81 · 03/02/2009 11:17

I like it, but I also think it's a bit "trying to hard" - the sort of name annoying columnists in the Guardian Weekend give their kids. For that reason I would avoid it.

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 02/02/2009 23:11

Lovely, I completely get your 1920s aesthetic
