Got a shortlist of four girls names and four boys names.
Saw a thread before which asked what pictures names conjured up so tell me a bit about the following people; are they fun, obnoxious, pretentious etc.

Any other suggestions welcome too.

Boys:

Aaron
Arthur
Lucas
Malachy

Girls:

Cara
Lucy
Marian
Zoe

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Aaron - wears a hoody and is a bit thick

Arthur - a bit of a mummy's boy

Lucas - wears trendy thick rimmed geek specs

Malachy - is from notorious family

Cara -looks like a potato (sorry)

Lucy -prefect at school

Marian -her legs go blotchey on the hockey pitch. They wouldn't if she was called Marianne.

Zoe -speaks really slowly in that west London posh girl way.

boccadellaverita · 30/01/2009 19:01

Aaron - Dad is a big Elvis fan. In later life, Aaron is an actor on Hollyoaks (2029 version).
Arthur - Tall and muscular. Future landscape gardener and captain of rugby.
Lucas - A sweet little boy, grows up to be an aromatherapist.
Malachy - Dark and brooding. Works as a postman to leave time for writing poetry, for which he wins awards but little money.

Cara - Her mother hopes she will become an opera singer but she opts for accountancy.
Lucy - Very sweet and girly, which is endearing until she is 10 but wearing after that.
Marian - Serious, capable and clever. As a teenager, doctors her birth certificate and passport so that she can present herself as Marianne.
Zoe - Clever but not interested in academia. Is captain of school hockey team and later runs her own riding stables.

SoMuchToBits · 30/01/2009 18:32

Aaron - slightly wild sort of chap, quite sporty.
Arthur - fat old man, who would use the car to go tot a shop 100 yards down the road.
Lucas - greasy hair and leather jacket.
Malachy - slightly sinister - you're never quite sure what he's thinking.

Cara - very quiet, careful sort of girl.
Lucy - bit sugary-sweet, prone to tears.
Marian - very studious and a bit frumpy.
Zoe - quite dynamic, fun but focussed.

Think this thread is great btw - far more useful and entertaining than your average name thread!

KatB · 30/01/2009 18:20

Aaron - The little boy at school that ate rubbers, a little overweight he has an arrogant side to him to compensate for bullying.

Arthur - An old man married to Pauline, salt of the earth wears knitted patterned jumpers.
Lucas - A handsome fella in a studious way, goes to university and marries an Annabel
Malachy - A loveable rogue, cheeky and handsome with it, clever but shuns conventional education in favour of entroprenarialism

Girls:

Cara - Studious, clever but fun-loving and a good friend.
Lucy - Cute and conventional, does what she is supposed to do, marries well and has 2.4 children and a house in surburbia
Marian - A librarian with an unattentive husband, she's very mumsy looking and dreams of doing something wild but would never have the guts to do it. her friend Marianne is beautiful and sexy, Marian can never live up to her
Zoe - Wild and a bit sexy, rebellious but not in a bad way. Gets what she wants and everyone likes her because she's such fun.

That was fun!

PuppyMonkey · 30/01/2009 16:58

CupaTeaJanice seems to have this covered imho... lol. Here goes...

Aaron - very religious.
Arthur - Fonzereli, from Happy Days.
Lucas - very fanciable
Malachy - lives in the Amish community.

Cara - bitch and a bully
Lucy - sporty and fun
Marian - old boring lady
Zoe - student.

Very good idea this btw!

paddingtonbore · 30/01/2009 16:42

Aaron: in training for a ASBO
Arthur: David Cameron's son. Nuff said
Lucas: Tall, bit scruffy, but not in a bad way. Likes tinkering with things
Malachy: grows hair long like Laurence Llewellyn Bowen. I think Byronesque is the word I'm looking for

Girls:

Cara: a stick in the mud, probably an over officious local goverment officer.
Lucy: Blonde, fluffy, has a lisp. Bit irritating but has a heart of gold.
Marian: Generic Mum
Zoe: Hair dyed interesting colours. Studies archaelogy at university.

LaDiDaDi · 30/01/2009 16:37

Boys:

Aaron, clever, likes computers and chemistry but NOT a geek.
Arthur, cool, surfs, looks scruffy and a bit retro.
Lucas, nice enough guy, one of the mainstream.
Malachy, tall, sporty but not a traditionally macho bloke, maybe likes hockey or basketball.

Girls:

Cara, pretty and sweet, uses it to get what she wants but doesn't alienate women.
Lucy, shy, unadventurous, desperate to break free and be cool.
Marian, very neat writing and tidy clothes, doesn't like getting messy.
Zoe, fun, lkes to do lots of activities, has lots of friends but no best friend.

Pollyanna · 30/01/2009 16:36

Malachy - Irish, fun-loving

Lucy - pretty, reliable, not too wild
Marian - mad as a box of frogs. Twas the name of the woman who stalked my FIL
Zoe - nice but dull

dustbuster · 30/01/2009 16:23

Also...So Long Marianne by Leonard Cohen is a great song!

TheFirstLiffey · 30/01/2009 16:22

I suggested Malachy and Clodagh to the x, as names that I felt would work perfectly well in the uk. Malachi is the spelling that looks weird to me.

I just hate the name Arthur. I will offend somebody on this board no doubt, but I would expect the parents of an Arthur to be smug wankers.

Can you be persuaded to consider Marianne instead of Marian? Marian is just so middle-aged. But Marianne makes me think of Jane Austen. Sounds like the sister of an Edith or a Flora.

purlease · 30/01/2009 16:18

TheFirstLiffey - I fancied 2 Malachys at University - both very different - one quite geeky and the other quite sporty.

If we do have a boy and call him Malachy, I'm sure my best friend will question my inspiration!

I'm finding the boys name easier than girls name - I think it's between Malachy and Arthur. For girls, may have to review the list.

Oops - sorry.

Love Forever Optimistic's:

Lucas - A bit of a "sod" at school. Organises festivals at uni then drops out because he wants to discover his spiritual side in India.

Spot on!

Funny how different names conjour up totally different images for different people.

dustbuster · 30/01/2009 16:15

Aaron - shaven headed 9 year old wearing an England shirt

Arthur - adorable tousle-headed Boden clad urchin

Lucas - precocious, hot-housed, pushy parents

Malachy - I keep thinking of the Malachai who was on a reality TV show years ago - he was from N.Ireland, played guitar and was very sweet (although he did do a cover of Fields of Gold)

Cara - ethereal, slightly precious
Lucy - a good sort, jolly hockey sticks, loves animals
Marian - I am also going with middle aged
Zoe - love it, I think Zoe can be anything you want it to be. I have a very dear friend called Zoe and she loves her name. You've got to have the diaresis though.

Aaron - A bit of a drip at school goes on to become a mechanic, still living at home when he is 25 because he likes his home comforts too much.

Arthur - Good all rounder at school. A jolly rotund chap with a good job in investment banking.

Lucas - A bit of a "sod" at school. Organises festivals at uni then drops out because he wants to discover his spiritual side in India.

Malachy - Football mad, a real boys boy. Spends too much time in the pub with his mates.

Cara - A sweet quiet girl. Blossoms into a very attractive woman, lives in Surrey, married to a stockbroker with 2 beautiful children.

Lucy - Top of the class, teachers pet. Works in Marketing, very bitchy.

Marian - Very old fashioned, mum won't let her wear high school musical clothes and she doesn't really fit in. Gets married to the first man she meets and has 5 children.

Zoe - Very popular at school does really well well in team sports and Art. Goes on to become a primary school teacher.

Purlease, I love the name Malachy, I know a few and they've always been cocky and good looking! I like the name, but feel it's 'too cool' for me!

dustbuster · 30/01/2009 16:08

ROFL CuppaTeaJanice - these are like short stories!

MrsSeanBean · 30/01/2009 16:07

This is such a good way to get a new perspective on names.

Bucharest · 30/01/2009 16:07

...am seriously snorting at these descriptions....they are so spot on....

CuppaTeaJanice · 30/01/2009 16:05

Aaron - 17 years old and already slept with 30+ girls. Shaved mousy hair. Tracksuit. Earring.

Arthur - 75 years old, ear hair, golfing jumper, wife called Margaret.

Lucas - long hair, slightly rubbery lips. Spits a bit when he talks. Wears chinos.

Malachy - full length leather trenchcoat, listens to HIM, Sisters of Mercy etc., wanders round ruined castles & churches at night. Owns a snake.

Cara - popular and pretty, not too bright. Wears very short skirts, but manages not to look tarty.

Lucy - Wants to be a vet. Wears a lot of red and tartan, has several siblings. Loves mainstream music, particularly James Blunt.

Marian - approaching 50, starting to get one of those big, square bottoms. Wears cropped trousers, likes Merrill Osmond (always thought Donny was over-rated).

Zoe - long blonde hair, quite petite. Member of the Girl Guides. Big fan of the X-Factor, and talent shows in general. Bedroom is pink and lilac, lives in a small house on a modern estate.

purlease · 30/01/2009 15:58

My comment about DH referred to the dots on Zoe.

Great descriptions everyone - much clearer than just 'like it' or 'hate it'.

Thank you

thefirstliffey Mum is Irish,Dad is English
