I've decided at the ripe old age of 30ish (ok, 38) that I'm gonna change my name.

Want something short (1 syllable, max. 2)

like Kathy but can't have that. Like Kim but dh doesn't.

Nothing beginning with A

Nothing wacky or made up, or too 'of an era' eg Tracey.

So, any ideas?

sorry gossip - was it this Q "So, at a party, you introduce yourself as Laura and in the same conversation DH says, 'Come here Myrtle, there is someone I want to introduce you too.'" OK, dh brought this exact senario up, and said grudgingly that due to this, he would also have to adopt the new name. I think he will, once I finally decide. Dunno if I'll bother with my mum - see her little enough for it not to matter, ditto rest of family.
Plus, my mum had her chance, and inflicted horrid name on me, so I are little for her opinion in this matter tbh.

Myrtle pmsl.

he thinks helen, I was supposed to be called helen but at the 11th hour my mum inflicted this name on me which puts me off Helen. Plus I don't actively like it, unlike Jenny/Jen/Jennifer or Laura.

I was put off Laura by the German pronunciation (was removed from list for dd), but soon that will no longer be applicable

oi! ernest - answer my question please!

MmeLindt · 03/02/2009 16:57

It is quite old fashioned and I remember being surprised as it was not the kind of name that I had thought you would have. I had envisioned you more of a Lisa or Karen , if you know what I mean.

Megan
Helen
Helena

ErnestTheBavarian · 03/02/2009 16:50

Oh, and no, am not Kathleen. Hm, mmeL, can't access that email account, - was my real name on there?
So at least you see it's awful? And old fogeyish and unattractive and horrible?

Lois or Kitty

sep1712 · 03/02/2009 16:05

Thanks carryonuptheliffey, i'm not that old!

MmeLindt · 03/02/2009 14:37

Hi Ernest! Just seen this thread. I had to go and look up your email (I still have it, it helped me through a difficult time) to see your name.

I like Laura better than Jenny, it sounds more elegant. It goes well with your surname too. I also like Anna.

If you would feel better about it, then go for it. You have done so much for your DH these last few years, with all the moving and uncertainty of where you are going to end up living. The least he could do is learn your new name.

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 03/02/2009 14:29

NO! Lisa too late 60s early 70s. Hasn't been used since.

sep1712 · 03/02/2009 14:24

I like jenny best.

Is kathleen your name now?

What about Lisa?

skay · 03/02/2009 14:20

I like Jenny, although I would go for the alternative spelling. Jenni.

Bumbleybee · 03/02/2009 14:01

Jenny is at the top for me, all Jennies I know are lovely people.

spongebrainbigpants · 03/02/2009 13:44

Oi liffey, watch what you bloody say about the name Clare - bloody cheek!

Shitemum · 03/02/2009 13:43

i think Jenny or Jenni does for any age

NorbertDentressangle · 03/02/2009 13:43

Ever since I first read this thread a couple of days ago its really been bugging me as to what Ernest's real name is (the clue "old lady name beginning with K" has been given but I still can't think what it must be)

Can I have another clue please Ernest(without giving the game away as I realise that you don't want to "out" yourself) ? I can't lose another nights sleep wondering about it

GossipMonger · 03/02/2009 13:39

Will your family go along with the new name as it sounds as if DH is a bit peed off about it?

So, at a party, you introduce yourself as Laura and in the same conversation DH says, 'Come here Myrtle, there is someone I want to introduce you too.'

Are you going to look foolish?

Just a wonderingment really.

Lilyloo · 03/02/2009 13:25

Hey Ernest how is dd?? and the boys ??

Wow you coming back to UK

I think it's a great time to change your name then , why not!

ErnestTheBavarian · 03/02/2009 13:16

hmmm Laura keeps coming up - is that coming out on top? I do like Jenny though..... asked dss 2 votes for Jenny, 1 vote for Laura & abstain from dh

If you have any welsh roots (or even if you don't) Sian is a nice, no nonsense but pretty one syllable name. Other good ones would be Anna, Laura or Rebecca (shortened to Becca or Becky)

TooFoggy · 03/02/2009 13:02

Nina is nice

I always wanted to be George (Famous Five)

Umlellala · 02/02/2009 17:36

(Am not Susan - am another S name ending in h. Maybe more 80s )

pureeandpearls · 02/02/2009 17:21

YOu could change your name to Ernest (puree- formerly makecakes, formerly flosspot!) And what will you change your MN name to when you return to Sutton/Surrey?!!

At least this time you are not pregnant and planning a move!!

PS- I like Laura.

TooFoggy · 02/02/2009 17:16

I agree re Suzannas, how funny!

Also like Anna and Helen. Really good strong names.

Its a fundamental thing to change and I can understand your husbands reluctance, take it slowly is my advice. Be gentle with him

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 02/02/2009 15:57

I vote for

Anna
Beth
Jenny

(all really unpretentious)

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 02/02/2009 15:56

I like Susan too, and although this is weird, I prefer it to Suzanne. Suzannes are annoying, Susans are not.

Clare is a bit dull. I'm 37 and I couldn't thow a stone without hitting a Clare/Claire.

I could say the same for Jenny but I prefer the name, it is an upbeat name. All Jennies I've known were pretty, friendly, normal approachable people.

I like Laura, but I think you are a teensy bit too old to be a Laura, sorry! The oldest Laura I know is 35.

Btw, I know a Helga who is about forty and it took me by surprise the first time I met her. SHe is slim, blonde, wears lovely clothes, has a house in Bermuda, 3 young children, not a Helga at all!!!

So if that's your name, you're not alone out there.
