I've decided at the ripe old age of 30ish (ok, 38) that I'm gonna change my name.

Want something short (1 syllable, max. 2)

like Kathy but can't have that. Like Kim but dh doesn't.

Nothing beginning with A

Nothing wacky or made up, or too 'of an era' eg Tracey.

So, any ideas?

I love the name Laura.

Shitemum · 05/02/2009 12:06

sorry, maybe it's just the Lauras I've known....
I know what it's like to have a difficult name, my foreign surname sounds like something sexual and I have been spelling it for people since I could talk. I also have a posh first name but am not posh myself, as you can probably tell.
Sorry for being rude, I hope you'll be very happy in your new incarnation as Laura.

MmeLindt · 05/02/2009 12:03

Ah, don't listen to her. Laura is a lovely name and not at all wet.

Don't take name advice from someone calles Shitemum

What did your DH say? Is he ok with Laura?

ErnestTheBavarian · 05/02/2009 12:01

did you really write that?

Ok, well, at 38, I don't feel too much need for nicknames.

But thanks for your constructive comments. Good to know I've had a shit name for 38 years, and I've now chosen a wet one, iyo!

Shitemum · 05/02/2009 11:58

hmm, glad you're happy with your choice but -i think Jenny would have given you more scope for nicknames and I think Laura is wet. Sorry!

pureeandpearls · 04/02/2009 21:28

Congratulations LauratheBavarian soon to be LauratheSurbiton-ian!!

I love Auntie RaRa- too sweet!

MmeLindt · 04/02/2009 21:08

I am glad that you decided on Laura, it is my favourite of the ones that you had on the shortlist.

Congratulations!

Are you having a renaming party?

Umlellala · 04/02/2009 19:57

My sister is Auntie Ra Ra too

Congrats - you won't regret it.

sep1712 · 04/02/2009 14:15

Great name, my friend laura gets shortened to auntie ra ra by godchildren.

DumbledoresGirl · 04/02/2009 12:30

Good choice.

Fimbo · 04/02/2009 12:17

Oh well done. Laura is lovely, it is my cousin's name.

I do know another one though that gets shortened to Loz

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 04/02/2009 12:12

congratulations, here's your song

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/02/2009 11:49

Ooh, that must be annoying dg

Well, until now Jenny was ahead, but have finally decided on Laura. Am excited.

DumbledoresGirl · 04/02/2009 11:44

Ernest, can I throw my tuppenceworth in at this late hour? I am a Jenny. Just a Jenny, it is not short for Jennifer. And I have spent my entire life (44 years) correcting people and documents time after time because people insist that I am stupid and don't understand that full name means full name so they change the correct "Jenny" to the incorrect "Jennifer".

So if you go for Jenny (and why not? I like it and I am delighted the consensus here is that Jennies are fun and lovely people) please be aware that you will come across officials and others, who think you are Jennifer and like to call you thus.

CarryOnUpTheLiffey · 04/02/2009 11:43

ooooh tell us what you've decided to be!?

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/02/2009 11:28

I have decided

Thanks for your help and interest and support

gagamama · 04/02/2009 10:59

If it's Helga, I'd go for Helen! I know that's not on your shortlist but every single Helen I've ever known has been utterly charming, lovely and intelligent. A fine name, and not doesn't sound too unlike Helga but still manages to be heaps better (if that's your name which I have decided it must be).

Ah, just think, 30 years down the line I'm sure there will hundreds of threads like this as some of the cutting-edge-named children named on this forum enter their third cringeworthy decade.

NorbertDentressangle · 04/02/2009 10:31

Oh where did I get the "K" thing from ?

Thanks Ernest -I'll re-read the thread.

FWIW I think you should go for it and change your name if thats what you want but no idea what you should change it to.

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/02/2009 10:24

well, it has been mentioned on this thread, and it doesn't begin with K (or C) if that helps. Will say no more.

OP posts:
NorbertDentressangle · 04/02/2009 09:44

I'm still trying to work it out but can't think of anything really awful beginning with a K

pureeandpearls · 04/02/2009 09:37

YOu realise once you've decided we expect, nay insist, you reveal your actual name to us....

ErnestTheBavarian · 04/02/2009 05:52

Umlellala "Surely, in party scenario you'd just not say anything unless the other person looked confused then say 'oh, my dh calls me that!' (the truth, though you could pretend it was an in-joke)" not for off - my name is a total joke, so that would work

No middle name

Ali, can't believe you're 2 minutes up the road from where we're gonna be - pray the snow behaves itself, as I'm supposed to be coming this weekend to explore and check out areas to move to. Maybe you can give me your tuppence worth about Sutton sometime?

Stuck bwn Jen & LAura. I guess Laura is just LAura - no shortenings, whereas Jennifer has the scope to be Jenny, or Jen (most people shorten my current name, even tho I don't like any of the shortnings. Oh, and dh has known me since I was 14, so I guess he kinda got used to my name. I'm at the flip a coin stage I think.

Umlellala · 03/02/2009 19:46

We call my sis Jen (both sisters are in 20s btw)

Surely, in party scenario you'd just not say anything unless the other person looked confused then say 'oh, my dh calls me that!' (the truth, though you could pretend it was an in-joke)

GossipMonger · 03/02/2009 19:28

Maybe Jenny Myrtle is a winner

Laura Myrtle

Laura Jennifer

Do you have a middle name??

goingtohaveagoodnightssleep · 03/02/2009 17:09

I like the name Myrtle!

Laura is a really nice name and does sound elegant. I've known a few Jenny's and they've all been really nice.
