I think she is joking sort of but she was really vile to me today in front of a few of our relatives and said well if you call her that she will not be coming to my house and I'm taking back the outfit I bought her,she made herself look stupid tbh because everyone looked at her like she was a loon.

I haven't even decided on it but we really like he Violet but want the middle names Elsie Grace (yes I know they spell out VEG) but we wont really use Elsie it is just down to the fact that my Grandma has around 18 GC and GGC and noone has used her name and I do think it is a pretty name .

She has no issues with Grandma so thats not it just the fact she is a control freak and wanted me to call the baby Daisy .

Is it a really vile name it's not is it and I realise her initals spell out Veg I suppose I could find another name rather than Grace .

I am not ignoring any replies BTW just going for a quick bath.

I really liked Violet for our dd, but someone told me it reminded them of that vile character in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' which immediately put me off it.

I love the name and the VEG thing would not bother me. She will have a surname and so her initials will be VEGP or something.

My DS's initials are CAN but it never bothered me (apart from Dad calling him "my wee tin can" which I stopped him doing).

Why all the fuss about initials at the moment?

Oh, and your Mum is a loon.

MadameCastafiore · 26/01/2009 14:08

Ooooohhh can just imagine your child being called Vi across the playground - she will be mistaken for a blue rinsed dinner lady!

minouminou · 26/01/2009 14:06

Oh for god's sake - she's just embarrassed herself.
Use the name, she'll get used to it and will just hope that no-one remembers her outburst.

worriedmum09 · 26/01/2009 13:56

Hahahah good job I decided against posting my thread with my name change now isn't it lol .

worriedmum09 · 26/01/2009 13:36

I think I have settled on Violet Elsie Lydia , my mum has only rung once to ask if I had seen my brother didn't mention the baby .

alicecrail · 26/01/2009 13:34

Mad! My dh's grandad told us daisy (dd's name) was common, could we please change it!?? I think violet is lovely. Could you perhaps just change the order of the names so it doesn't spell veg? Our surname is double barrelled E-E so we couldn't have any p names or w names (pee or wee, can you imagine? kids are so cruel!)

maidinamerica · 26/01/2009 13:30

We've told all Mothers and Fathers - who all have different opinions - that we're going to name our dd 'Iphigenia Euphemia Primula' adding 'after the cheese spread'. They're so gobsmacked and not quite sure that we're joking that they haven't offered their opinions and will be quite relived when 'Isobel' arrives.

Love Violet Grace anything. Tell your Mum that you're really hurt by her behaviour. It's a priveldge to be allowed to share anything of your daughter's life and she needs to remember her role is to support you. In your choices.

MouseMate · 26/01/2009 13:28

Iklboo, my DB and DSIL did that to my mum - told her they were having Chelsea Charly Tuesday whenever she asked about names. Soon stopped her lol.

Comewhine..., just tell your mam that if she wants to use the name Daisy she can, when SHE has another child. Until then, YOU are chosing YOUR childs name

duchesse · 26/01/2009 13:21

She's a control freak. Of course you will name the baby, not her! I think they are lovely names fwiw.

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 26/01/2009 13:21

Tell her you have changed your mind and you are going to call the baby Fairy-Tinkerbell Dances-In-Moonlight.

She will then be relieved when you 'change your mind' back to Violet Elsie Grace.

Iklboo · 26/01/2009 13:16

Tell her you've changed your mind and are now set on Chlamydia Chardonnay Cruella.

TooFoggy · 26/01/2009 13:12

Violet Elsie Lydia
perfect

LilRedWG · 26/01/2009 13:07

Crazy lady (your mother that is).

Call your baby the name you like - ignore her. I bet she won't ignore you or the baby at all.

We have friends who bowed down to the M/MIL re: names. The poor husband was mowed down by his MIL.

Frasersmum123 · 26/01/2009 13:04

I liked the name Jessie for a boy for DS1 and everyone laughed at it, saying he would be a pansy. I didnt choose then name but my Step-dad said that he wouldnt use the name, and would call him Bill instead.

I love Violet and I dont think you should listen. I also think Violet Elsie Lydia is really nice. I wanted Niamh Olivia for our DD but as our surname begins with B i didnt want her to be NOB

Flibbertyjibbet · 26/01/2009 12:46

So they were looking at her like she was a loon eh?

Sounds about right.

You call your baby whatever you like. Daisy, no no no no no no.

basementbear · 26/01/2009 12:46

I think it's a beautiful name and I wouldn't worry about the VEG bit either - how often does anyone ever really spell out their initials? I hate my middle name so I always leave it out when asked to fill out forms.

Sorry your mum is being stupid - stick to your guns and go with the names you love.

TheFirstLiffey · 26/01/2009 12:39

Tell her that it's more important that your generation like the name than her generation.

My mum was like this too... She suggested names like Melanie and Claire, which are nice names I suppose but she was stuck on a list from 40 yrs ago I think!

georgimama · 26/01/2009 11:28

Obviously you didn't ask for opinions on names but not personally keen on Violet either, but guess what? It's none of my business and it's none of your mother's either.

She sounds mad.

yellowflowers · 26/01/2009 11:18

I would never tell my mum the name in advance. Do what you want and if your mum wants to miss out on her grandchildren then that's her problem

Lizzylou · 25/01/2009 19:23

My MOm spent weeks, obv
