Still TTC No. 2 at the moment. Girls names are impossible, but for a boy I am liking:

Cyrus
Tyrone
Oshian (Oshi for short)
Oren
Keir
Lukas
Amies
Bryn

DP is stuggling with all except Bryn (which is probably my least favourite) - we need a Welsh element so it may become the middle name.

millenniumfalcon · 21/01/2009 18:35

every welsh osian i know pronounces it with a short o lowri- btw how do you pronounce lowri?

Hulababy · 21/01/2009 17:50

I am not keen on any of the boy's names, sorry.

If I had to chose one - Lukas - but prefer it spelt with a c (Lucas)

lowrib · 21/01/2009 17:40

nappyaddict that's a great site

lowrib · 21/01/2009 17:39

Ok, it's

Oisín - Irish (pronounced O-sheen)
Osian - Welsh (Pronounced O-shan) (Long O)
Ossian - Scottish (Pronounced Osh-ian)

Oshian - think this is a made up version to help the ignorant English pronounce it!!

They are all versions of the same name.

Yes, you will have to spell it out, but I think this shouldn;t be a reason not to go for a name you love. There are a whole load of beautiful Celtic names (for example) with unusual (i.e. not English) spellings, which would die out completely if people didn't use them, which would be a great shame.

I have had to spell my surname out all my life, and it doesn't bother me at all!

lowrib · 21/01/2009 17:23

Oh people can be so boring!! Don't listen to the nay sayers, your choices are great.

Personally I love Oshian, but then I'm biased my DS (4 weeks old) is Ossian - the same name, although we pronounce it Osh-ian (Ossian is another 'proper' spelling!).

We've had loads of compliments on his name from people in RL, and there's a great story behind the name. Here's one version

I also like
Oren
Keir
Lukas
Bryn
Amez

Fennel · 21/01/2009 17:12

I know a little boy Oisin (I think it's spelt that way). I like it.

sausagenmash · 21/01/2009 17:10

My Dad is called Hywel and my brother's second name is Elwyn. Bless 'em...

nappyaddict · 21/01/2009 17:02

More welsh names;

Steffan, Evan, Owain, Aled, Cai, Iwan.

this site is good for pronunciation of welsh names. Some of them can be quite hard to say without a welsh accent so you might want to avoid those.

nappyaddict · 21/01/2009 16:55

Ah yes sorry Oisin which I was thinking of is Irish. If you want a Welsh name go for Osian.

Ceri is a nice Welsh name too.

owain is nice (oh-wine)

millenniumfalcon · 21/01/2009 16:47

yep welsh name is spelled osian and prn with a short "o" osh-ann.

mejon · 21/01/2009 16:44

Only really like Oshian but I think the usual Welsh spelling is Osian.

Oren - no - I'm afraid that oren is Welsh for orange.

Bryn is OK but a bit 'middle-aged-man-ish' (never heard it used for a girl though!) What about Gwyn or Gwyndaf (pr. Gwyndav) - you could then have Gwyn or Daf (Dav) as a petname?

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 16:33

Sorry for being facetiosus before. If I think about it I actually rather like some of them.

Oshian and Oren sound much nicer than they look.

Lukas is quite nice as well.

nappyaddict · 21/01/2009 16:27

How about Amos, Amie, Amis or Amiel? There's Ames but it is pronounced like James without the J.

Petrovia · 21/01/2009 16:18

Man you gotta have a girl. Sorry

Are those really all names?

It looks like a list of words you can make from one long one. We had to do that with Nebuchadnezzzar one time.

I got 44 words but they had run out of prizes

LaDiDaDi · 21/01/2009 16:16

I like Oren and Lucas spelt with a c.

I think that Cyrus is ok and I really dislike Tyrone.

nappyaddict · 21/01/2009 16:14

I like Bryn, Cyrus and Lukas. Lukas is the german/scandinavian version though. Would the english spelling of Lucas not be better?

Again spell it properly - It is pronounced Osh-een and spelt Oisin.

Oren means pine tree in Hebrew.

Keir doesn't sound finished to me iyswim.

Never heard of Amies sorry.

Don't like Tyrone at all. Sounds a bit yobbish to me (sorry to anyone who has a child called this)

Lionstar · 21/01/2009 16:10

I did ask - and now am judged, I'm trying too hard! What about if I just like the sound of those names though?

Not quite sure what you mean by cultural Custardo - mostly they are names I just like. Oshian and Bryn (and maybe Oren) have a Welsh background which is kind of cultural for me.

LightShines, I would pronounce Oshian as O-shan (with a long o sound as in orange). Amies is A-mez and Oren as O-ren (with the same long o sound as before)

GossipMonger · 21/01/2009 16:06

Cyrus - trying far too hard to be different and he just might not be 'cool' enough to pull it off!

Tyrone - NO

Oshian (Oshi for short)- NO

Oren - NO

Keir- NO

Lukas - OK if it is spelt properly ie Lucas. There is a LOUKAS in my school and I just know it is because his parents couldnt spell properly!

Amies- NO

Bryn - Uncle Bryn from Gavin and Stacey played by Rob Brydon. Not keen really.

None of these are my choice either but what about

Keiran
Levi
Malachi
Logan
Kyle
Kai
Owen

RhinestoneCowgirl · 21/01/2009 16:06

I like Kier as in Hardy (but then my bro is named after Clement Atlee!), others not so much, poss Lukas.

Cyrus really makes me think of Billy Ray sorry...

ScattyStudent · 21/01/2009 16:01

oh Lukas is lovely!

mollyroger · 21/01/2009 16:01

I have heard of two Orrins recently, so that is growing on me. Never heard of Oren.
I know a very lovely Bryn.
Kier is great, and less 'popular' than Kieran.

Don't really like the others, sorry.

Tortington · 21/01/2009 15:58

Cyrus - billy ray
Tyrone cultural?
Oshian (Oshi for short) - is this a cultural thing i am missing?

Oren - cultural?
Keir hardy - first labour leader - nowt wrong with that

Lukas - with a 'c' or else its wrong and you look either desperate for attention or dyslexic or ill educated

Amies - what now? is this cultural

Bryn - nowt wrong with bryn

its all very try hard

Poppycake · 21/01/2009 15:55

are you German too (wanting Lukas rather than Lucas)?

I think Bryn is nice. My Dad's a Brynmor (the bigger the better!). There are lots of nice names for Welsh boys, tho I think less so for girls.
