What do you think? I think it is really pretty but does it sound too much like the disease M.E.?

Agree seeker.

When I saw it I thought, Emmy or Emm??

One good rule wrt names is: Is it immediately obvious how you say it? In this case no.

seeker · 19/01/2009 22:25

People will think it's a typo for Emma. Why make life difficult for your child? Call her Emily or Emmeline and shorten it to Emmy. But no-one, and I mean no-one will know that Emme should be pronounces Emmy. Why should they? In English Emme woould be pronounced Emm.

missymoo2411 · 19/01/2009 21:01

my friends dd who is 8 is called emmeline or emmie

sonniebonnie · 18/01/2009 21:53

I would spell it Emmy or Emmie. Spellt as Emme it sounds like Em-meh to me...

thirtysomething · 18/01/2009 21:35

isn't it short for Emily? lovely name IMO

RachePache · 18/01/2009 21:32

I know an Eme pronounced Emmy

Also know a baby Emmeline. Everyone, bar none, mishears it as Emily the first time.

TheFallenMadonna · 18/01/2009 21:12

Not sure it is phonetic, is it? More common in English not to separate the 'm's. I would probably have gone for Em as a first bash at pronunciation.

Katecat · 18/01/2009 21:10

I like, very pretty. Would maybe spell it Emmie or Emmy though.

Buda · 18/01/2009 20:50

I get you Wilki. I suppose it sounds ok to me here surrounded by all sorts! Attila? Edit?

Actually - now I think of it, it wasn't Esme. It was Emse (I think) - pronounced Em-eh-shay = I like the pronounciation but appreciate it may not work in UK!

Wilkiepedia · 18/01/2009 20:47

Hmmm, thinking Emme not for me...

If you put an accent over the second E, then esmee would be prouncounced Es-may correctly.

Emme is a made up name BTW

yemmaly · 18/01/2009 20:43

made up looking sleb name

Busa - see Esme (Ez-may) is a classic example of a name I hate. I traditionally pronounced it is Ez-mee which is beautiful but Ez-may just sounds like someone trying to be exotic and failing (IMO)

I think the other twin is called Max

I live in Budapest and a teaching assistant at DS's school is called Esme (Ez-may) which is similar. Like both of them in fact. Emme is pretty but I wonder if it is a bit wishy-washy.

Thornyroses · 18/01/2009 20:38

I dont like it, sounds like a nickname. What did she call the other twin?

Wilkiepedia · 18/01/2009 20:38

Or would it sound like one of those stupid made up names/spellings which I hate, loathe and detest...??

OP posts:
Wilkiepedia · 18/01/2009 20:37

TheFallenMadonna - surely Em-ee (phonetic), Emi and Emmy are all the same sounding?

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 18/01/2009 20:36

See, that wouldn't have been my first attempt

Emmy more obvious.

Wilkiepedia · 18/01/2009 20:35

This could be a totally moot point anyway, it could be a boy (19 weeks pg - find out at scan hopefully)...!

OP posts:
Wilkiepedia · 18/01/2009 20:34

Em-ee

I'm not totally sure one it - we have picked another name that we both totally adore but this was just a pondering really...

I love Emmeline, and Emme is gorgeous too.

Lilyloo · 18/01/2009 20:34

Said Emi ?

I think it's nice

TheFallenMadonna · 18/01/2009 20:32

How would you say it?

MrsMattie · 18/01/2009 20:32

sorry, typo - I know its Emme. Still think its odd. Emmy is better, but only as a nickname.
