What do you think of Berenice?

I have an aversion to cute name and most of the granny chic names!

Have been looking for ages for a grown up name which has a regal quality but is unusual which rules out Victoria, Elizabeth etc.

So suddenly found the name Berenice, think it might be perfect but would love feedback as worried I might be horribly wrong!

LOL dearprudence

dearprudence · 12/01/2009 23:47

Oh, I got carried away .

I should have said that despite all that, I quite like the name except I've never been sure how to pronounce it.

dearprudence · 12/01/2009 23:46

Tidey - just what I was going to say! She was Ace's American girlfriend in Prudence. Or should that be Ace's 'permanent commitment'. She made macrobiotic carrot cake for a kids party and they all called it crap and chucked it around. And then Sevenoaks ate her Hermes belt and sicked it up all over the stairs.

EyeballsintheSky · 12/01/2009 23:44

I went to school with a girl called Bernisi and yes, Irish Catholic!

There's a very unpleasant character in a Jilly Cooper book called Berenice. That's what it immediately reminded me of.

TequilaMockinBird · 12/01/2009 23:36

I used to work with a Berenice (pronounced Berre-neece) and she was lovely

FAQtothefuture · 12/01/2009 23:36

sorry first thing I thougut when I saw the thread title was

"very nice" (berry-nice)

I am afraid the few hearers who get the Racine/Emperor Titus association are going to be lost in the crowd of those who have no idea what is going on, no idea how to pronounce it, but think it must probably be chavvy because most out-of-the-way names are in their perception.

really dont like it

Sesi · 12/01/2009 22:12

Flip, this is getting worse lol.

You have a perception of a name ? which to me is this dignified, Irish, vaguely middle aged name (therefore hopefully side stepping the granny chic craze). With the added literary association of the Jean Racine play.

But then find out a lot of people?s perception are it?s quite chavvy or Nolan sister or big hair. Glad I asked!

Really not keen, could be Chav or dour, depending on parentage and the way it was shouted across the soft play centre.

"Bereneeeeeice" (could be a bit Chardonnay)

DaisyMooSteiner · 12/01/2009 21:57

Bunty for short?

Okayyy. Mostly negatives. Might of got this wrong. Does no one see it as regal?

I worried it was veering towards a dour, irish nun type of name like changer22 said.

Wasn't expecting big, hair and lipstick {shock}

I was pronoucing it Beren-neece.

When I was in the youth orchestra (a long time ago!) a male friend of mine had a girlfriend called Berenice. She was always referred to as "Hairy-knees". This put me off the name somewhat.

listenglisten · 12/01/2009 21:30

I know it from the title of a piece of work by German artist Anselm Kiefer.

changer22 · 12/01/2009 21:30

Irish catholic?

tattycoram · 12/01/2009 21:28
