I've just received a text to tell me that a friend (of sorts!) has called her poor baby Sloane Anais....WTF??? Am I missing something here or does everyone else agree this is just awful?

Thank you Forever..

ForeverOptimistic · 09/01/2009 11:15

Madeleine and Esme are lovely names. Very pretty.

seeker · 09/01/2009 11:14

I think it's about time for me to post my "Things to think about before choosing a name" advice again!

PuppyMonkey · 09/01/2009 11:11

Well, it IS an awful name, that's just empirical fact...

Not as bad as Octavia (on another thread today).

In the spirit of fairness, I shall tell you that my dds are called Madeleine and Esme, so do feel free to take the piss out of my choices too.

castille · 09/01/2009 11:11

I came across a French girl called Sloane recently, pronouced Slow-Anne

ForeverOptimistic · 09/01/2009 11:10

It sounds as if they are trying to be "hip" and different. It actually sounds like a very silly name. Hopefully they will use the middle name day to day.

MrsMattie · 09/01/2009 11:09

...with a name like Sloane she had better get used to the piss taking!

Lilyloo · 09/01/2009 11:06

Surely it's different if a parent posts what do you think of these names as they are openly asking for opinion! Henec baby naming thread!
This thread is in no way 'helpful' as the parents have already chosen the name , not asked for opinion and Cilit has posted it on here basically for people to take the p##s!!

beanieb · 09/01/2009 10:59

I like it. It's different. Why 'poor child' ?

is it because all your children will be growing up thinking it's ok to take the piss because it can't possibly be their fault if they do as it's so much easier to blame the parents of teh 'poor child' ?

Sigh!

MrsMattie · 09/01/2009 10:58

What the heck is the point of a Baby Names forum if people can't post their frank opinions on names? Of course it gets bitchy sometimes, because sometimes there is just no nice way of saying 'That name is horrible'.

FGS, grow a set or naff off to another thread.

(And don't call your kid Sloane unless you have thick skin!)

ReginaFelange · 09/01/2009 10:31

I don't see the problem with the name. Every person has different opinions.

I could post OMG who could call their child Graeme (disclaimer I have no thoughts on this name either way) and somebody could love that name. Pathetically rude to comment in such a way.

shangelcharlie · 09/01/2009 10:15

It's not bullying it's expressing opinions about the name only why some people take it personally is beyond me.
The truth is helpful actually.
Sloane is a silly and somewhat aspirational name. Can't believe someone would willingly label their child a Sloane.

MrsDoylesMole · 09/01/2009 10:13

Everybody likes different names or has negative associations with a name.I hear of people calling their children very conservative names and shudder but that it their choice and as a rule even if i dislike a name it usually suits the child.

edam · 09/01/2009 10:12

Anais is fine, it's a real name. (Although I hope they remember the umlaut - I just don't know how to do it here).

But Sloane? As a first name? WTF? It's a SURNAME. Hence Sloane Square in Chelsea. And a term for posh girls. I do think people are entitled to raise their eyebrows at such a bizarre choice.

violethill · 09/01/2009 10:09

But she's right isn;t she, and we all know it, even if you won't admit it!!

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 09:43

I like Anais. Sloane is dreadful.

nailpolish · 09/01/2009 09:40

cilit, tell us your childrens names and we can all have a good bitch about them, see how you feel

mysterymoniker · 09/01/2009 09:38

with or without the umlaut?

sounds like a fab posh totty character in a Curtis Sittenfeld novel

Bluestocking · 09/01/2009 09:37

D'oh - mean correctly pronounced, as in An-ay-ees. Am stupid myself (but have sensible name).

Bluestocking · 09/01/2009 09:36

Anais is OK if it's correctly spelt. Sloane is just stupid.

ILiketoMarmiteMarmite · 09/01/2009 09:34

Neither name is exactly unheard of and it's a mean spirited thread.

cilitbang · 09/01/2009 09:29

Oh god....yawn yawn, is life that serious?? It was only a lighthearted joke. Of course its the parents choice, any 'unique' names are going to be open to a fair bit of critism....or should we all lie and say "what a beautiful name". Everyone is entitled to an opinion, I have no doubt that people have questioned our choice of names for our children, but who gives a ? its our (the parents)choice. The reason why its so funny is that the person in question would have bitch about everyone's name choices, without a doubt. TBH I like the second name,(apart from if you pronounce it as its spelt) its the first one I just think is a bit 'out there', I'd never heard it before, ever.

Her child, her taste, her choice.

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 08/01/2009 22:00

Oh, you guys are far too kind and considerate. I feel horrible now.

(sorry Lil, don't think I've laughed at your name choices but I clearly have laughed at others)
