I've just received a text to tell me that a friend (of sorts!) has called her poor baby Sloane Anais....WTF??? Am I missing something here or does everyone else agree this is just awful?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
RachieB · 09/01/2009 14:21

Anais is lovely ....... Sloane?!! wtf?!

HelenBurns · 09/01/2009 12:10

Actually I find it much harder to type in caps. I have to keep turning off the blardy thing to do punctuation.

Or is there a way round that? Otherwise I can't see how it's easier?

LiffeyMummyPig · 09/01/2009 12:09

It is Anne-EYE-uss.

tiktok · 09/01/2009 12:08

Kelly - email.about.com/cs/netiquettetips/qt/et020801.htm is a webpage that explains the posting-in-caps issue...it's just not 'done', and for good reasons. This has been the accepted 'rule' since the internet began, I think.

It's a bit like going into a party where people are talking, and YELLING at the top of your voice. You may not mean any harm by it, but unless you have a hearing/voicebox problem which you can't help, people will be put off and hear the YELL rather than the words.

If you then get all prickly when people ask you to speak in a normal voice, then they're entitled to get a wee bit tetchy - don't you think?

Anyway, if you read the link it will be a bit clearer.

advocateofthedevil · 09/01/2009 12:08

What is the correct pronunciation of Anais though?

advocateofthedevil · 09/01/2009 12:08

on pretty much any forum, caps are considered SHOUTING. it is rude to do it.

LiffeyMummyPig · 09/01/2009 12:07

Excellent thread,

WOULD ANYBODY LIKE A VALIUM?????????? [GRIN]

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 12:04

OH...BEFORE I GO.
HELEN HONEY? WHEN YOU WANT TO SHOUT...LET RIP LUV & LET 'EM KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.
YOU DON'T NEED CAPS TO DO THAT.
X

LiffeyMummyPig · 09/01/2009 12:03

Is she American? I just to see this on American boards. Obviously it is dreadful.

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 12:01

AAH,BEANIE..WHEN WAS I AGGRESSIVE BEFORE I WAS GETTING TOLD HOW TO BEHAVE? HIPPI? WHAT RULES?
YOU HAVE RULES THAT FORBID UPPER-CASE? CRIKEY! I'M HEADING FOR THE NEAREST COMFY CORNER...

HelenBurns · 09/01/2009 11:59

There are quite a few of us on here with four, five, one person has nine

You might find some more friends in the larger families section! It's on the topic list.

Of course people try hard to read your actual words. We're generally a nice bunch.

It's just harder to switch your eye muscles into reading caps, so many people will just gloss over the post instead of bothering.

It'd be easier for all of us to type in caps tbh, but we don't, because we want everyone else to be able to read what we write without making a huge effort.

It's just our way of being polite, you'll find it on most forums like this.

Also what are we meant to do when we really want to shout?!

hippipotami · 09/01/2009 11:52

Goodness me Kelly, you cannot join a forum and expect people to understand if you start breaking the rules...
Other people don't like reading caps. Switching case does not take any longer, because when you do a capital at the start of a sentence you press teh up-arrow key at teh same time as the letter you want capitalised, so no time wasted or lost! (Unless you are a one-fingered poster in which case it could be a bit different)

Typing in caps implies shouting on all forums I have been on. It is just the way it is!

Incidentally (the reason I came here) Sloane Anais both not bad separately, but not sure about them together...

beanieb · 09/01/2009 11:52

"ISN'T IT MY WORDS & SENTENCES THAT PEOPLE READ & INTERPRET?
SURELY,IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE HOW I TYPE."

fair enough - you may well have a need to type in Caps but what you say is also aggressive

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 11:51

CHRIST BEANIE...WHO AM I TO DICTATE TO EVERYONE ELSE HOW TO TYPE?
THAT'S NOT MY RIGHT.
SURE,IT TAKES ME A WHILE TO READ & RESPOND...AS I'M SURE YOU CAN SEE...BUT,I WOULDN'T EXPECT THAT OF PEOPLE.

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 11:49

LOL! HELEN LUV...YOU'RE ABOUT THE 3RD.
I JUST FIND IT STRANGE THAT PEOPLE TAKE SUCH OFFENCE.
ISN'T IT MY WORDS & SENTENCES THAT PEOPLE READ & INTERPRET?
SURELY,IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE HOW I TYPE.
HEY,IT'S LIKE WHEN YOU HAVE A BABY & YOU CAN BARELY STAND FROM LACK OF SLEEP.
(IN A VERY SWEET VOICE,) YOU SAY "NOW,GO TO SLEEP OR MUMMY WILL HAVE TO WRING YOUR NECK & THROW YOU OUT OF THE WINDOW,BABY"
...OH LORD..JUST OPENED MYSELF UP FOR MORE THERE I SUPPOSE...BUT,YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN?

beanieb · 09/01/2009 11:49

and Kelly - you had a different reason for your use of caps in another thread when you said (excuse the caps I copied the post) "I USE CAPS BECAUSE IT TAKES A LOT LESS TIME THAN SWITCHING CASE CONSTANTLY,(MY TIME IS LIMITED.)"

please don't get offended but I really think it's wise to take on board other people's advice about the etiquette expected on a forum if you are a new member. It's only polite to do so.

HelenBurns · 09/01/2009 11:47

Thanks Kelly.
I honestly didn't mean to imply you were actually thick. Really. I read your posts and thought, 'she sounds pretty bright, I'll risk a silly joke' and thought you would probably know I was only teasing.

Sorry it went a bit off. I don't always judge these things right.

You don't sound thick. Bit rude maybe

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 09/01/2009 11:45

Kelly MG - I am really surprised that you are insisting on sticking to your guns. It has been pointed out that its considered impolite to 'shout' but you won't back down.

Lets stop this. Its all really ugly

(walks away)

nailpolish · 09/01/2009 11:45

um ok then...

i will be avoiding threads you are on cos caps give me a headache

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 11:45

I WASN'T TRYING TO MAKE FRIENDS HELEN.
NO OFFENCE.
I INITIALLY CAME HERE FOR INFORMATION FOR A PROBLEM THAT I AM HAVING & SAW SOME THREADS THAT I HAD AN INTEREST IN.

beanieb · 09/01/2009 11:45

no offence Kelly but if it's easier for you to use caps wouldn't it make more sense to ask everyone else to write in caps. It's not easier to type in caps, it's exactly the same as typing in lower case (the keys are in the same place).

No one should have implied you are thick of course but I think calling someone a bitch is worse.

Go ahead and use caps if you like but I think it's the language you use and attitude you are displaying which is upsetting people more.

Maybe you should take a littel of your own advice and step back and go and have a coffee yourself, so you can chill a bit and then return?

HelenBurns · 09/01/2009 11:44

You just might find that other people interpret your caps as shouting when you are not shouting.

People are very attuned to the subtleties of how you write on here.

I wanted to warn you so that you didn't get into fights by accident but it appears to be too late for that.

KELLYMG · 09/01/2009 11:43

I THOUGHT THAT I HAD EXPLAINED THAT BY SAYING THAT IT IS EASIER FOR ME TO READ CAPS?
I DO NOT LIKE MAKING MISTAKES IN MY POSTING.
IT MAKES IT EASIER FOR ME TO CHECK.
THAT IS ALL.
