I've just received a text to tell me that a friend (of sorts!) has called her poor baby Sloane Anais....WTF??? Am I missing something here or does everyone else agree this is just awful?

Anais is pronounced An-ay-ees or An-ah-ees, not Anne-EYE-uss. And I don't think there was ever a TV campaign for the perfume, which was probably why it was universally and wrongly known as "Annay Annay".

lunamoon2 · 10/01/2009 23:09

I don't like Sloane.
Thought Anais was ok but I must have been mispronouncing it! I blame the perfume which I feel sure cacheral pronounced as An-ay, An-ay. Not Anne eye uus, Anne eye uus.

Miggsie · 10/01/2009 17:44

I saw a child named "Mocha" has joined DD's class.
I have no idea whether this is a boy or girl

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 10/01/2009 17:43

I'm back now the shouting has died down. Was not keen on Sloane, but am more impressed now that I have heard it is an old Irish name (thisisyesterday) - i don't care for what i call 'made up' names. Like Petula, its a made up name - Petula Clark's dad made it up for her.

HelenBurns · 10/01/2009 06:41

Lol at Shouty Kelly. I think she should change her name actually.

(might get shouted at again)

paolosgirl · 10/01/2009 00:06

I was referring (very cheekily) to SHOUTY KELLY who kept referring to people as honey and luv - although I kind of got the feeling that she didn't really luv them!

I hope you come to a decision and manage to pick a name you both like - it's not always easy to do, is it

cheesesarnie · 10/01/2009 00:04

bum yes.KELLY HONEY is great.

xxhunnyxx · 10/01/2009 00:02

I do like the name Honey and yes I think it prob is best as a middle name.

paolosgirl · 09/01/2009 23:56

DON'T FORGET THE CAPS LOCK

cheesesarnie · 09/01/2009 23:54

like flora too but kelly hunny wins.

paolosgirl · 09/01/2009 23:50

KELLY HONEY!!!

Seriously though, I think you just have to go with what you and your dh/dp like. I'm a real fan of traditional first names and more outlandish middle names, so that they have an alternative if they want. My favourite name at the moment is Flora - but wee doubts with that as well because of the margarine!

xxhunnyxx · 09/01/2009 23:44

What name have u picked paolosgirl? We're torn for a girls name.

paolosgirl · 09/01/2009 23:42

I'm kind of torn with Lola. I do like it, but then as xxhunny said, there are lots of other connotations with the name (and not forgetting the rather irritating sister of Charlie) so I don't know.

It's a moot point for me though, because I have already picked out the name of my next DD

cheesesarnie · 09/01/2009 23:36

i love lola.

xxhunnyxx · 09/01/2009 23:35
  1. Lola...she was a show girl.
  2. The Kinks song Lola (2 awful songs that will be sung to her throughout her whole life!
  3. it looks like LOL
  4. Her sister is called Molly so they'll always be referred to as Mol and Lol.
  5. Lola Ferrari

I just hate it.

cheesesarnie · 09/01/2009 23:35

i love it paulo

cheesesarnie · 09/01/2009 23:34

rofl laughing(not at name-at thread)talk about being up your own backside.
name isnt my taste but im sure people dont like my dc names either.maybe considered boring.

paolosgirl · 09/01/2009 23:33

If I ever had another DD (with Neil Oliver this time I've decided) I'm going to call her KELLY HONEY

What do you all think?

MaryAnnSingleton · 09/01/2009 23:24

Lola is a nice name, what's not to like ?

xxhunnyxx · 09/01/2009 23:13

Yes it's awful.
It's also awful being in that situation where u wanna tell your friend that it's a horrible name but u can't.
My friend named her little girl Lola last year and I just hate. I can rant for a good half an hour explaining my reasons why I hate it so much. I crinch every time I have to say her name!

thisisyesterday · 09/01/2009 19:26

slaone is an old irish name

Mooseheart · 09/01/2009 14:48

Blimey, ducks head under crossfire...

In answer to the OP, Anais is lovely. Sloane is aspirational and very naff.

greenday · 09/01/2009 14:44

Interesting how KellyMG starts off pointing out that OP and this thread was nasty and ended up being nasty herself.

HelenBurns · 09/01/2009 14:39

Yes that's it Hunker. I didn't realise before but I do hear the words out loud in my head as I read them, and caps just sounds like BARRY SCOTT.

Thankyou for the tip about caps btw. Maybe I am just 6afraid^ the punctuation will all be wrong so have not actually tried it.

hunkermunker · 09/01/2009 14:33

My caps doesn't affect my punctuation - if I put caps lock on. Holding down shift and typing does though.

Kelly, I find it interesting you say you find it easier to read caps - most people don't, because the letters are all the same height, so there's none of the natural up and down that means it's easier to skim read without actually looking at each word, because you just see the general shape of the word.

Not saying you DON'T find it easier, just that it's interesting.

Agree with those who see it as shouting - I've been using forums for 12 years now, so I actually read posts in caps in a shouty voice in my head, which makes my teeth itch. I expect I'm not alone in that - which might be why you've had the reaction you have on this thread.

Can you try setting your screen up so the text is a larger size, rather than using caps?

To the OP - Sloane - wouldn't use it myself, Anais, same (prefer Anais).
