My friend has a son called Riley James, he's lovely. It's not a chavvy name where I live, don't know of any others, although I'm sure there are some, but it's not very common.

InspectorGadget · 07/01/2009 23:10

It always reminds me of the lead singer off of The Lightening Seeds, his son was named Riley and their song Life of Riley was about his birth/babyhood iirc. I thought it was quite cool in the 90's and had no idea it was common/popular these days or considered chavvy.

pollywobbledoodle · 07/01/2009 22:48

one at dds school....always makes me want to sing "its the life of riley, doo, doop etc" and do a bit of a jig

soupysue · 07/01/2009 22:37

Yuk - Stereotypical chav name. This thread is asking for honest opinions and that was my very first thought.

Zebraa · 07/01/2009 21:12

I love it!!

I like it.

delightedoldbag34 · 07/01/2009 20:37

Fine if you're using it because it's a family name (mothers maiden name or other such family connotation). Otherwise sounds a bit American and makey-uppy to me. A bit too 'cool for school' maybe. And you do risk it being a bit 2009 as well. But if none of these things matter to you then it's fine! It's not offensive in any way, just a bit, well, ahem, not as nice as Charlie shall I say?

Although (and I may have this wrong) but did you say your other option is Rodney?
In which case Riley is better I think.......I think?

Any other options on the table?

cece · 07/01/2009 20:33

I live in Surrey and know of one Riley at present - she is a girl.

grumpalina · 07/01/2009 20:29

Did post this on your other thread which everyone seems to have now abandonned!!

When I was born (over 40 years ago) it was name of our (v naughty) siamese cat which in turn was named after my Dad's favourite vintage car. Just a bit of useless info to mull over!

Doesn't sound chavvy to me just very feline!

dizzydixies · 07/01/2009 20:22

its NOT chav

I like it and as long as its a good match with the surname then carry on

(also thought of lovely bloke from Buffy too )

CrushWithEyeliner · 07/01/2009 20:18

oh no - hate those surname sounding names

Zebraa · 07/01/2009 20:15

"Riley?"

(ALL TOGETHER) "Yes Miss!"

BabyBaby123 · 07/01/2009 20:12

i wouldnt think it would be very popular in Surrey to be really honest.....

harpomarx · 07/01/2009 20:12

"come here, Riley!"

"no, not you, that Riley!"

"What me, miss?"

"No, the Riley next to you, Riley"

ad infinitum

dinny · 07/01/2009 20:11

ONE, sorry

harpomarx · 07/01/2009 20:11

at dinny

it is a joke, right?

Zebraa · 07/01/2009 20:10

OP posts:
dinny · 07/01/2009 20:08

Zebraa · 07/01/2009 20:05

OP posts:
cece · 07/01/2009 19:48

I don't like it.

Also thought it was a girls name

slayerette · 07/01/2009 19:44

So glad I wasn't the only one who thought of Riley from Buffy as soon as I saw the thread title!

LiffeyMummyPig · 07/01/2009 19:42

Nancy, just read the thread after posting, and the fact is, you're right, unpalatable truth though this may be. And it's not NANCY's truth. It's all there in 'freakonomics' ladies.

LiffeyMummyPig · 07/01/2009 19:41

Chav. Train crash of a name.

tiredemma · 07/01/2009 19:04

I have come across a little boy called Beckham. Now that is a crime.

IllegallyBrunette · 07/01/2009 19:03
