I like the name Honey but not sure whether it's a bit brave?

Any thoughts?
My mum actually suggested it and I do think it's a really pretty name and like my mum said, how could your little girl not be a little cutie with a name like Honey?
But I'm quite boring and not sure if it's a bit unusual, I've never heard of anyone else called Honey, apart from the girl in the film!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I think by choosing the name Honey you are already pigeonholing her in terms of how she should look and behave. There is every chance your dd will NOT be blonde, cute and affable. Sorry, but the name would not work on a non- blonde, non-cute and non-affable child.

Mooseheart · 05/01/2009 08:55

Great - for a pole dancing labrador.

BecauseImWorthIt · 05/01/2009 08:48

Makes me think of a ditsy blonde. OK if that's what she turns out to be, but not sure about how it would suit a rocket scientist or top Government minister ...

NomDePlume · 05/01/2009 08:45

It doesn't bring forth any strong feelings in me but I do wonder how good it would be on a grown woman

MrsBadger · 05/01/2009 08:43

nope

fails the poledancer test

LilRedWG · 05/01/2009 08:42

You most definitely CAN say it angrily. Ask my niece.

LilRedWG · 05/01/2009 08:35

Hmm - I have a niece named Honey. Not overly keen to be honest. Lovely name for a new born baby but totally fails grown-up work name test for me, sorry.

I've always called DH honey as a term of endearment and was told I couldn't anymore when DN was born. I still do, but not as often now.

Do you remember Captain Darling in Blackadder?

lisalisa · 05/01/2009 08:29

I think it is a gorgeous name - reminds me of Honey from the Princess Poppy books - those books have also made me love the name Poppy too!! Seriously though - as a baby honey makes me htinkg how cute and sweet and as an adult you imagine a beatiful woman with a mane of light coloured hair and deep brown eyes. Go for it!

TheLadyEvenstar · 05/01/2009 08:23

Oh Honey is not a name i would chose........ i had a lurcher cross labrador called it

CharleeinChains · 05/01/2009 08:04

Jamie Oliver's daughter's second name is Honey not her first.

I like Honey but agrre it wouldn't suit a grown woman tbh.

mountaingirl · 05/01/2009 07:47

I know someone in their 70's called Honey. Actually he given name is Hanna but known to all as Honey. You could always do it that was round.

nooka · 05/01/2009 05:56

dh sometimes calls the children Honey, or even worse hun He did try and call me that too, but I put my foot down! I think honey is the equivalent of sweetiepie really.

seeker · 05/01/2009 05:40

It's not you that has to be brave - it's your dd!

And if she has a sister, you can call her Sugar.
Poor thing, give her a proper name!

Novacane · 04/01/2009 23:55

I had my baby in 2004, and if it was a girl i wanted to call her Honey. The film 'Honey' came out while I was pg and I couldn't believe it!!

I had a boy anyway, but think I would still have called her honey if she was a girl, and would still think about it for any future name. Not because of any chav or celeb connotation, but because I thought of it (not knowing any celbs had named prev) , and I loved it.

you call your child exactly what you want to, we spend too much time worrying what other people think.

differentID · 04/01/2009 23:50

I had a cat called Honey when I was in my teens. Not a name I would inflict on a child

andaSOLOnewyear · 04/01/2009 23:49

My friend works with a Honey in a big BIG firm(stock broker)in London. She's a very grown up Honey and lovely, posh, beautiful and friendly.

I am a normal, 'boring'(if you want to use a term like that)type of mummy, but my Dd has the same type of name which could be thought of as a bit hippy, but is very pretty and everyone loves it. I say go for it and it's no way chavvy!

nooka · 04/01/2009 23:47

Honey is a nice pet name, which you can call your daughter if you feel like it when she is small. I don't think it is a proper name however. And what if she is a feisty sort of person? Honey then wouldn't suit at all. I don't think it is fair to give a child such a loaded name. Think it's luvvy rather than chavvy though (although the two are quite compatible).

puppydetox · 04/01/2009 23:42

agree porn star.

xxhunnyxx · 04/01/2009 23:38

Yeah good point about the fact that you can't say it angrily.
My mum is a total anti-chav and if she likes it then it can't be too chavy.
I mean it's not like I'm thinking about naming her Charonnay/Diamond/Chanelle etc!

ninedragons · 04/01/2009 23:35

Porn star. And a pretty low-rent one at that.

FairLadyRantALot · 04/01/2009 23:30

well, I know a very cute and lovely little girl called Honey....and whilst not a name I would chose, I kinda like it and think it's cute....no weirder than Poppy, Holly, Jade,Saphire, Daisy,Ruby,etc....just less commonly used....

I also read a book a few years ago, where the main-character had a little girl called Honey, her reasoning was that no-one could raise thei voice or say honey in an ungry way (not sure how logic that is, lol)...the character was meant to be rather middleclass, so, not chav at all...if that helps!

xxhunnyxx · 04/01/2009 23:26

custardo u make me laugh! Yeah now that u mention it maybe it is a bit chavy!
I thought that boy's names are more difficult but it's been quite straight forward, the one and only boys name I like is Charlie and luckily my bf loves it too.
Yeah there will be associations with drugs but I expect that and I'll just tell ppl to shut up.

OP posts:
xxhunnyxx · 04/01/2009 23:22

Yeah I had thought it isn't a very good grown-up name.
There's a film called Honey, it's a teeny dance film that my teenage sister subjected me to! She's a nice character and very pretty so makes u like the name more.
I forgot about Honey in Eastenders.
My sister is 15 and called Grace, it was just before every second baby girl was named Grace so it was quite unusual at the time. I immediately thought 'that's a horrible name, it's an old woman's name' but it's now such a popular name and I think it's beautiful.
Strange how we make judgements about names because of what we associate them to rather than what they actually mean or sound like.
