would it be very mean to give a child the initials ARS?

is it too close to arse? Would they be teased at school?
I love the name Amon, DH is insisting his R name is the middle name and our surname begins with S.
I'm not so keen on spelling it Eamon, as it reminds me too much of that fella off the morning telly. Although we will shortly be moving to NZ, where no-one will know who he is, so I should probably get over that!
Anyway, thoughts on ARS please!

no body seemed intelligent enough in my schools to pick up on my initials being Arabella.Ruth.S! Actually I was christened Ruth.Arabella.S, but I'm known as my middle name Arabella. It's a risk but it never came up with me!

LiffeyAnnaLivia · 03/01/2009 11:15

Never mind about Eamonn Holmes!!! There are other Eamonns out there! I didn't even make the connection. It's just Irish for Edward afterall.

Really, I worry less about some guy on the other side of the World than having the initials ARS. THAT will be internationally problematic.

hairymcleary · 03/01/2009 08:01

thanks for your replies- I am seeing sense now! It really is the Eammon Holmes connection that's putting me off spelling it that way, but DS will grow up in NZ where no-one apart from me will make the connection.

I agree, bad idea. Baby naming books always recommend cshecking to see if initials can cause a problem and these do.

WalkinginWaynettaWonderland · 02/01/2009 20:14

Don't do it - you know it's not right.

SniffyHock · 02/01/2009 20:11

I read Amon with a short A - ie, A-mon not Ay-mon.

LiffeyAnnaLivia · 02/01/2009 20:07

Is Eamonn pronounced the same as Amon. AyMun

GrimmaTheNome · 02/01/2009 19:54

Um. Amon is a real name - as anyone who has seen Schindler's List should know, it was the name of the Nazi Commandant. Double no-no versus nice alternatives like Eamonn

Sesthinks2009willbeagreatyear · 02/01/2009 19:48

Amon does look strange and definite teasing with those initials. I'd go with adding an extra middle name or switching first and middle name round as someone else has suggested.
Hope you manage to find a solution you like.

TheFallenMadonna · 02/01/2009 19:46

I have had three surnames and my initials have always spelt something (nothing rude), and people have always noticed. DH's initials spell his first name and he hates it.

TWINSETinapeartree · 02/01/2009 19:44

My dd nearly had the initials GIT I only noticed on the way to register her and made a swift substitution.

Treebyname · 02/01/2009 19:41

Well my intials are BJ and of course i get the piss taken a lot! Sometimes i join in and its funny, but it can be annoying! I do have a middle name but they all still like to call me BJ. So yes intials do matter and someone will pick it up one day and he will be teased for it but then i find ppl will always find something to tease you about, so maybe it doesnt matter if you really like the name.

BabyBaby123 · 02/01/2009 15:29

thats a pretty crappy thing to do imo - really unnecessary - can't you add an extra initial in there or just spell it Eamon - Amon looks weird to me!

BlackEyedDogstar · 02/01/2009 15:27

Matthew = ARMS
Timothy= ARTS
Freddy=ARFS

whoingodsnameami · 02/01/2009 15:24

My initials before I married were B.O, dont do it.

BlackEyedDogstar · 02/01/2009 15:24

stick John in there somewhere

look, ARJS

l@@k! AJRS

CantSleepWontSleep · 02/01/2009 15:21

Yes. We didn't give dd our original first choice of name because that's what her initials would have been.

TheOldestCat · 02/01/2009 15:11

Sorry, very rude name = very rude word.

TheOldestCat · 02/01/2009 15:08

Um, I wouldn't if you can help it. The Eamon/Amon solution seems a good solution - it won't remind you of the telly presenter once it's your son's name. Or add another middle name.

Saying all that, DH has a name which includes a very rude name and he reckons it was the making of him!

stuffitllama · 02/01/2009 14:58

I HAVE THE SOLUTION

call him R (ichard?) A(mon) S(mith?) but use Amon all the time

mind you I wouldn't go with Amon, too much like Amen

MrsMerryHenry · 02/01/2009 14:56

Oh good God in heaven DON'T!

Unless you want him to make himself a ward of court when he's older. It has been done before, over appalling naming.

nowwearefour · 02/01/2009 14:56

i really really think that would be incredibly harsh. sorry. the name is great but the initials are just not kind.

What a silly thread, would you like these intials?

If you give him them, make sure you start saving for the massive cost of therapy for all of the bullying he will get at school.

mazzystartled · 02/01/2009 14:55

really, don't
Eamonn is way nicer than Amon [which would prob get pronounced in a really weirdy way]
