On the advice of Liffey and after you slated my last girl's name, what about............

Brucie?

For a girl

Not totally a piss take, you have lots of both names, eg Leslie/Lesley, Tracie/Tracey, Charlie/Charlie etc

The more I think about it the more I think it holds promise

OK Mumsnetters, please be nicer to me than last time, what do you all think?

You're not giving yourself individuality in this world of 'clones' - you are simply allying yourself with another group, the chavvy group. Mis-spelling names deliberately is one of the most conformist things you can do.

Far better to choose an original, unusual name and spell it properly.

I actually really like Bruce for a boy. I know a ten yr old Bruce. I think it's different but not stupid. JMO.

There are so many cool girl names that don't have to be the least bit controversial or awkward to spell or say. Harder with boys to get something unique, but for girls, you don't need to choose anything even slightly 'strange' in order to be unique.

If you want unusal why not go for a name that is a proper name but spell it right. Such as Xanthe or Lettice

Is it "gnaw" or "na" at the end?

The Elly bit I get, but I seem to have to say "Elly-gnaw" (obv as gnaw is usually pronounced, not like Gnasher in the Beano!) when I pronounce it.

Does that clear that up?
