Is Vera unusable?

I've even changed my name to ask this just in case
I think it's pretty, with the up and coming popularity of the V names like Vivienne, Verity etc
Toyed with the idea of Elvira but it sounds a bit like a beauty product and in any case I'd be using Vera as the short version.
So what do you think?

It's actually growing on me during the thread. It's obviously due a comeback. I would never be cool enough to use it myself. Sounds a bit like an icy-eyed science fiction heroine - Vera Valiant or similar - was there one?

NotQuiteCockney · 03/01/2009 08:56

I think it's lovely. Not a fan of Elvira, though, so much - it makes me think of this woman. She's obviously even less famous in the UK, though, as nobody on here has mentioned her.

LynetteScavo · 03/01/2009 08:53

No.

delightedoldbag34 · 03/01/2009 08:07

I think it may be due for an 'old lady name' come back (a la Mabel, Edith, Pearl etc) and although Vera does make me automatically think 'Duckworth' from C.Street I think it might actually be quite nice for a little baby. Different certainly! If you love it then don't be put off it or you'll regret it!

However, I do think Verity is much 'classier' and probably prettier, and have always loved Vivien (nne).

ScottishMummy · 02/01/2009 19:57

Vera?yes if your name is duckworth otherwise i'd give it a body swerve

mogwai · 02/01/2009 19:48

Good grief it's awful

paolosgirl · 01/01/2009 17:24

Pearl is pronounced peril (with a hard r)by a lot of people up here north of the border! A lot of names sound good when pronounced in one accent and not so good in another.

Sesi · 01/01/2009 17:14

My first association is Vera Wang. So I think of it as an über fashionable and cool name.

Most of the old names I think are frumpy but I ?get? this one. I also like Pearl and Iris.

MrsMattie · 01/01/2009 16:58

Horrible. Was horrible in my gran's day, and horrible now.

Wolfblass · 01/01/2009 08:46

Personally the only reason i don't like it is that FIL's 'fiance' is Vera and she is an old hag.

That isn't being snobbish or cruel either, she likes nothing more than to get very drunk (in her 60's) and then gets lewd and rude. She isn't well turned out and reminds me of a much harsher version of the Onslow family in Keeping Up Appearances!
So it's out for me.

However i do prefer Verity, Violet, Vivienne if you are thinking if a V name.

It's ok.

Nancy66 · 31/12/2008 21:23

it's short for Veronica isn't it? Don't like it - too old haggish.

squik · 31/12/2008 21:11

I like Dora, but then a favourite Aunt of mine was called Dorcas and they shortened it too Dora.

Rindercella · 31/12/2008 21:11

I know a German girl in her 20s called Vera. One of the prettiest (and nicest) girls I have ever met.

squik · 31/12/2008 21:10

Would it be Veronica shortened to Vera? Or just Vera.

Meglet · 31/12/2008 21:09

lovely name. it will come back. i reckon it will be weird for a little baby then she'll grow into it. ( i just gave our DD an unusual name and its growing on her beautifully)

jeanjeannie · 31/12/2008 21:06

I like it but can't get rid of the Corrie link! I've got a Verity and my dad calls her 'V' just like Jack called Vera and I'm not keen!!

pinkmagic1 · 31/12/2008 19:56

Personally think it sounds a bit old fashioned. My Nans Violet, which I actually quite like, but she hates.

havengelle · 31/12/2008 19:52

Lovely, if you can forget the one from Corrie.
Although I remember my mother referring to older ladies named Vera as Vinegar Vera in the early 70s, not sure why.

annabelcaramel · 31/12/2008 19:14

I would have been neutral had my evil step-mum-in-law not got a bulldog called Vera...

Fillyjonk · 31/12/2008 19:12

no its nice

it means truth, doesn't it? Good name.

wheresthehamster · 31/12/2008 19:08

'Allo Vera!

No, don't.

girlandboy · 31/12/2008 19:05

So long as you haven't a ds called Jack!

jellybeans · 31/12/2008 19:03
