Ellynor?

We are contemplating the name Ellynor - spelt as it sounds, for our next dc, we want to be unusual and know that Eleanor is the usual spelling but are quite keen of going slightly off centre.

Honest thoughts please - but do be gentle

ooh yes. at work we have elena eleni helena. it is a lovely name in all its variants.

aidansyummymummy · 30/12/2008 22:26

please no.....she will soon get fed up with her unusual spelling

thisisyesterday · 30/12/2008 22:25

but Elena is a whole different name surely? said elayna?

BoccaDellaVerita · 30/12/2008 22:25

But the 'help with spelling' thing only applies for the very short time it takes your daughter to learn to spell her name. For everyone else, it will be a pain in the neck as they will have to unlearn the conventional e-l-e-a-n-o-r spelling.

'Fraid I'm boring too: I think you should opt for Eleanor or Elinor or, alternatively, pick a genuinely wacky name, rather than an invented spelling of a conventional name.

SpaceTrain · 30/12/2008 22:25

yuk

Hassled · 30/12/2008 22:24

Oh blimey, I dunno

Finola - Gaelic version is Fionnuala. Pronounced Finoola.

I'll try and come up with something better!

fishie · 30/12/2008 22:24

you are all missing this pron thing.

el eh nor

or

el ih nor

the y could be either.

TigerFeet · 30/12/2008 22:24

It would be a problem though, as most people spell it Eleanor so would assume that it's spelled that way. I certainly would.

I love it, would have used it for dd but it's my sister's name.

My Mum and I wanted to spell it Elena but my dad oput his foot down - glad he did tbh, Eleanor is pretty as it is imo.

27 · 30/12/2008 22:22

Elinor is good, and unusual.
I think that if you spell it Ellynor people will just think you didnt know how it was meant to be spelt.

slackrunner · 30/12/2008 22:22

I like Elinor or Eleanor, really not too keen on spelling it Ellynor.

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:22

Ok Hassled, give me an example that I can give to my dh please

I an not that keen on the name persoanlly anyway, but if you do want it please spell it right - Eleanor

ja9ladiesdancing · 30/12/2008 22:22

nonono

AnarchyAunt · 30/12/2008 22:21

Nah.

She'd be forever spelling it to people. Off centre is one thing but inventing a spelling for a very common name is unnecessary IMO. If you want to be unusual choose an unusual name surely? 'Cos when people hear it (which they will do more often than see it) they will have no idea you were trying to be off centre.

Eleanor is a lovely name though.

thisisyesterday · 30/12/2008 22:21

you could go for Elinor.
still traditional, but more phonetic

fishie · 30/12/2008 22:21

elenore

elinor

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:21

Oooops sorry

OP posts:
Twinklemegan · 30/12/2008 22:21

If you want a less common spelling, at least go for a genuine one. Elinor (the original spelling as it happens).

ILoveBrucie · 30/12/2008 22:20

But it is spelt as it sounds, so surely it will help with the spelling?
