What is your child called, and what do they GET called?

Everyone spells DS's name wrong, but it is spelt a few different ways so I can forgive it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
LiffeyValleyOfTheDolls · 31/12/2008 13:43

I was looking at the xmas cards and about 50% had one of their names wrong.

Clarissimo · 31/12/2008 11:51

DS1 is Samuel. Or Samule as my adored best mate spells it LOL. DS2 is Stirling- or, as many a person (understandably?) chooses to write, Sterling.

IIRC we had a Sebastienne as well this year in our cards (ds4), but as yet Harold hasnt been spelled in any other way.

muminthecity · 31/12/2008 11:41

DD is Daisy, I never thought when I chose it that anyone would have any trouble spelling/pronouncing it, but it seems I was wrong. Ex MIL has always spelt it either Daisie or Daisey, NEVER Daisy despite me telling her a good few times . She has even bought her some personalised tat stuff for her bedroom, the type you order from crappy catalogues over the phone, half of which has Daisey on it, the other half has Daisie . Other people have also used those spellings in cards. It often gets misheard as Stacey or Tracey, but that's easy enough to correct!

HallelujahHeisBorntoMary · 31/12/2008 11:40

I had to laugh when DD was born and we named her Rebecca. MIL wanted it put in the newspaper and did it as a surprise for us... the newspaper spelled it Rebecca and MIL got all upset that they'd got it wrong - she thought it was spelled Rebekkah!

I was SO pleased the paper had got it right, I'd have been really narked and not kept the cuttings if it had been wrong...

unfitmother · 31/12/2008 11:30

The Gabriel/Gabrielle is pure ignorance.
I have to say, I wouldn't have a clue how to spell Kaeden, so I'd ask.

3isthemagicnumber · 31/12/2008 11:21

all the time-
ds2 is Louis which is often spelt Louie or Luis on cards etc. Dont mind that at all but do get bit miffed when people call him Lewis and have had some even insist that we have his name wrong not them........

dramaqueen72 · 31/12/2008 00:47

oh yes, DS has an unusual name but mostly people get it right, DD however is Mollie. and gets Molly instead all the time. I dont mind, its to be expected, altho when close family do it I am abit miffed!
my name -melanie- is never spelt right however! i've had some weird versions in the past!

walkingprimrose · 31/12/2008 00:41

thisisyesterday -

my ds is also officially called Gabriel, although we now call him by his middle name.... This is largely due to the same horrendous experience of people calling him Gabrielle all the time... At the Doctors etc. Even some friends would call him Gabrielle even if I'd just called him Gabriel in the preceeding sentence. It did my head in! My town just was not ready for such an ancient, well known, historical, biblical name!! I ended up changing his name because of this as I didn't want his life to blighted by it. Sometimes I think I should have stuck it out....

What is wrong with these fools????!!!

bohemianbint · 30/12/2008 17:56

Absolutely everyone, and I would tell you their names but they're that random it would blow my anonymity completely if anyone I knew was on here...

muggglewump · 30/12/2008 17:55

Yes, all the time.
My daughter's name is Niamh.

It's to be expected since we don't live in Ireland and we're used to it now. I loved the name though and insisted it was spelled correctly and not phonetically.

boogeek · 30/12/2008 17:54

Tamsin gets Tasmin. All the time. Is that even a name?

keels26 · 30/12/2008 17:50

Have given my children names that you cant really pronounce wrong, even though the spelling is sometimes wrong. This is largely down to the fact that my names Keeley and have spent most of my life being called Kelly, Kayleigh,Kylie etc. Very annoying!

Yes, all the time.

DD1 is Eloise, and it is often spelt Elloise, and also Ellaouise??? Also shortened to Ella (which we're cool with) and Ellie (which we're not!)

DD2 is Katherine. Again, people always get that wrong - usually spelt with the C or Kathryn. Never Katharine though! People also shorten her name - mostly to Katie. Hubby and I have lots of nicknames for her, but now at 2, she seems to have decided that she likes Katie (which is a shame as that's the one I like least!) But her name, her decision!

People also get my name wrong all the time though, and always have so its never bothered me.

mloo · 30/12/2008 14:59

DS2 = Tristan. Often called 'Christian' by other children, and mispelt as 'Tristian' by some adult at school.

DS1= Daniel, once mispelt as "Denial" (LOL) by his Bangladeshi playworker at playgroup.

I don't mind any of it, though (since DSs themselves don't mind, why should I?)

gonaenodaethat · 30/12/2008 14:58

People sometimes do spell DD2's name wrong but I can't get too excited about it.
There just happen to be several spellings - all correct - and people aren't psychic.
I think if you're going to get your knickers in a twist about it you should stick to less complicated names.

thisisyesterday · 30/12/2008 14:53

we have a Gabriel who regularly gets called Gabrielle. people spell it Gabrielle too.

i don't get it at all.
they know he is a boy. why would he be called Gabrielle???
I have one friend who claims she has never come across the name. which i find hard to believe... i mean surely most people of our age have seen a bloody nativity?

Nearly everyone spells DD name wrong - they spell it the traditional way.

After numerous times of telling people, they still spell it wrong grrr

Squirdle · 30/12/2008 14:38

I have Caleb who people often spell wrong or mispronounce! I fnd it daft as it is actually pronounced and spelt the way it sounds and looks! The oddest spelling we have had is from DH's friend who spelt it Kailib. We went to his house for dinner last night and ds very kindly spelt it on his fridge with magnets so that DH's friend would remember how to spell it Caleb often gets pronounced Calem (there is a 'b' at the end!!) and people always say 'Calub' It's Caleb! If DS3 can pronounce it properly at just 4, then why can't others! DS3 is Dylan who often has his name spelt 'Dillon'

I am a one for liking unusual, yet proper names but like them to be spelt correctly (not Caleb with a K as DH told everyone when he was born [angry)

DS1 is Alex, we haven't had a problem with his name!

BuwchBywiog · 30/12/2008 13:50

I've got an Emyr that is mispronounced all the time!

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 30/12/2008 13:38

Bryonie-Rae has been called Rhiannon, Brownyn, Brianna Brinley and Briney.

It gets spelled Briany, Bryony, Brieny, Breany.

I guess if we were welsh it would be easier for people to grasp. I live in a fairly common town where there are lots of Rhiannons and Briannas but only two Bryonies.

missymoo2411 · 30/12/2008 13:31

fearne gets fern

sweetkitty · 30/12/2008 13:27

DD1 got Abbey, Abbi, Abi, Abby as well as the correct Abbie

DD3 got one Bethaney never seen it spelt like that before.

I think it's terrible you send cards to these people with your DC names on them, if you are unsure of the spelling check the card or ask the person.

Also had one card with DD2 missed off and one with DD3 missed off.

Bubbaloo · 30/12/2008 13:08

Ds2 is Ethan and on every pressie this year from my mum,she had spelt is Eathan!
