Does anyone spell or say your child's name wrong?

MumofBaby · 30/12/2008 12:13

What is your child called, and what do they GET called?

Everyone spells DS's name wrong, but it is spelt a few different ways so I can forgive it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I have no issues with people generally mis-spelling my dc's names (although my dc's names are all spelled the 'traditional' way), but when family do it, it realllllly winds me up!

My dd1 is Lucy. Straightforward, yes? Ok, it can be spelled Lucie, so maybe I could let that go, but she has had 'Loosey' on a card before now. Loosey?? Loosey?? WTF?? And that was off her aunt!!

LadyoftheBathtub · 21/08/2009 09:30

When you think about it actually a huge proportion of names have alternative spellings or are easily confused with other names - so it's kind of forgivable if the person doesn't know you.

But it does rile me when close friends and people who have known us for years get DS's name wrong. OK it's a bit unusual but it's only 5 letters and very straightforward. It ends in -ie and loads of people write it without the -e (eg if it was Charlie they would write Charli) - wtf is that about?

girlsyearapart · 21/08/2009 09:22

Yep I'm Ellen and have been asked 'What's that short for?' or called Helen or Elin and I didn't really think it was an unusual name..
My niece is constantly being called the wrong name as her name is not English but is EASY topronounce but people still insist on pronouncing it wrong. Drives me mad ket alone my sister!

TiggerIsEisCat · 21/08/2009 09:14

pml at all of the above especially people confusing Lydia for Rhidian!!!!!!!!!
Where does that come from?

spiderlight · 20/08/2009 23:17

We have a Rhidian. Everyone can pronounce it but we've had all sorts of spellings, even here in Wales - 'Rhydian' I can forgive because that's a perfectly legitimate (and I think slightly more common) spelling, but we also get Rhiddian, Rhyddian, Rhidyan, Ridian, Rhydwen (from my dad, for about a month after he was born) and once, inexplicably, Lydia!!

oldspeckledtam · 20/08/2009 21:01

Tigger- My mom is Eileen. 'That' song was in the charts when she went two weeks overdue with my brother... People kept ringing her and playing it down the phone...

My name is Tamsin, not Tasmin. When I started at my new school (teacher) the laptop I was assigned had Tasmin on it. As did my login. I let the sticker go, but I refused to spell my own name wrong to access the systems and insisted they changed it.

My daughter is Anabelle Frances. She gets all sorts of variations on Anabelle, which I don't mind. I did object to Annie recently though... She prefers Ana. H spells Frances wrong all the time (Francis) and she was names for HIS gran!

I teach a Louis that is pronounced Lewis and Siobhan that is pronounced See-oh-be-ann. They call her Oh-be for short. Both kids told me their names and I've got them right ever since. I always check pronunciation first time I take the register, then I remember! It's not exactly hard.

jay11 · 20/08/2009 13:34

Yes - we have Maya (my-ah). If I'd known how much it would be mispronounced and misspelt I'd never have chosen it. She gets called May-a and Mia and Myra by her own grandmother who also can't seem to spell it right. Mostly spelt Myah, Mya. . .the list goes on!

notevenamousie · 20/08/2009 13:26

My DD is Freya and family and colleagues often seem to go for Thea. Not that there is anything wrong with Thea - I've even stopped correcting them now.

TiggerIsEisCat · 20/08/2009 13:18

simplesusan if i didnt have this on a daily basis i would most likely laugh too this goes hand in hand with being told 'did you know there is a song with your name in it??' well yes i happen to have hear5d it sung (off key) to me one or twice...a day.. every day of my GODFORSAKEN EXISTANCE SO STOP EFFIN SINGING THE FARKING THING!!

simplesusan · 20/08/2009 11:34

Sorry Tigger-your post had me in stitches.
How thick are some people surely when you tell someone once that your child is called Sian and tell them how you pronounce it that should be the end of it.
I disagree with the poster who said about giving a child a simple name that noone can mis-spell. Look at Ann/Anne Jo/Joe etc and like I said how difficult is Matthew to spell?
I remember a woman once telling me that her child was called Jay. She told me how a friend of hers said "You have called your child J, just the letter J and that's it?" She had to reassure her several times that Jay is actually a real name, like Kay is also a name.

TiggerIsEisCat · 19/08/2009 23:33

oh my jeez yep yep yep!! my DD is sian and we have t correct people calling her sean someone calle her see-an and she has had cards from family members spelling it sharne how hard is it to get 4 letters in the right order??

my name is eileen and i am constantly being called irene/elaine/helen/ellen/eilen it is as old as the hills so not really a name that most people wouldnt have heard of really i get wrong spelling aswell...
irlene, eleine, elleen, irelen, aislene, one of the best was eiraleane some people just like to overcomplicate things and are obviously so self absorbed that they cant engage their brains for long enough to hear me say MY NAME IS EILEEN E-I-L-E-E-N

simplesusan · 19/08/2009 23:13

2 of my dcs regularly get their name misspelt.

My ds is Matthew and loads of people mainly close freinds and his classmates (who must see his name written down virtually everyday ffs) spell it Mathew. My dh says they are either thick or lazy.

Personally if I am unsure I just ask is that the x spelling or the y spelling.

Phoenix · 19/08/2009 22:44

Ds1 is Lewis and people always ask how it is spelt, L-E-W-I-S or L-O-U-I-S. Even family some family members write Louis in birthday/christmas cards.

Ds2 is Noah and someone put Noa on a card.

My name gets spelt wrong quite often too, 1 N instead of 2, the E missing off the end

geekgirl · 19/08/2009 22:35

dd2 is called Katarina and gets called Katrina by loads of people, she's also been called 'Catriona' by someone reading her name off a form . The inlaws still can't spell it right.

SKYTVADDICT · 19/08/2009 22:33

DD2 is Freya and my ex MIL can't spell it correctly even after 9 years !!

She spells is Frayer ! and has been told many times.

aoifesmama · 19/08/2009 22:28

DD is only 4 months and is Aoife - think I cant count on one hand how many times its been spelt correctly. Lots of variations when people say her name, Evie, Eva, Adif ?!

DH is Isaac and his always gets spelt wrong too.

TattyCatty · 19/08/2009 22:08

DD is Scarlett, which is regularly spelt with just one "t", like the colour rather than the name. At the ripe old age of 3.5, she is already quick to correct anybody that calls her Charlotte by mistake!

HecatesTwopenceworth · 19/08/2009 22:01

My eldest often gets called Gareth, - that's NOT his name and many people spell his actual name with an a and an e even though it is 2 'a's (not next to each other )

And nobody is quite sure how to spell or pronounce ds2's name

they are both quite unusual, to be fair. But it still pisses me off

Alishanty · 19/08/2009 21:55

We have a Solomon which more often than not gets spelled Soloman and occasionally Soliman! Drives me nuts as I always make a point of writing his name in full in cards so that people will 'get it' for next time but they don't.
We have an Esme which we pronounce Es-mee, which sometimes gets pronounced 'Esmay' and sometimes people spell it Esmie or variation.
My name is Alice and when i was younger I frequently got called 'Alison'. Thankfully now Alice is more in vogue than Alison it is happening less and less.

BakuMum · 19/08/2009 16:03

We have a DS2 named Emil. Whilst he hasnt yet been called Emily, he did receive a first birthday card from my Aunt addressed to Email.... planning on DS3 called facebook.

ithinkmydaughterispeppapig · 18/08/2009 19:18

3 out my DC get their names spelt wrong even by their own family [grr..]

Connor gets spelt Conner
Jodi gets spelt Jodie
Sonny gets spelt Sunnie
At least no one ever gets Tyler wrong!!

I know they are all correct spellings but it's not the way I spell them!!!

Also my name is Maria not Marie, nothing against the name Marie it's just not my name.
Drives me crazy when I have to correct people and sometimes even though I have corrected them I still get called Marie

KirstyJC · 18/08/2009 17:49

My name, Kirsty, has been written in all sorts of odd ways. Kirstie, Kirstey, and my personal favourite Curstie.

DS1 is Louis - usually pronounced Lewis by anyone who sees it written down.

A while ago, a nurse at the hospital called him Lewis, I said 'no it's Louis' and she insisted that it was 'Lewis' and showed me the card, saying look it says Lewis. How do you spell it then? Err, Louis. 'But that is pronounced Lewis'. Well, by you, clearly. By anyone with any sense, no. (How can 16 kings of France be wrong?!). She then made me spend ages confirming all sorts of other details to make sure he really was who the appt card said he was, since she didn't believe it was the correct boy!! Stupid woman!

GooseyLoosey · 18/08/2009 17:28

The dcs both have Irish names. Anyone who sees them written down cannot pronounce them and anyone who just hears them cannot write them down. In public places like the doctors, they are referred to as Master and Miss Gooosey as the receptionist don't dare attempt the names. Not a problem though for them or me. They quite like the fact that no one gets their names on first attempt and I never thought that anyone would.

madremia09 · 18/08/2009 17:26

just realised my explanation of how it is said can be said as louisa too, lmao.
dont know howto explain it really? emphasis on the "S"? like a harsh sounding s rather than soft?
oh well i give up,you get my jist haha
