What is your child called, and what do they GET called?

Everyone spells DS's name wrong, but it is spelt a few different ways so I can forgive it.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

My dd Kelsey, gets spelt wrong as well as being called Chelsea and Elsie.
My ds Brynley has numerous wrong spellings and gets called Brynsly, Bryndley, Bradley, Brineally. Brynally ....He has even been transfered from 1 hospital to another(heart condition) as Brittney (wrong sex).

Most people spell dd1's name with an E in it, but it doesn't have an E in it as it's not the Irish spelling of the name that she has it's the Persian spelling. But there is an actress with the same name so everyone thinks it's spelt the same way as her.

Dd2's name only has one L in it but some people spell it with two.

cheesesarnie · 23/08/2009 01:19

people end dd's name with an 'ie' instead of a 'y'.even her teachers!

Deeeja · 23/08/2009 01:17

MaggieLeo, it is an Arabic name. I may have to give up on it though, I can see myself being constantly annoyed, no way will teachers pronounce it correctly at school.

LittleMissWorryHead · 22/08/2009 10:54

I have a friend who constantly writes Chloe as Cloe and it really pisses me off.

MaggieLeo · 22/08/2009 10:53

deeeja how do you pronounce an h in the middle of a word?

Deeeja · 21/08/2009 21:52

People would regularly call ds1 by the female version of his name, he was not amused. Now he is older most call him by a nickname.
People often pronounce ds2's name slightly wrong, which used to annoy me so much, since I prefer the way I pronounce it. But what really gets my goat is the complete mispronunciation of ds3's name, with all the emphasis of on the wrong syllables, ruined a beautiful name.
Am now expecting a dd, I want to call her Zahra, with the 'h' definately pronounced, but even my dsis is saying it without the 'h', I am not happy.

BakewellTarts · 21/08/2009 21:14

My MIL calls DD1 EVElyn rather than EvElyn (sorry not that good at phonetic typing but think Celtic rather than English pronunciation). Still a pretty name but NOT my DDs, drives me mad. Then there are my friends who insist on calling her Evie...

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/08/2009 21:13

bleep, malfunction, syntax error.

I am picturing you like one of those machines from the 1970s smash ads.

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/08/2009 21:11

Marcus is a beautiful name. QUite underused and a Roman classic to boot. Fabulous name.

pranma · 21/08/2009 21:10

My dd ıs Joanna and most people saıd Joanne when she was lıttle ın the 70s.She used to say A very loudly-ıts odd cos I stıll love the name Joanna and dont really lıke Joanne however she has been Jo for years so I suppose ıt doesnt matter any more.

rattling · 21/08/2009 21:00

Perfect spot to vent over newborn son being called Marcus by a variety of people - including my dad and brother! It's MAGNUS.

Final insult was to get child benefit, and then Child Trust Fund voucher addressed to Marcus. They had the birth certificate to get the name from

Jenf2306 · 21/08/2009 19:17

my dd is Lacey - we get alsorts of spellings - laci, lacie, lacy

we do say its not tracey or stacey lots too

ZippysMum · 21/08/2009 19:06

oops. Think I can't spell it except phonetically. Please add correct spelling if you know it!

ZippysMum · 21/08/2009 19:04

I also worked at a Summer playgroup and there was a gorgeous little girl there (very PFB, always matching hair ribbons and socks) called Genevieve. Don't know how many ways there are of pronouncing it, but I still remember it being drummed into me that she was Jen-A-Vee-Ev.
She had 17 pairs of shoes

DD is friends with an Amelia and her mother stiffly says on almost a daily basis, "No it's AH-MA-LAY-AH"

Wonderstuff · 21/08/2009 18:51

My name is unusual, its phonetically spelt so if people see it written fine, but lots of people 'hear' it wrong which is a bit annoying. On french exchange the mother called me curtain and when I was little one of the children on our estate asked my mum why she called me custard! My surname is Welsh so I have had a lifetime of spelling out my name, I don't wait for people to ask any more, if I know they are writing it I automatically spell it all out.

DD is Isla and so spelling not an issue but does get pronounced iz-la fairly frequently, normally by people who have English as a second language, doesn't really bother me, we expected it, easy enough to correct.

helpivegottogivebirth · 21/08/2009 18:49

My daughter is called Polly. She is routinely called Poppy or Holly, even by close friends. About 10% of the cards we received on her birth had the wrong name on it.

ZippysMum · 21/08/2009 18:47

Hi all,
I'm with Maggie - some unusual spellings of names are asking for trouble! I used to teach a girl named Chole (pronounced like Chloe - can only presume the parents spelt it wrongly when registering the poor child).

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/08/2009 18:20

funny thread which has me laughing! I despair alongside most of you but come on! some of you deserve hassle!! why would anybody spell Aidan 'Aiden' or Annabel 'Anabelle'. That's just asking for trouble.

Very funny about the Amelia being introduced as Armani!! ONe's very classic and the other's an Italian sur name!

MamaLazarou · 21/08/2009 18:19

My aunty has never spelt my name correctly on birthday and Christmas cards/presents. Not once in 34 years.

TiggerIsEisCat · 21/08/2009 12:19

@ loosey!! i think your MNid could be quite easily applied to that person who sent the card plonker

that is exactly what riles me!! it is not as bad if it is a stranger but when it is my family or DH's it really pees me off!!
