Spelling Advice Please: Ruben or Reuben?

Hi there...

Already settled on Reuben/Ruben as name of DS1..so PLEASE no negative comments on the name (positive ones always welcome hehe), because we're happy with it.

However, can't decide which way to spell it & would love some advice.

a)REUBEN = it's the traditional root of the name, is Hebrew in origin (which suits his heritage), looks more symmetrical?, would it be tricky to spell/say or do you think it's manageable?

b)RUBEN = a)easier to spell & pronounce?? b)poss less likely to get shortened to 'Ben' (which wouldn't want, prefer Ru or Rube) c)Spanish origin which is no reflection on his background

really interested in your advice

xx

Rueben are turnips in German Grin

EleanorShellstrop100 · 10/11/2019 16:48

Just realized that Reuben/Ruben is probably about 11 years old Blush

EleanorShellstrop100 · 10/11/2019 16:47

I have a Reuben and EVERYONE spells it Rueben. Even when replying to messages where I’ve written it with the correct spelling! Ruben is the Spanish version and I love Spanish names but it didn’t look quite complete to me. I don’t really care that everyone spells his name wrong but I do sometimes think that if I’d gone with the Spanish spelling then they wouldn’t.

Reuben.

Ruben looks like “rubbing” or “rubella”

daisypond · 09/11/2019 08:22

Reuben - unless you’re Spanish

felix1988 · 09/11/2019 05:55

My 31 year old son's name is Ruben. It's the Spanish spelling of the name. Starting to see a few more around now.
People always automatically think it has a difficult spelling but always get it the wrong way round, Rueben as opposed to Reuben.
The Spanish spell it Ruben. The Reuben spelt is the Hebrew spelling.
I love the name Ruben and it has suited and served my boy well... Great pick.

One additional consideration:

Reuben is pronounced Roy-ben in any Germanic/Nordic language

whereas

Ruben is always pronounced Roo-ben in any language

Not sure if that matters to you, but I thought I'd point it out.

I have a Ruben as my hubby is Spanish and actually, if you spell it that way, you should put an accent mark above the E as it´s pronounced, ruBEN in Spain. (with a rolled R too, if you wanna be a perfectionist!) So unless you live in Spain, go with Reuben. He won´t thank you for the "different" spelling!

Alishanty · 20/12/2008 23:29

Reuben. It's my ds's middle name, never even considered the other way tbh.

HarktheheraldAnglepoise · 19/12/2008 01:05

Definitely Reuben. FWIW, the only one I know gets shortened to Reubs.

EightiesChick · 18/12/2008 23:35

Reuben, definitely.

dinkymum · 18/12/2008 20:31

its a name i'm considering and for me it'd be Reuben

twitteringbirds · 18/12/2008 12:29

Reuben, for all the reasons listed so far.

Why post at all, Kerrymum?

FlirtyThirty · 18/12/2008 12:27

Reuben. No question for me.

ninah · 18/12/2008 11:50

I prefer Reuben as Ruben makes me think of voluptuous women but my friend has a Ruben, and I do like the name (she was planning on Maurice but changed to her dp's relief)

SophtheRedNosedReindeer · 18/12/2008 11:40

Ruben is how it's spelt in Spain (we live in the Canary Islands & DS1 has a friend called Ruben) so spell it how you like imo.

Lovely name btw & Merry Christmas

Anna8888 · 18/12/2008 11:08

Gorgeous name, btw.

Anna8888 · 18/12/2008 11:07

Reuben.

Ruben is just wrong.

Jenbottleofeggnog · 18/12/2008 11:06

Reuben.
Ruben looks weird.

And I think it's a great name.

BoyMeetsWorld · 18/12/2008 09:52

thanks for the spelling advice guys, that has completely confirmed how I was feeling, yay
