My kids say they have horrid names!

MmmMum · 16/12/2008 20:46

I have 6 kids... 4 dd's and 2 ds's... both my son's and one of my daughter's hate their names and middle names.

I feel like such a failure!

Linnie A
River D
Russell-Jay A
Nemea L
Coral V
and
Acacius J

I think they are lovely, does anyone like them?

you chose what you like that is what is important!!

BabyBaby123 · 18/12/2008 13:44

River is not unique - I know a very chavvy couple who have one

subtlemouse · 18/12/2008 13:04

TB, while River may or may not be lovely according to preference, it is in no way unique: over 1000 children were given it as a forename between 1984 and 2005 and doubtless many more in the subsequent years.

Think up an 'obscure' name and chances are someone is already called it.

I, on the other hand, have a child with an absolutely unique name, even though his nickname is nearly always at the top of the lists - his (hyphenated) surname actually IS unique (for the moment)!

lljkk · 18/12/2008 09:36

Why should kids have to like the names we chose for them?
As a teenager I changed my name from one common name to another common name I don't really remember why, any more, I guess 1st common name was just too grown up or old-fashioned for me! 2nd common name seemed prettier at the time.
My mother forgave me.
No Big Deal.

I like River, Russell and Coral. Others are hardly the worst I ever heard.
Looking at names of DS reception classmates the other day, I realised that about 80% were unusual: Trinity, Kristian, Kai, Chelsea, Zaranne (pronounced "Sa-rahn"), etc.

TopBitch · 18/12/2008 09:35

Did you know that in many countries, the name is a common word? You could be named Banana or Small (in the local language) and it's not a big issue.

TopBitch · 18/12/2008 09:23

I like all of the their second names and I LOVE river. It's so unique.

I have both a chinese name and an English name. Unfortunately, the English one is also a bit long as it's hyphenated, so I go by a shorter name. If your children don't like their names, ask them if they would like to change.

poinsettydog · 17/12/2008 20:30

well, I can see why a kid would hate them. They are too unusual

SmilePlease · 17/12/2008 20:28

Ok, troll or not. I actually LOVE the names. I think i'm going to steal Nemea away.

I've heard the myth before, it's a really pretty story and her mum was called Selene. .

OP - tell your ds's that you were going to call them Willy and Cassandra, i think they'll be pretty happy with their names then!!

Only name i really dislike is Russell-Jay i mean it'd be abreviated to RJ. That's a bit of a chav name?
Sorry if you take affence.

ScummyMummy · 17/12/2008 17:46

Trollery aside, I really liked winkywinkola's post lower down.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 17:36

Coco is nice.

mysterymoniker · 17/12/2008 17:21

I've got a Coral! We've never met another one, she's 16 now and her friends call her CoCo which is cute.

SnowballsintheSky · 17/12/2008 17:16

Oh blimey, I never spot trolls

CoteDAzur · 17/12/2008 17:11

It's obvious that namechange failed. What is surprising is why she was namechanging - to make it look like someone was supporting her choice of names.

Very bizarre.

SnowballsintheSky · 17/12/2008 17:07

Point them to this thread and they'll soon see how gorgeous their names are.

For what it's worth I really like some of the names, the others are just unusual, not horrid.

Anna8888 · 17/12/2008 17:06

I don't like your children's names at all.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 17:05

Only kidding! My 'five children' would be called Sylvester, Julius, Ismene, Phaedra and Badger.

belcantwait · 17/12/2008 17:04

well i love the midddle name Jasper- its my ds's name and it really suits him.
actually i rather like your names. who wants to be boringly average andt he same as everyone else? i think your kids will thank you as they get older tho i do think that perhaps unusal quirky names can be hard to 'live up to ' iykwim.
i think its v rude people saying they doint like them, but you did ask, and its a bit late now anyway is it not??

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 17:04

I'm mmmmmMum!

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 17:03

Maybe she chose an already used name and the name change failed. That'd be my guess.

Anyway, all harmless enough! I can put up with ten tonnes of nonsense before I feel the urge to start shouting 'troll'. I hate the name troll!! We are all human beings with keyboards. Troll is so 'de-humanising' [silly face]

i actually really really like your children's names.

I'm sorry but that is would be hilarious if it weren't so sad.

Why on earth would you want to namechange and post as if you are someone else who agrees with you?

Kristingle · 17/12/2008 16:58

welcome to mumsnet OP

if you start a thread asking for opinions i don't think you can expect people to confine themselves to yes or now. you don't get to tell everyone else what and how to post just because you started it. that's not how Mumsnet works

CoteDAzur · 17/12/2008 16:55

What I want to know is which 3 of these 6 children actually like their names.

BabyBaby123 · 17/12/2008 16:42

you must be really bored to start a thread like this for fun op - it's not even an intersting subject - what are people meant to say if they think the names are crap? You have got to be a troll

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 17/12/2008 16:36

Just because she didn't want to link her normal screen name to her children's names doesn't mean her family doesn't exist.

If I were going to reveal both my chidren's names in one post I would dfinitely name change, as other wise, somebody would recognise me and then NONE of my other posts on any other subject would be anonymous to them.

The old name-changing to agree with oneself chesnut! Ah I think I did that myself on my early days on MN
