Please help me choose a name for a boy. After much stress! I have narrowed it down to a choice of four between me and DH.

I?m only certain that middle name will be Gabriel after a grandparent. Also the baby will likely have dark hair/brown eyes if that makes a difference.

Me and DH both agree on Victor Gabriel or Tristan Gabriel. Both these names would be our second/third choices but I don't know which is nicer?

Or my first choice is Etienne Gabriel, though I am not French. Is this naff or lovely!

Or DH first choice is Glynn or Glen Gabriel. I have so far disregarded these but am I missing something?

I really like Victor and Tristan, but slightly prefer Viktor - great name that works well in German, French and Spanish too!

Don't like Gabriel as first name due to the teasing (Gay - briel) aspect. And I thought Etienne was a girls name...

So I would go for Viktor Gabriel!

AtheneNoctua · 16/12/2008 20:32

I like Gabriel.

Victoe is okay, but reminds me of Voctor Victoria.

Don't like Entienne
Really don't like Tristan because it is a unisex name and I don't like unisex names (no idea why, I just don't)

Ethan Gabriel has a nice ring.

blinks · 16/12/2008 20:14

If you like E names there's-

Ellis
Elliott
Ethan
Evan

WinkyWinkola · 16/12/2008 20:07

Victor to me is really harsh.

Tristan to me is really gay.

Etienne is naff.

Glen is like Barry or Trevor.

Gabriel as a first name is just the best.

Or Julian Gabriel.

Mateo Gabriel?

MadamAntlers · 16/12/2008 20:05

Victor is great (DS's middle name )

I personally think Etienne Gabriel sounds swoony.

dizzyjingles · 16/12/2008 20:00

gabriel for first name

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 19:17

It's a sad story, Tristan's.

Come to think of it, so were his parents', Rivalin and Blanchfleur.

Don't think Rivalin really intended to marry Blanchefleur, but he got her pregnant and when he went to leave she told him her brother was going to kill her for being so dishonourable - a likely possibility at the time.

Hence, in the medieval sense of the term, Tristan would have been considered illegitmate, a complication that is actually mentioned in some of the earlier versions of the story.

Sibble · 16/12/2008 19:17

Tristan - ds2's friend is a big maori boy with the same name - nothing camp or foppish there. Guess it's that old name assosiation again. Victor reminds me of Voctor Meldrew! Also a Gabriel at school everybody calls his 'Gabe' which I'm not so keen on.

poinsettydog · 16/12/2008 18:58

Victor Gabriel - yes yes

Tristan - no. foppish

Etienne - if you;re not french, no.

Glynn, Glen - no, wet

Spink · 16/12/2008 18:44

Tristan is my fav, you'd need to think about if you're ok with Tris for short, as lots of people are likely to shorten it.
(went out with one and he was a lovely man )

sorkycake · 16/12/2008 18:37

Etienne is a girls name, non?

Gabriel for a first name is lovely, don't like Tristan, makes me think of someone exceptionally camp who wears cravats.

Victor reminds me of that doofus from big brother, that or an old man.

muggglewump · 16/12/2008 18:20

Oh, I didn't read the whole post I just saw Tristan and had to comment

muggglewump · 16/12/2008 18:19

I love, love, love Tristan. It would have been DD's name had she been a boy.
There's still no boys name I like more so it gets my vote.

LiffeyCanSpellGeansaiNollaig · 16/12/2008 18:17

I love the name Victor. Not sure about Tristan, bit cissy. Victor is a strong, classic name. Due a revival in about 15 minutes though. Get in there first

SmilePlease · 16/12/2008 18:11

Pick Tristan...
I knew a Victor from school he wasn't a very pleasant boy and thought it was funny to throw rice grains at you in Cookery...

expatinscotland · 16/12/2008 17:51

i prefer the name of Tristan's father: Rivalin.

soooo romantic, when Tristan's mother told her maid, 'This dead man Rivalin of Loonois is killing me.'

LynetteScavo · 16/12/2008 17:46

Victor is a fine name.

Tristan is good too, but it's a very different type of name, so you'd need to look at your baby to see which one suited him most.

Don't go for Etienne if you're not French, and I'm mot keen on Glynn or Glen.

NotanOtter · 16/12/2008 17:46

re poncetasticness (is that a word err no!) fo for it

ds5 still has a full on name - i rise above the and time is a great leveller with names

NotanOtter · 16/12/2008 17:43

i am loving Tristan and Victor - victor has the edge i think = cute plus i once fancied a gorgeous victor in my teens

re Etienne i do love it but word of warning
gave ds5 a french name - born quattorze juillet - but regretted it as mispronounced so swapped it for his middle name

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 16/12/2008 17:40

Ok - if you like Elysium how about Ambrosius? Too much like custard???

Sesi · 16/12/2008 17:37

Thanks Northern - show a bit of spirit with a name such as Etienne and Quintas and you get crushed lol.

Actually I admit I am poncetastic - I had to be talked a way from Elysium down to the more sensible Etienne as my 1st choice.

I think that is exactly my hesitation with Tristan - it might turn into an American girls name a la Hayden & get too popular.

PortlySackSantaInAdvent · 16/12/2008 17:34

I like all of those and also StJohn (pron Sinjun) - might be a bit too biblical with Gabriel though LOL.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 16/12/2008 17:18

Don't take it to heart Sesi - I just asked for views on Quintus (not pregnant, no plans to be but I just like it) and it's been roundly trounced....actually - you don't like the sound of that do you

dinkymum · 16/12/2008 17:13

Tristan IMO

Jenbottleofeggnog · 16/12/2008 17:12

I like Victor or Glynn!
