Struggling to find a boys name ... what does anyone think of Hugh? For some reason, my mother feels it is 'very aristocratic', and we're not!

Thank you all for all the comments. Over the last few days, I've really grown to like the name ... so it's on the list

I have a Hugh, same name as my late brother, and it is a very good name . Oddly, my brother was Hughie and DS1 is Hughsie.

Hugo (pronounced without the H and the U sounds more like an O) is Spanish for Hugh. DS1 does have to repeat his name a lot but it doesn't seem to bother him.

prettybutterfly · 19/12/2008 20:53

My ds2 is a Hugh. His friends call him Hughie. No-one has ever called him a rude name!

He's cute. His name's cute. It's all good

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 19/12/2008 18:38

Hugh is nice. We've got a new family member who is Huey.

I have a Hugh as well and have posted on here before about the pros and cons if you do a search. I take on board the mispronunciations, we have had the Q thing but still love the name. Mine is 2 and a half and I have not met another one but do know a few Hugos.

He gets called Hughie most of the time but also Hubert, Hubes, Hugs, Houston when we are being silly.

Expecting another bubs over Christmas so now just need a nice name to accompany Hughie.

tulip27 · 19/12/2008 18:22

I have a 4 yr old Hugo and he is a mustard cord, wax jacket wearing child but so is his father so we had no hope but I think its such a cool name. He is called Hughie most of the time though.

wideratthehips · 19/12/2008 18:21

its nice and strong..if our dc3 is a boy we are seriously considering it...he will need something strong so hes not lost amongst his big brothers

Homebird8 · 19/12/2008 18:11

My DS1 is Gregory Huw. We liked the Welsh spelling and he has Welsh blood.

It does rhyme with a lot though.

He gets called Gregoroo quite a lot as he's very bouncy!

Also Gregory Huwdini as he's an escape artist.

Then there are the obvious ones loo, poo etc.

I still love the name and wouldn't change it for the world!

sonniboo · 19/12/2008 18:05

I like Hugh - its a simple, classic, masculine sounding name that won't need to be abbreviated!

andlipsticktoo · 19/12/2008 17:19

My nephew is called Huw and he totally suits it. Gorgeous.

I must admit there have been several wonderful pronounciations of his name including 'Q', 'shoe' and 'who'. all of which he has found quite funny.

I must admit, he does occasionally wear Boden, but he goes to a regular state school!

Swedes · 19/12/2008 17:01

I love the name Hugh. My sister's other half is a Hugh and he is a lovely Cambridge educated, doctor who is brilliant with children, old people, dogs, directions, everything. And he is very handsome.

WorzselMincepieYummage · 19/12/2008 17:01

Hugh makes me think of Welsh sheep farmers for some reason ..

tiredemma · 19/12/2008 17:00

whwnever I think Hugh, I think of Hugh Grant with tht mugshot pic

Tortington · 19/12/2008 16:59

hugh - grant - blowjob - hooker

ohreindeerwhatamessysleigh · 19/12/2008 16:57

I love it, for other people. Dh was very keen to use it for ds2, but I rejected it because it is my feckless brother's middle name.

arcticlemming · 19/12/2008 16:55

Reminds me of "calling for Hugh", which is navel slang for throwing up. Sorry.

thatsnotmymonster · 19/12/2008 16:51

Don't like Hugh but almost cose Hugo for dc3 but she's a she so we didn't

WorzselMincepieYummage · 19/12/2008 16:49

My Labrador's called Hugo but we wish we'd not used to for our Dog now we're expecting a Boy and have realised quite how cool a name it is

We should have called the Dog Max or something.

PopcornSeller · 19/12/2008 12:41

Oooh, if you're in Wales and go for Huw, he could become Doctor Huw...

Smilewearingthin · 18/12/2008 19:59

The pronunciation seems to be the issue in a lot of ways. And our surname does begin with a J and so we'd have the 'huge' thing going. Good point about it being hard to pronounce for children, too. Hmm ... looks like it's back to the drawing board. Or the baby name books!

NotBigJustBolshy · 18/12/2008 19:12

As long as your surname isn't Cumber...

2pt4WiseMen · 18/12/2008 19:10

Is your surname Janus?

SAEJ · 18/12/2008 19:03

I like it - wanted it for our DS but as my DH pointed out 'Hugh Johnson' sounded far too like Huge Johnson and therefore we might be setting him up for a life of expectation!!!

In short I think it depends a bit on your surname.
