Ptolemy???

Found out today we are having a boy

DH has suggested calling him Ptolemy... at first I thought he was joking but now the name's really growing on me and we're seriously considering using it. Trouble is, we're not mega posh & the kid will be going to a state school.

So what do you think? Acceptable in this age of weird names, or are we being mean to the poor child?

Be ptold- this name is not to ptolerated.

storkycake · 11/12/2008 18:29

well I never... pania. learn something new everyday.

Sophocles is a bloody fantastic name!!!!

pania · 11/12/2008 18:27

No no no Storky! He isn't!

It turns out I was wrong about his baby's name though, he's actually called Sophocles.

nkf · 11/12/2008 18:24

Surely there are names which don't fall into eitehr camp.

combustiblelemon · 11/12/2008 18:23

We can't all use Jayden or Chardonnay nfk.

nkf · 11/12/2008 18:17

It's hilarious. 99% of the population won't be able to pronounce it. And even when they're told how to pronounce it, most of them won't believe it. I remember a tortoise called Ptolemy. Can't believe anyone would seriously consider it. But it's an excellent nearly end of the week joke.

Anglepoise · 11/12/2008 18:14

Actually I suspect it will be constantly embarrassing to people who don't know how to pronounce it.

ggirlsbells · 11/12/2008 18:12

too poncy
smacks of parents trying to be posh

littletownofmeglethem · 11/12/2008 18:12

I know a Ptolomey, he's pretty cool. But your DS will get annoyed spelling it.

thumbElf · 11/12/2008 18:12

ah no, he's not really serious is he? I spose if you call him Tolly for short it isn't that bad but... dunno..

storkycake · 11/12/2008 18:11

I thought Germaine was gay!!!!!

ByThePowerOfBaileys · 11/12/2008 18:10

I love it
I would HATE people to spell it wrong though and I think that some may

VivaLaPotPourri · 11/12/2008 18:08

GOsh, I thought you pronounced it per-tolomy. I have to say it's growing on me too!

catweazle · 11/12/2008 18:06

I love it. We seriously considered it this time but had DD2.

There is one at DD's nursery but they spell it Tolemy. Don't know whether that was deliberate to make it easier for him, or whether they are just uneducated

donnie · 11/12/2008 18:06

my friend's son is called Ptolemy and they call him Tolly for short. His sisters are called Medea and Phaedra!!

Horton · 11/12/2008 18:06

Absolutely love it.

pania · 11/12/2008 18:05

I really like the sound of it, and the original was a pretty impressive man I must admit.

Didn't the bespectacled one from Flight of the Conchords just call his baby that too?

Spelling would be a bit of a problem pthough.

storkycake · 11/12/2008 17:54

scummymummy...that's quite witty

Anglepoise · 11/12/2008 17:54

Quite like how it sounds, love the perversity of the P, think it would be just the wrong side of too silly in RL.

TrinityRhino · 11/12/2008 17:53

well i think it is horrendously pretentious and doesn't sound nice and looks horrid written down....you did ask

ScummyMummy · 11/12/2008 17:49

Inptolerable.

dinny · 11/12/2008 17:47
