I recently saw the name 'Naterlee' which I assume was for 'Natalie'.

Of course, anyone is perfectly entitled to call a child whatever they wish

When a name is clearly mis-spelt, should the registrar not question it?

I do feel sorry for a child lumbered with such an obviously mis-spelt name.

I had to spell my daughter's name to the registrar - she asked how Elizabeth (one of dd's middle names) was going to spelt, Z or S, and was given a draft cert to look at before the real birth certificate was printed. Maybe some people can't spell very well so they can't 'see' if a word or name looks wrong - either that or they're all trying to be different! I'm not talking about names taken from other cultures here but what are seen as deliberate mis-spellings. It must grate on some registrars. Not sure I'd like having to choose from an approved list of names though.

IME as a teacher of 14 years, names are usually spelt wrongly on purpose to make them different.

Ema
Kalea
Rebekka or Rebeka
Rozie
Kymberly amongst many many others.

Parents seem very fond of swopping c with s, and i with y

potatofactory · 12/12/2008 15:55

I once taught a kid called Roksam. Was this meant to be Roxanne? I thought so...

RachieB · 12/12/2008 15:50

omg pmsl at some of thse names!!

poor poor kids

gagamama · 12/12/2008 11:00

My mum is a teacher in Essex and teaches a little girl called 'Taylah'. It just seems like it's been spelt out phonetically in an Essex accent and it makes me cringe.

mumjoanne · 12/12/2008 10:59

A little boy at my DS's nursery is called Adamant - lovely little boy

randomxmas · 12/12/2008 10:49

Don't think it matters really - find the irish spelt names had to pronouce & wouldn't know if these were spelt right.

MirandaG · 12/12/2008 10:42

Fishie, that's interesting because the registrar was very keen for me to include the second 'a' in Rachel for my daughter's second name. I didn't want to, but when I got home dh said he did. TOO LATE! Serves him right for never doing these things with me You'd think there would be more consistency among registrars. Am totally in favour of list of standardised names, as in some countries. Some poor kids get burdened with some real clangers and they're probably not the ones with the best start in life anyway...

Simplysally · 12/12/2008 10:13

One of my friends was going to be Philip but his Mum didn't want him to end up with the initials PIS .

fishie · 11/12/2008 22:49

my dad registered my sister as rachAel by mistake, she does not want the second a and it is difficult to shake off.

StealthPolarBear · 11/12/2008 22:47

Not really relevant to this thread but I used to know a Brian whose mum spelt his name wrong...Brain...well either that or that really was his name

frazzledoldbag34 · 11/12/2008 22:42

Years ago there was a girl on the checkouts in the supermarket with a badge saying 'Shuvawn'. Poor girl.
I do also know of a Siobhan but she is pronounced 'Sigh-oh- ban'. Why would you?

Years ago a mate of mine was supply-teaching, and met a little girl who said her name was Wyevonny. The little girl was too young to be able to spell it so at the end of the day my mate asked the girl's mother about the name. Which was, of course, spelt Y V O N N E.

BikeRunSki · 11/12/2008 22:21

Our registrar's notes from the hospital said that DS was a boy. She did question "Samuel Peter" for a girl! We assured her that he was a boy.... I like to think I am liberal, but not that liberal!

In the early 70s the registrar sugguested to my friend's father that he really didn't want to give her the initials IRA.

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 11/12/2008 22:10

I know a Sian. This is ok, apart from it's pronounced See-Ann.

moondog · 11/12/2008 22:00

I know of a Jorja (unfortunately).

Thought it was an Eastern European kids for ages (maybe pronounced 'Yoooorya') then realised,no, it was just a chav cell in our village.

MannyMoeAndJack · 11/12/2008 21:57

I can remember a case years ago of a couple being gently informed by the registrar that the first and second names that they had chosen for their ds were actually one and the same.....

Jimmy James

nooka · 11/12/2008 20:27

But InNeedofSleep, only Daryn is a "made up" version of a real name (should be Darin, Daren or Darren). The other names are all quite conventionally spelt. Clare is Medieval English, as opposed to Claire, which is the French form (or Clair which is actually masculine). Jacqui is just another shortening of Jacqueline, in the same way as Jackie is (and actually more "proper"), likewise Katy and Katie are both traditional diminutives of Kate, which is in turn a shortening of Katherine.

myredcardigan · 11/12/2008 19:58

Smugaboo, I've never seen Siobhan spelt Shavon even in this country. Looks too much like Sharon for most people!

JODIEhadtoomanymincepies · 11/12/2008 19:47

Don't know any mis-spelt names, but just had to add that I know a Jesus.. His parents are Spanish and is pronounced heyzoos, but it's still spelt the 'religious' way! DH always laughs when he looks at my phone as he can't get his head round the fact I've got a direct line to Jesus!!!

smugaboo · 11/12/2008 19:44

My girls have gaelic names (as do I) and I hate when they are given anglisized spelling. i.e. Siobhan = Shavon etc. Perhaps some people will argue that it will actually make it easier to spell (outside of Ireland) but I just think "why don't you just choose a different name?". To me, the spelling is integral to the name.

And hey, I grew up in country with a difficult (but valid!) spelling and it seriously wasn't a problem. Made me stand out a bit actually!

InNeedOfSleep · 11/12/2008 19:20

Ok didn't read the whole thread, Keef and Prayshus is possibly taking it just a step too far...

MadameCastafiore · 11/12/2008 19:12

There is a Befan and DDs school - now that is clearly wrong!

Nancy66 · 11/12/2008 19:12

I think i may have previously mentioned this. But I know of a Sham-payne

Lotster · 11/12/2008 19:11
