What do you all think of Elouise for a girl?

Northenlurker - but surely that can be with any name?

Another vote for saying 'Elouise' just looks wrong here I'm afraid.

I also feel it fails the supermarket test - sounds dreaful when howled down an aisle. Believe me - I've spent time at the school gate with the harassed mother of a rumbustious Eloise and when you've heard it yelled 'Eeeeeeeeeellllllllloooooooooooooooooeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze!' day in, day out for years on end - you've heard it enough!

Anna8888 · 09/12/2008 17:03

Héloïse is French

Anna8888 · 09/12/2008 17:02

Héloïse

pregapuss · 09/12/2008 17:02

So I am not being a mad woman when I spell it Elouise then? Lol

IMO Eloise is french and Elouise is like the English version. Although I knew a little girl called Elouise a few years ago and her mum was indian! Lol.

Pamelat was linking you to a website called Thinkbabynames

this is what is said...

The girl's name Elouise \e-loui-se\ is a variant of Eloisa (Old German), and the meaning of Elouise is "famous warrior".

The baby name Elouise sounds like Elouisa and Eloise. Other similar baby names are Aloise, Elise, Elodie and Louise.

Elouise is a popular female first name and a very rare surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census). Displayed below is the baby name popularity trend for the girl's name Elouise. Compare Elouise with related baby names.

pregapuss · 09/12/2008 14:54

Your link is not working here I am afraid so not sure what it was you were showing us.

Pamelat - Yes it is in a lot of baby name books as Elouise.

I didn't just "make it up". It is just one of 2 ways of spelling it.

oooh look

pamelat · 09/12/2008 14:20

Love it, we considered it.

Personally I thought it was spelt Elouise (must have been in a baby name book that way) but if the traditional spelling is Eloise then keep it that way.

cheeseandsproutssarnie · 09/12/2008 14:17

i love a good name thread.
i love the name eloise.but i have to say i agree with majority the elouise makes me say eee-louise.and dare i say sounds like someone cant spell.

IllegallyBrunette · 09/12/2008 14:15

Alot of people spelt Chloe, 'Cloe' when she she was born and we had cards for her, but no one spelt Eloise wrongly, thats all I was saying.

At the end of the day, you are spelling the name wrongly, spelling it with a U, but thats your choice and if you are happy with it then don't ask for opinions about it on here, because you won't always get the answer you want.

morningpaper · 09/12/2008 14:14

Lovely name but your children will tell everyone that you went to the Registry Office and didn't know how to spell it correctly (even if this is untrue - I have heard it a lot from people with 'unusual' names )

Don't go down in family myth as an illiterate peasant!

Turniphead1 · 09/12/2008 14:11

I second what ketal says. By asking you have invited comment on the spelling. It is integral.

I have children with much trickier names than Eliose and they have no problem at all with friends and family who were unfamiliar with it to start off with. I would far rather have used the correct name rather than some odd bastardised version. This thread should show you that more people than not will know how to spell Eloise correctly.

If Louise is a family name - use it then, rather than tacking on an extra "e" to make a strange new name.

Elouise looks like E Louise to me
like J Edgar Hoover type thing

Eloise is very nice but being used a lot atm I think, there seem to be a lot of them about

ketal · 09/12/2008 13:56

Not having a go but...

You said...

"I wanted an opinion of the name not a big arguement about the way it is spelt!"

You asked for opnions on the name. Of the 65 threads 33 say that Eloise (Spelt without the u) is a lovely name, but with the u it is not as nice.

Two people said they liked it with the u.

The other comments varied from mentioning the book, the song and various other comments about the subject.

Given that you asked for people's opinions - that is what you've got - Eloise is lovely, Elouise is not. Fair enough if you don't agree with what the other 33 posters have written, that's your perogative - your child to name as you please, but if you ask for opinions - then you have to accept them whether you like them or not.

There's no argument here, honest, just people giving their opinions, and for once mostly in agreement with each other. Unfortunately, just not in agreement with you! But at the end of the day, whether you agree with the majority, or go your own way - it is your child and good luck to you. I hope you have a happy birth and baby, and whichever spelling you choose, the name in essence is lovely!

seeker · 09/12/2008 13:54

And do remember that opinions on here are pretty representative of people you'll meet in real life. If the vast majority of people here thing that spelling it your way is going to be a pain in the neck for your dd for years, then they are probably right and I think you'd be unwise not to to at least consider what's being said.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 13:48

If you like it, fine, but you did ask for opinions.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 13:48

"I agree with stupid things like Kloe and Jorja, but that is changing the first letter and I don't personally see that as the same thing at all"

It's no different at all. It's changing the traditional spelling of a name to suit yourself, pure and simple.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2008 13:43

Elouise makes me want to pronounce it Eee-loiuse for some reason

CoteDAzur · 09/12/2008 13:41

'It is a bit like saying "Most people spell book with a double o, but I'm going to spell it bouk because I like it better"!'

Worse. It's like saying 'Everyone spells book with a double o, but I'm going to spell it bouk because people around me don't know how to spell it'

CoteDAzur · 09/12/2008 13:39

"when I asked how they thought you would spell it they said Elouise"

How do you pronounce Eloise, then?

Because, if you pronounce it correctly ("Elo-weese") I can't believe anyone would want to spell it Elouise.

pregapuss · 09/12/2008 12:24

Yes it was a combination of Eloise and Louise on purpose. Louise is a family name sort of thing and we have one in each generation so wanted Louise somewhere and I can't have Louise as a middle name and Eloise as the first!

To be honest, I am starting to regret starting this thread. I wanted an opinion of the name not a big arguement about the way it is spelt!

And I have never met anybody who can't spell chloe

OP posts:
IllegallyBrunette · 09/12/2008 10:28

I have never met anyone who didn't know how to spell Eloise. Infact more people spell dd2's first name wrong (chloe), than her middle name.

BouncingTinsel · 09/12/2008 10:21

My niece (2yo) is called Eloise. I like it. No-one seems to have any trouble pronouncing it. It does occasionally get shortened to Ellie.

Elouise just looks odd, though it is a variant, I don't think it is a widely used one. I think people may get a bit confused by it. And I speak as someone who has a fairly ordinary name that is always mis-spelt!
